You could export that little section of the registry to text files; 1.reg and 3.reg, save those to the desktop, and then right click on them and Merge. Navigate to the reg folder in your post, set the value to 1, and with the folder highlighted, choose File>Export, and export to the desktop. Repeat for 3. Don’t know if you have to reboot after, but this will change the values without having to travel deep down into the Registry!!!

Blindly updating Windows without checking up on potential problems may be as bad as not updating at all. Probably the BEST advice you could give your class would be to Subsribe to Woody’s Windows Watch!!!!!! and have them get the goods on updates (and lots of other stuff)

Did you install the IE Update #832894 (On SP1)? There have been problems with it messing with History and stored passwords. It has been pulled from the V4 Update site.

Have you checked the settings in Popup Manager to add popups to your block list? Or updated Popup Manager to the latest? My guess is that rather than some problem with XP, the nature of popups are that they are getting “better” at getting through. I am using some (ahem) new software that does a good job blocking popups, so I’m not using Popup Manager anymore and I don’t have it here to play with the settings. Popups are quite annoying, though. I sympathize. Check your settings and see if you can’t get more of the ######s.

I find significant speed improvements using the optimization to the registry provided by TCP Optimizer (the one I use, there are others) You can read about/download the “tweaks” at http://WWW.Speedguide.net I use cable modem but you should get speed improvement with DSL, too. Download and install TCP Optimizer on each of your computers, run it and click on the “Optimized Settings” bullet near the bottom of the dialog box. Reboot and that’s all there is to it.

(ps this is the first thing I do after a new format/install, even before Windows Update!)

System Restore will take up some space, too, maybe 200mb. Also when you added up your folder sizes, did you include hidden folders? Make sure “show hidden folders” is checked in My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View.

You could also check the WIndows Audio Service in Administrative Tools>Services. I know that when I was playing with a beta of Windows Server 2003, Windows Audio was shut off by default and I had no sound even though I checked everything (else), as you have. Maybe something shut the service down (???)

I think what you need to do is “archive” your old items. You don’t lose anything, but old stuff is moved out of your current folders into special archive folders. Sorry I’m not totally up on this but you can look it up in help. There is an “auto-archive” feature. You can set auto-archive settings in Tools>Options>Other>Auto-Archive, and then use File>Archive.
