Yes, quite a bit! The DOS command dir c: /s /b | sort /+256 /r > LongName.txt actually gives an error on a very long pathname, but does produce a file. I am just going to try the CutLongNames utility.

It’s really quite annoying that programs can create paths longer than 256 bytes which some Windows utilities cannot handle. Grrrrrh.

Addendum to the above – no, Xplorer2 Lite has the same problem with long pathnames as does Windows Explorer, with Rename and Delete dropping out of the menu…

I am just trying to get the auditory vision of a LPO screaming viola solo as opposed to the electric guitar
”Auditory vision” as opposed to “visual sound”, perhaps?! And I’d be delighted if you could point me at a piece of music containing a viola solo (they are usually very undemonstrative instruments, and few in number compared with violins).

Very occasionally they do BaRock music…

Could you not ring up the manager of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and get them to play it for J2? I’m sure they’d even record it for you for not much more…

Rather than the standard COPY/XCOPY/folder drag and drop mechanisms which have the “useful feature” you describe, you probably want to be looking at Microsoft’s ROBOCOPY (XP010 version), or XXCOPY, or Karen’s Replicator. The first two are of most use if you are comfortable with the Command Prompt window (although there is a ROBOCOPY GUI which I don’t use), because you can set up a Scheduled Task to do this for you automatically or set up a desktop shortcut to click on when you are ready to do the copy.

To get ROBOCOPY you have to download the whole of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools.

If you want assistance with any of the myriad switches that ROBOCOPY and XXCOPY use, please ask again, although you can ignore 95% of them when simply mirroring a folder tree on another drive.

I don’t have any .TTC files in my Fonts directory, but here is a little information about them.

although the Adobe Reader application does not launch as such
I disagree – on every new update of Adobe Reader it puts an entry into the Registry’s Run keys to launch Reader_SL.exe, and I always remove it. Just like JAVA adds a Run entry for Java_Scheduler (or something similar). In neither case do you get told about it!

    • in reply to: Spyware Doctor Smart Updates. #1081280

I would look to see if there is anything at the relevant time in the Application Event Log (or, less likely, the System Event Log), and check whether Spyware Doctor itself produces a log. Then it’s a hunt for a log produced by NAV2007 (if it does produce one – I don’t have it installed).

Does Spyware Doctor have a forum or other means of technical support?

After doing what you suggest, he may have to go into Task Scheduler, select that task, then Properties, then insert an Administrator account and password under which to run the job. In my experience, Task Scheduler tends to be pretty touchy about running these system tasks…

    • in reply to: Toshiba Laptop Turns Off Suddenly #1081246

Conicidentally I also have a laptop which will suddenly power off for no obvious reason (high temperatures are not related, according to SpeedFan) and the battery is nearly dead (says it will last 8 minutes when fully charged). As expected, nothing in any Event Log.

I found an obscure and unintelligible power option in the BIOS which I’ve turned off, and I’ve now taken the battery out, and it has worked fine on mains power for 3½ hours. Whether that has ‘fixed’ the problem, I don’t know, but a new battery is over £60… (Yet another reason why I hate laptops!)
