Are you saying that you need an explanation of setting up a task in Task Scheduler to run the SHUTDOWN.EXE program?

Have you already solved the problem of cleanly shutting down your SQL Server program from the command line?

    • in reply to: SyncToy 2.0 beta #1081113

Yes, that’s (half of) what i meant, too!

I note that SyncToy 2.0 has a prerequisite of SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (presumably what used to be MSDE?), and that if you want to upgrade from SyncToy 1.4 you should synchronise all your folder pairs before installing 2.0…

I think I mentioned it last time SyncToy was discussed on the Lounge, and I may well have commented back to the team, but the Lounge response was that you got what you got given!

Off upstairs now to try it, first having used SyncToy 1.4 upstairs to copy upstairs the SyncToy 2.0 that was downloaded downstairs. (Easy for me to remember – Downloads happen Downstairs…!)

I think they’ve had to rework the usual [one dollar translates to one Pound Sterling] transfer rate for the euro market. Yes, of course it costs more to do business outside the US!

Can you not install one of a whole raft of possible free PDF ‘printers’, among which CutePDF Writer, PDF995, PrimoPDF?

If you haven’t met this before, you need to install the software and will then find a new ‘printer’ among your list of Printers and Faxes. You print from within the program, select the PDF printer, then specify the path and filename of the PDF you wish to create. Bob’s your uncle!

    • in reply to: SyncToy 2.0 beta #1081071

Thanks, Joe – I use it to synchronise important folders between two PCs as ‘backup’!

I didn’t spot any reference to localisation of dates and times, though, so looks like the rest of the world has to continue to accept the US date/time format. A small point among such facility, fortunately…

I’m not sure how this corresponds, but have a look at KompoZer, which is a bug-fix version of Nvu. And, yes, it’s free !

The simple answer would be Yes – provided that your AV is kept updated. Every AV manufacturer is very well aware of the danger posed by this worm…

    • in reply to: How to find what IP’s a DHCP has given out #1080935

With regard to your original questions, would Arp Viewer do anything to assist? It simply relates MAC addresses to IP addresses, and the results are considerably better than their webpage might indicate. However, their file identifying the manufacturers of NICs stopped 5½ years ago (which is the date of the software).

That would explain the problem precisely!

Could the command-line program IPCONFIG assist here?

Running it in a Command Prompt window on the PC using IPCONFIG /ALL gives all sorts of IP info.

IPCONFIG /RELEASE followed by IPCONFIG /RENEW does what you might guess it does!

This Acrobat Reader 8.1.1 update apparently deals with this PDF exploit

Just for my own peace of mind, could I ask you to confirm that all the phone sockets on that line into which there are telephones or other such equipment plugged have ADSL filters into which the plug is inserted? (If there’s only the one phone socket, my question is irrelevant!)

    • in reply to: CoookieWall – Auto Start #1080695

This probably doesn’t happen but is it actually running without having deposited an icon in the System Information Area? (Hunt through the list of processes in Task Manager -> Processes).

The author seems quite responsive to questions (if I’ve identified the right program…)

    • in reply to: cannot rename (folder) already exists #1080693

Quite a lot of folders get set as Hidden and System, such as

      • System Volume Information
      • RECYCLER
      • backup folders created by Dantz Retrospect Express[/list]Now you’ve turned on Show Hidden Files, just have a look at the root of your C: drive for a whole lot of folders and files with a fascinating mixture of attributes, including Read-only…
