      Windows 95 ships with a little-known utility that lets you run renegade DOS and Windows 3.1 programs in Windows 95. The key to making these programs work with Windows 95 is using the settings stored in the [Compatibility] section of the Win.ini file. If you open C:WindowsWin.ini, you’ll see entries like these:

      [Compatibility]

      ACAD=0x8000

      AMIPRO=0x04000010

      Each entry tells Windows 95 how to force the program to work–for example, “Lie about Windows version number,” or “Give application more stack space.” Fortunately, you don’t need to memorize these settings. Simply click on File, Run, type in MKCOMPAT, click on File, Choose Program, and check off the appropriate restrictions.

      I’m not sure if this would work with win95 based applications but it doesn’t hurt to try. Anyway it can be undone anytime.

      April 11, 2001 at 4:05 am in reply to: Screensaver password #522378

      I’m not using Windows ME and my idea pertains to Win98 but may give you an alternative. Will you be able to boot to a DOS diskette? I know somehow DOS was disable in ME but if you can then you just have to locate the filename of the screen saver and delete it. Usually the filename convention would follow “filename.scr” . Now screen saver no password.

      If you go to Safe mode does the screensaver kicks in right away? If not then you can change or disable the screensaver password or delete it before it loads. If you succeed in deleting it and you want the screen saver back then just copy it from your installation cd or from any win me machine and place it on the windowssystem folder.

      Try right-clicking the TASKBAR and rearrange your windows either cascade, horizontally or vertically. From there you could drag and then resize the windows.

      March 10, 2001 at 11:58 pm in reply to: Right clicking icons slow #518307

      I did have a similar problem but using win98. Somebody told me to remove some of the entries created when you right-click (the desktop) NEW > …filetype (the list here adds up as you open applications installed in your computer that register a particular file type). To eliminate some entries in here, if you have TWEAK then this will help clean up most of the entries. For some reason my right-clicking works normally. You may try this trick.
