Can I configure the FrontPage Personal Web Server to select the default file name? Can I figure it to leave file names alone when downloading? Can I substitute a different Web server? (I seem to remember that there is a better one available, even as a Windows 98 component…)

I had the PWS running (installed when I reinstalled FrontPage) but then I realized that it might be causing my other problem — long delays before saving pages in FrontPage Editor. I found the local Web page accessible through front page to configure the PWS and configured it not to start when the computer boots. Now it no longer appears in the system tray and I couldn’t find it in a cursory search in FrontPage either.

I’ll try unchecking DMA, though it’s unfortunate to have to revert to a slower mode especially for an operation as sensitive to disk performance as CD burning..

A peculiarity I’ve noticed is that when I’m running the CD-ROM burning software Windows Explorer displays multiple copies of the CD-RW drive. Apparently, the CD-RW software somehow bungles up Windows Explorer. The multiple copies appeared when I used Adaptec Esay CD Creator software, v. 4, but continued after I uninstalled that software and began running Nero software. I hope that I don’t have to wipe and reinstall Windows to overcome this problem.

Sorry, ILeif’s answer explains what FrontPage does and how browsers respond to it, but I still don’t want FrontPage to do that!. I am downloading a site so I can browse it offline, edit a few of the files and then return them to the server. FrontPage won’t leave the files alone when I download them. Instead, it renames the index. htm(l) files to Default.htm and changes links to them accordingly everywhere in the site. Now, there are some links including those outside the site which are to the specific file index.htm(l). So, I could be sure to make the site work internally if I upload EVERYTHING instead of the few files I’ve edited. But still, links outside the site may not work. The file renaming also takes a lot of time. I just want FrontPage to leave the files the !$@#%@#$% alone when it downloads the site. Is there a way around this intrusive behavior of FrontPage?
