Something I’ve just discovered after all these years: click once on your volume icon (assuming you have it in your NA) and scroll your mouse wheel.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t show you the volume percentage, which clicking on the pointer and moving the mouse does.

This approach may not be for everyone, especially if workspace is at a premium, but it’s worked very successfully for me.

After having gone through a number of inkjet printers over the past twenty years with varying results, and having spent a lot of money on ink, several years ago I bought three inexpensive printers: a Brother HL2240D B/W laser printer, a Konica Minolta magicolor 1600W color laser printer, and a Canon PIXMA iP4920 inkjet printer.

I use the Brother for most of my day-to-day printing, the Konica Minolta when I need to print a color document, and the Canon exclusively for printing photos. The cost of each printer was considerably less than $100, though that may no longer be true.

I have yet to replace a toner cartridge in either of the laser printers, and only a couple of the ink cartridges in the Canon.

Like satrow and genej313, I also use Pale Moon as my primary browser, with Firefox as backup. I really dislike FF’s new look, but that’s easily corrected with the use of the Classic Theme Restorer extension and, on my system, the two browsers look very much alike (screenshot). On a different note, I think the Win9x UI was the best that MS ever produced and, even though I’m now running Win7 Pro SP1, the Classic Shell allows me to achieve that look.

I DO want a less cluttered view, but that isn’t the way to get it.

      David …

Apparently, you didn’t read my OP carefully enough. I have access to the local computer in Explorer; what I’d like is to get rid of the link to the local computer in Explorer’s Network.

      Hi Paul,

I’m pretty sure I was able to do it when my computers were running XP, but I don’t seem to be able to do it in Win7.

    • Do you have automatic updating turned on?

    • There IS, in fact, a site called Microsoft Updates but, if you have automatic updating turned on, it opens the Windows Update screen accessed from Control Panel. If not, it gives instructions on how to turn on automatic updating.

    • To the Windows Update screen accessed from Control Panel.

    • …if you try to go to a site called Windows Update, you’ll get taken to Microsoft Update, because that’s what it is now.

Not on my computer … I don’t deny that there’s something called Microsoft Update, but I can type either windowsupdate.com or microsoftupdate.com in my browser’s address window, and it opens the same Windows Update screen that opens when I click “Windows Update” in Control Panel.

In fact, I seem to be unable to get to any site called Microsoft Update. The closest I can get is to a button on the Microsoft Download Center site labeled “Microsoft Update”. But, when I click it, it opens the previously mentioned Windows Update screen.

    • And it’s not Windows Update any more. It’s Microsoft Update.

Maybe it’s because I’m running Win7, but my Control Panel shows “Windows Update”.

    • in reply to: Firefox version 29.0: User interface change #1453136

Because I use 64-bit Win7 Pro, I run Pale Moon as my primary browser and Firefox as my secondary browser; they can be open at the same time, and run side by side very nicely. They use identical (but separate) profiles, and I have always used the original Toolbar Buttons extension, which allows the use of a variety of buttons (and also works with Thunderbird), to customize their toolbars. Were it not for the fact that their titlebars are different, I’d sometimes be hard pressed to know which browser I was using.

When FF 29.0 was introduced, I was very unhappy with the changes in the UI. The new version may be more secure, and MAY be slightly faster, but the changes in appearance which, to me, appeared to be simply for the sake of change, really turned me off.

Fortunately, using the Classic Theme Restorer extension in FF, I once again have it looking almost the same as PM.

    • in reply to: First impressions with Acronis True Image 2014 Premium #1421784

Unfortunately this is only for new users.

Not true, Ted. I’m a “present user”, having used True Image and Disk Director for years, and my experience has been that upgrades from Acronis usually cost more than buying the new version from User Groups, e.g. $30 from Acronis vs $25 from UGR. But, I agree … if Rui was able to get the family pack for about $20, he really got a bargain.

    • in reply to: First impressions with Acronis True Image 2014 Premium #1421676

I received the same offer from Acronis, but none of the added “features” in TI 2014 were of any interest to me, so I’m continuing to make my manual backups with TI 2013 (no PlusPack … don’t need those features, either).

For those who might be interested, an outfit called User Group Relations sells both True Image and Disk Director for half the Acronis price through a marketing arrangement with Acronis. I’ve used their services for several years, and you do NOT have to belong to a user group to buy from them.
