What device is unavailable and exactly how are you attempting to record the cassettes? What software are you using? Also, what is the OS?

What level of security do you have on the router? If WPA2, check to make sure the laptops will support that level. If you are using WPA2 on the router your might try using WPA instead and see if that will work.

First thing to try would be to shut down the computer and then unplug your modem and router. After about 30 seconds power up (in this order) the modem and let it sync, next the router, let it sync, and finally the computer.

Second, change the channel on the router. Most routers use 6 as the default, try 1 or 11.

Third, reset the router using the reset button. This should put the router back to an out of the box condition and will require setting everything up again.

Last, check and see if there are any firmware updates for your router.

You can do basic burning with the 7 software.

For anything more you will need a third party program. CDBurnerXP is a full featured free burning program that works well with Win7.

Try this from the How-To Geek. Scroll down to Disable Beep in Sounds Panel. The article states it is for XP, but it should be the same in Vista and Win 7.

As Tim states, the problem is your ISP. If you have the older 1.1 USB ports you might see some difference with ethernet. If you have 2.0 USB ports there probably won’t be much difference.

    • in reply to: Will I see a speed increase with a new router? #1258388

A new router will most likely not increase your WAN speed. That speed is determined by numerous things, mainly your ISP. If you are getting a “3mbps connection” speed, it would probably remain about the same. On the other hand, if you have a home network a new N series router could possibly double your file transfers between computers.

A dual band router will not be any faster than the equipment that is connecting to it. Unless your equipment supports the 5 GHz band a dual will be no faster than a single band.

Slightly faster is to hold down Ctrl and left click the folders you wish to delete. Once they are highlighted, right click and then delete.

Are you pressing “Enter” when a word is almost at the right margin? If so, Works thinks you are starting a new sentence. If this is the case, don’t press Enter and let Works automatically start the next line.

Right click on the Desktop, select Personalize. In the left pane click “Change desktop icons”. Under Desktop Icons place a check beside “Network” > Apply > OK. Should get you the icon without the “arrow”.

Wired or wireless, makes no difference.

Are your folder permissions set to share on the desktop? What firewall are you using on the desktop? It may be blocking the network.

    • in reply to: Does an XP reinstall require all service packs? #1257255

I’ve used an OEM copy of XP on two installs on Gateway machines with no problems. In my situation the product key was never asked for. Both machines passed the Microsoft Genuine Validation.

I determined what drivers I needed and had them downloaded prior to the install. I wiped the drive with Darik’s Boot and Nuke and then did the install. Loaded the drivers, did the Windows Updates and haven’t had any problems. Being your OEM disc has SP2 the updates will only download what you need.

If you have to turn off Zone Alarm the most likely problem is the Firewall > Zones settings. You must have your NIC in theTrusted zone. The screenshot is of the free version. Don’t know about the settings in the paid version.

    • in reply to: What is a Recovery partition? #1255966

One other option is simply reformat the partition as NTFS and then it will show as a “New Volume” in Computer. That’s what I did and use it for storing seldom used documents and files.

Unless you have to have the partition merged this is a quick simple solution.

Have you set up a network? Have you enabled file and printer sharing? What is the operating system on each machine? Here is a site that may help.
