I think you’re in the ballpark, Andrew. That seems to be generally the area of the problem – just not specifically. The double-quotes, etc. are all in place as they should be.
      Thanks,
      Keith

Not very many. And everything in the shortcuts seems to be fine. Apparently, it’s actually NOT the shortcuts that are the problem. I get the same error message if I double-click an Excel file in the explorer. Unless I open a file from WITHIN Excel, I get nowhere.

The file associations seems to be ok. I dunno…

Just tried it. Got the same message (Cannot find the file C:…. ). This seems to be more than a shortcut problem. The system is not recognizing anything in the format “excel.exe / filename”.

      Thanks anyway, Andrew.

    • in reply to: Netscape 4.79 Upgrade (Netscape 4.79) #562373

Thanks, Unk – no cigar. It was worth a shot. I got an error message telling me that the prefs.js file was a Mozilla file with an illegal #, then NS just created its own new prefs file again. My guess is that it’s not the prefs file since a clean new one should have let me at least connect. I’ve restored an old registry, so it’s apparently not there. What’s that leave? Winsock? – TCP/IP? Aliens?

I tried renaming the old prefs.js file. Netscape happily created a new one, but the problem remained. I’ve tried restoring a previous registry, also. The problem’s not there either. Guess I’m out of ideas for now. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions, MerC –
Restoring a previous registry won’t work. He’s on a different computer.

I DO have Xteq on my own system. I checked out the plug-in and it looks like it should do the trick. Since it’s after quitting time, I’ll try it first thing in the morning.

Thanks, Terry – It’s a pretty good stop-gap. It speeds things up a little and is WAY less annoying.

    • in reply to: Illegal Operation #529110

Problem solved! Thanks to both of you for your help. Legare – I checked the alternate startup directory(windowsapplication datamicrosoftexcel) and deleted the file that was there (excel.xlb). That did the trick.
      Thanks again.

      Ricky –
Thanks for the response. I dug back and found your original post. It looked exactly like mine. Got hold of the eraser program and tried the advice from cri. Unfortunately, my problem must be unrelated because it had no effect. I still get the “illegal operation” message.
I’m reluctant to format the HD because:
      1. Reformat seems to be Dell’s answer to everything.
      2. I’m way too lazy to reformat.
Kind of looks like the options are getting slimmer, tho.
      Thanks,
      Keith

Thanks anyway. It was a registry problem. Got it with a program called RegClean from Microsoft.

Horizontal centering is done, of course, with the centering button on the toolbar. The best way I’ve found to center text vertically in a text box is to go to the Text Box tab in Format Text Box and set the Top and Bottom Internal Margins. A minor hassle but it gets the job done.
      Hope this helps.

Ahh, Phil – You’ve identified my madness but missed the method (avoiding work with activities thinly disguised as work). Besides, if I miss a day, I’ve got twice as much non-work to do the next day.

Another great site (I visit the What’s New section EVERY day) is Winfiles.com. I know I’ve seen team tracking software there – and as for diaries, that’s a section all by itself.

    • in reply to: Highlighting Problem #513069

I understand about hostile users. But just to come at this from another angle, would it be possible to convince the user to make use of the search and replace function built into Word? A simple code would do – eg. ** replaced by “whereas, the party of the second part” throughout the document would save all that highlighting time.

      Good luck

    • in reply to: copy file w/tree #511894

Sure. It’s easiest if you get both the source folder and the destination folder (or drive) visible at the same time. Then, just drag and drop the folder where you want it. All of the files, the sub-folders, and their files will go along for the ride.

      Good luck.
