I have tried pasting to a new worksheet. It still blows the column formatting (critical). In a wierd way, too. Columns 5 wide end up as 6.71 wide, etc. In fact I’ve tried every combination I can think of – moving #1 to #2, #2 to #1, #1 & #2 to a NEW workbook—you get the idea. I’ve also tried the paste-special. Same deal.
The transition idea was interesting. I get the idea that it just sets a default format for saving, though. I couldn’t figure out a good way to use it.
Thanks for all the good ideas, though.

      Phil –
I think you nailed it. Changing the font size had no effect. Then I changed the size of the screen (just slightly smaller) and saved it. After a warm re-boot, the message toolbar came up just fine. It’s not a correction – I may never find out the actual cause – but it’s a good workaround. Bottom line, that’s what counts.

The original Netscape installation came from a download and was installed on 4 machines. The bug is in all of them. I guess something nasty sneaked in at that point.

      Thanks for your help, Phil

      Phil –
I tried recreating the prefs.js file. No go. The message bar is still flaky. It seemed like a good idea, though. Thanks for taking a shot. It’s not something I would have thought of. Like I said, it’s not a huge problem, and I’ve been dealing with it for a good while. Guess I’ll live.
      Thanks again,

Here’s a sure way to tell what version of Windows 98 you’re running.
From a command prompt, type VER. You will get back a line that says something like
Windows 98 [Version 4.10.2222]. If the last 4 numbers are 2222, you’re running Second Edition. If the numbers are 1998, you’re running the original version.
      Hope this helps.
