Kudos to the WOPR warriors — it worked!!
I just had a non-bootable OEM copy of WINDOWS. So, started the fix with a:, accessed the WINDOWS CD, and then (DOS) copied the two files you suggested.
Thank you for saving me from a fate worse than “fdisk”.

    • in reply to: compacting, again (OE6 XP SP2) #1011894

Bob — thanks for the reply, I learned some things about compressing files. But…I don’t want to compress any files. I want to get rid of the OUTLOOK EXPRESS invitation: “To free up disk space , Outlook Express can compact messages.” OK or CANCEL. An OK gets its email messages starting to compress — then stops and declares it can’t go ahead because “OE or some other program is using the files.” This happens every time I close OE!!

From your reply above I thought I’d try to see if some ‘compact files’ setting is around. I can’t find the email folder to make the attempt…..

      Tnx for the reply.
It’s the opposite maddening situation. When I attempt to shut down OE it ALWAYS shows the “Do you want to compact the files?” A yes answer, I believe, starts the compacting process and then quits, declaring it can’t go on because OE or some other program is using the OE files!! A no answer clears the window and gets out of OE, but the same thing happens for the next OE shut down attempt. I don’t want to compact my trivial number of emails; I just want OE to stop asking me about them.

    • in reply to: XP on second Machine (XP Home) #988322

The machine first using my WXP Home (upgrade) is a dead duck.

The WXPH is not an OEM CD.

How does MSoft handle machines destroyed with the original XP on it?

      Tnx for reply

It was where you said it would be. Thank you.

Weird to use when the keyboard acts so strangely. Thank you both above for your replies.
It turns out the brand new keyboard was defective in a way to reverse the action of Caps Lock for alfa characters and would only produce the upper case symbols for numerals. frown

Thank you both for the advice to error on the side of caution. The site cited was extremely useful for pushing me through the logic of what-to-heck-to-buy. If anyone is planning to buy a new machine the TOM’s will walk you through it.

      Tnx, Andy

My apologies to all. My typing is ok but my handwriting is bad. The file that AVG found before it crashed was WINOCX32.EXE. At the time AVG couldn’t remove or quarantine it. Hence the problems reported above. confused3

You done good Alan, just the thing I wanted. Now…

Is there a way to find the Serial Number of the W98 CD? I’m trying to match the CD with the machine it’s running on.

Thanks for the reply. Afraid I did it in reverse order: first PShop 7 installed, then PShop 6 (don’t ask). They are in separate folders. I could dump PS 7 through “Add remove…” and restall in the PS 6 folder. But my itch is to know why I just can’t use the uninstall files in PS 6 to do their job. Your references to PShop support turned out to be too complicated for the simple task of uninstalling PS 6.
      Are you curious too?
