    • in reply to: Win10’s new defaults might break batch files #1587252

Whilst I have never had to write a batch file myself I work with a friend who has written a system of programs and has several “helper” *.bat files. The batch files he has written execute OK on Insider Build 14986 – whether or not the switch in Taskbar Properties is set to open a PowerShell window or a Command window.

Vipre Internet Security 2015 quarantines this file. Identifies Babylon (fs) States it is low risk, and suggest “Ignore”. Using their ‘Restore from Quarantine’ puts it in my download location, momentarily. But immediately quarantines it again.

Has anyone used the ‘free’ Acrobat Pro 8 program mentioned by macropod. Specific question – are security updates provided against that serial number?

    • in reply to: Change from Office 2013 Pro Plus to Office 356 Home Premium #1431652

      Thanks for your answer, Rui.
I’m inclined to uninstall what I have, and then re-install. My Office 2013 installation is a Technet evaluation, and has been updating OK through Windows Update. So no urgency to change at the moment.

And now Joe’s reply arrived while I was typing! Thanks, Joe. Glad to have confirmation that my plan to uninstall and reinstall is the safest.

Thanks for your reply – I wondered if my key being an upgrade had a bearing, hence my query about your key. I’ll wait for the windows update version of 8.1

    • I attempted to upgrade my Dell XPS laptop from Windows 8 Pro x64 to 8.1 Pro x64, using the Technet issue of Windows 8.1 RTM. But it wouldn’t accept my existing Windows 8 Pro product key (a purchased upgrade key.)
Peter, what was your existing Windows 8 product key? I wonder if mine being an upgrade was the reason it wasn’t accepted.
I was planning to see what issues 8.1, as an upgrade, would throw up, but don’t wish to use a Technet key (which will expire next year.) I could go ahead and use the Technet key, and then restore my image, but I’d prefer to avoid doing that.
I dual boot W8 & W8.1 (installed on a separate physical drive, using the Technet key) on my desktop, so know that the DVD is OK.

      Thanks for the heads up!
Anyone else notice that 3 licenses are cheaper than two? I have used Revo Pro on my desktop for years, and only needed two additional licenses – but heh, 3 are cheaper than 2 🙂

I understand the $69 boxed version is an upgrade, not a “full’ version. If you’re starting from scratch you need the System Builder version.

I have had good results with Microsoft ICE (Image Composite Editor) – it’s free, which is a bonus. And it works OK on both Windows 7 and Windows 8 RTM. Doesn’t need a lot of overlap.

    • in reply to: Intermittent Internet connection #1340968

Thank you, but I cannot be precise about when the behaviour began. I did attempt to install Adobe AIR in preparation for installing Zinio Reader probably about the time this issue appeared. (I haven’t been able to install Adobe AIR on this installation of W7 except as a {net user administrator}, but it installed OK on W8, so wouldn’t appear to be corruption in the install exe). But I am not certain about the relative timing. I have changed cables – several times – and am now connected directly to the router rather than through a switch. It is possible that the router has been accidentally moved (it is in a different room). Haven’t had a dropout for several hours since making the cable/connection change, but this has been an intermittent problem, so it will have to hold up for longer before I’m satisfied that the cable/connection change has had any bearing. I had a dropout soon after installing the PCI-e adapter card – I didn’t really think the adapter was the problem, but wanted to assure myself that was the case. I’m currently connected through the built in adapter only.

    • in reply to: Intermittent Internet connection #1340679

Currently I only have the “built in” (to the motherboard) – I now have an adapter card to install – but still in its package. The Driver Date is 20-Jul-2011, the Driver Provider is Intel, the Driver Version is 11.13.51.0.
I “may” get the other card installed later today, but have other commitments that are higher priority.

Thanks for the report. My router is supplied by the ISP, so not so easily replaced as if it was my property. Strangely, I haven’t had a lost connection while running Windows 8 on this same desktop. While I have had dropouts when not using Chrome, I think that the majority have occurred while I was using Chrome – I completely un-installed that, even to removing all registry references, but still had some drop-outs. I’ve re-installed Chrome. I suspect a corrupted entry somewhere deep in my W 7 installation. I performed a nondestructive re-install of W 7, but that hasn’t cured the issue. Am about to collect and fit a new PCI-e network card to see if that will effect a cure. Not very hopeful, but think it is worth trying. I am psyching myself up to doing a format and clean re-install of W 7 if I still get drop-outs after installing the card.

For some projects I find it very convenient to use a third monitor. I disable the card that drives that monitor when I don’t need it, as you see from that clip.

    • in reply to: Intermittent Internet connection #1339964

Well, we are on the same page (the Network Connections Properties sheet) but it is more than a little different for my adapter. The Power Management tab has several additional options – I had to take 2 screen clips to show all. I haven’t lost connectivity while running Windows 8 on this same hardware, and the power management tab in that system is very similar to your, and has the 3 boxes checked.

I suspect there is some corruption in my Windows 7 installation. I am unable to install Adobe AIR as a “pseudo” administrator (but can as a full “net user” administrator). Perhaps there is a relationship ??

This router was supplied by the ISP to permit an upgrade to the plan we are now on – faster, and a higher data limit than the old, but better pricing. Result of competition, no doubt. I understand that the old router, even if I had access to it, would not be compatible.
