Yes, I could see from your screen clips that your router allowed DNS changes – mine is a different router – and perhaps a different ISP has a bearing also.

Thanks for your prompt reply. However the DNS settings are not accessible when Dynamic IP is selected. They do became accessible when Static IP is selected, but the ISP specifies use of a dynamic IP. I have an account with OpenDNS, and used their DNS servers with the previous router supplied by the ISP. So had tried to set them up prior to this intermittent disconnection occurring.

      Hi Roderunner,
Capture1 is what appears when I log onto the router, Capture2 is just the Basic settings page without the LH menus31397-Capture231398-Capture-1

My ISP assigns a dynamic IP. When a dynamic IP is selected here is no facility to change the DNS servers, and I haven’t yet found a reference to MTU in the settings. My router (cable) is not the same model as the one you have shown in the screen captures you posted, the settings pages differ.
      Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the suggestion. The current Intel driver has several options for power management, none as simple as the one you referenced! I think I have it set so that it doesn’t power down the adapter, which is built in to the mobo.

Thanks, but my modem/router, a Netgear CG3100, doesn’t appear to have a facility to modify MTU (nor DNS addresses). But running the suggested ping with a value above 1472 loses the packets, so I assume that the router MTU is set at 1500. I have set the computer MTU to 1500, and the ping is OK at 1472, but no higher.

    • in reply to: Standby resume failure (WXP Pro SP2) #968100

Thanks for prompting me to search further for drivers – I was using the latest Promise Controller driver from Asus thinking that would be the most up-to-date (even though it was unsigned. I found a later driver (signed) and that has fixed the issue. My system will now resume from standby OK. It isn’t going into standby after the time interval selected in Power Options, but that is not a concern. I haven’t tested hibernate yet.

      Thanks, Leif.
Your second point was the one! I don’t know why I hadn’t checked that ‘Advanced” tab myself – confused myself by trying to find something less obvious!
      Thanks again.

    • in reply to: apphelp.dll #559847

So apphelp.dll is an XP file! Explains why it is not present on my W2k notebook, either. I have copied the appwiz.cpl file from that machine to this one, but that hasn’t helped.
No doubt my (abortive) attempt to install Norton System Works 2002 caused the trouble. I haven’t been able to locate apphelp.dll on the NSW CD. Probably hidden in one of the *.msi files, or a *.cab that Winzip is unable to open.
I’ll see if I can get any help from Symantec.

    • in reply to: CPU usage #534596

Thanks for your responses, Leif and Mark. The issue hasn’t raised it’s ugly head since my first post! It has never been consistent, so I’ve never got round to doing what you suggest, Mark. Being lazy. I’ll probably just resort to the restart workaround unless this problem starts showing up more frequently.
But perhaps someone else has found a culprit, and a solution?

      Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar…s/Q281/3/73.ASP
I followed this and now my address book is sorted last, first.
I’ve installed the olk1001.exe upgrade, don’t know if that had any bearing, as I hadn’t found my way to the sort change sheet prior to installing it.

Win Doctor gave me the error message that gapi32.dll could not be found, and Dependency Walker flagged the problem also. Dependency Walker indicated that gapi32.dll was expected to be in WINNTSystem32 so I copied it there from Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033NT. Dependency Walker finds it OK now.

    • in reply to: Intermittent printer problem #512835

Thanks for the tip about the cable connections. I should have thought of that.
So I’ll remake the connections and see if that fixes it. BTW, it is a parallel port connection, so no alternate port to try. A lot of my printing is from Word 2k, and that is where I have seen the error. I also print from Publisher, and TurboCad. The error hasn’t appeared in those print runs, but then it is intermittent.
      Thanks again, Lionel.
