If I didn’t have the file, I’d certainly use this technique until the file came through. Now that I have the file, I have a different problem as noted above.

    • in reply to: Problem e-mail attachments #1271912

I finally got the file as a zipped file sent the normal way. I don’t know why it it didn’t arrive sooner. However, when I tried to replace my file with the new one, I got the following message:

“Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file. Name: quicken.chm”

Is there any way to by-pass this security block? (Perhaps this should be posted in another part of the Lounge?)

      Thanks, John
I’ll suggest that to the Intuit tech people, and if it solves the problem, I’ll thank you again!

    • in reply to: Patch Watch adds problem-patch update chart #1271591

I agree with most everyone that the new chart is a great idea. In the past I carefully tracked (I thought) patch recommendations, but I have three patches for which I have no information. Perhaps somewhere along the line I missed something. The three in question are KB2475792, KB2454826 and KB2487426. I also wonder why I get MS patch recommendations for Office 2007 when I don’t have the program installed. Any comments would be welcome.

My OS is Win7 Home Premium 64 bit. I have downloaded the MS PageDefrag program to defrag my registry keys, but I am unable to run it. I keep running into roadblocks not being recognized as an administrator and not having permissions. I have right clicked the program and gone into properties and then the security tab. I have all “allowed” checks under my name but they are grayed out. I keep getting the “Make sure that you are an administrator. Error loading PageDefrag driver.” message. I had the same problem in Windows Explorer when I tried to open the “Application Data” folder under my user name and got a message that it was not accessible and that access was denied.. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can get around these problems? This whole business of dealing with permissions is extraordinarily frustrating!

Further to my last post, I have determined that what I thought were image backups were in fact data backups. When I go to Backup & Restore in Control Panel and click on “Manage space” it shows that I have 69.46 GB in System Image. The files I found only add up to 10.22 GB and they are data files. There is another folder on my backup drive titled “WindowsImageBackup”. That folder has three sub folders – “Backup 2010-11-06 014900”, “Catalog” and SPPMetadataCache”. Those folders account for about 30 GB. My challenge now is to find the other 39 1/2 GB of System Image, and I have no clue as to where to look!

Thank you for your response,Ted. I assume that “E:(MySeagate)” is your back up drive. When I created my total image backups, I just selected my J: (backup) drive without any specific destination. For the future I suppose the solution is to create a “My Backups” folder on that drive and be more specific with the destination when doing an image backup.

In the meantime I did find what I think are the earlier image backups in a folder titled “Our Computer”. There are 6 sub folders called “Backup Set” with dates and in each sub folder there are folders called “Backup Files” (again with a date). Next on the tree are zipped backup files numbered from 1 to 9 and expanding each of them is C>Users>Our Computer>…… and so forth. I don’t have anything nice and neat like your Complete_HD_Image files with a “.tib” extension. Is that something I can do when I do another image backup? In the past I wasn’t aware of that option.

    • in reply to: System Image issue #1252650

Thanks for your prompt reply, Joe. This reply is delayed because I wasn’t aware I had a response (no e-mail notification). It just occurred to me that I recently changed my ISP and had new e-mail addresses. I advised Windows Secrets of the change, but not the Lounge. That has now been corrected.

So going from your response, you were right about the backups being just data backups. When I clicked on “Manage space” in the Back up and Restore window, I found that I had 10.22GB in data file backups – the sum of the backups listed in my original post. It also showed that I had 71.74GB in System Image, 28.91GB in Other Files and 38.18GB Free Space. More to the point is I found when starting another image backup that I needed 51.07GB of free space to make an image back up. So that is why every time I tried it, all that got backed up were data files.

When I did some poking around on the back up drive, I wound up deleting one of the older system images and now have plenty of free space to create a new system image.

    • in reply to: recovering Favorites #1241262

I was able to restore my lost I.E.8 Favorites by copying a folder found in C:(user name)Favorites on my system (Win7 Home Premium). While I now have access to Favorites again, I have found that cannot add any new favorites as I get an “Unspecified error” message. Obviously something still isn’t right. Any additional suggestions would be welcome.

    • in reply to: convert .wri files? #1211104

      Thank you for your responses.

I found that I could install an older version of MS Office and it runs fine in Win 7. Now I not only can open all of my old files (including the .wri files) but my old Publisher files as well.

All’s well that ends well, I guess!

    • in reply to: Old XP Computer to new Win7 Laptop – transfer #1209396

I copied all the files (1 at a time) from my backup drive where I had saved them to the new WLM store location. They are O.E.’s “dbx” files and apparently WLM cannot read them. They don’t show up in the new store location either. Now what?

    • in reply to: Old XP Computer to new Win7 Laptop – transfer #1209279

I read these posts with interest because I had essentially the same problem. I had saved my address book in both csv & wab formats and my messages from the store folder to an external hard drive. After setting up WLM on the Win7 computer, I went through the import process. My contacts all came through fine as did my inbox, sent mail & deleted mail. However none of the other mail folders transferred. When I tried just selected folders, I got the following error message: “Not all of the messages from the (selected folder) could be imported. An error has occurred.” I am wondering if there is some other approach I could take. I did not have WLM running on the XP computer. Would that make a difference?
