I need to add to this sordid story! After about 5+hours,my regular desktop came back,BUT on the taskbar, bottom right, there was a notice that this is not a legitimate Microsoft copy and I couldn’t even get the computer to connect to the internet. So,I tried to restart. It would not because the explorer exe would not close. So I just unpowered the computer and restarted it manually. After the usual message of not having closed properly,my regular desktop came back and I am writing this on it,IT WORKS AS BEFORE.I checked the download history, and only yesterday’s 10 downloads(including the infamous KB…2664 are visible.
UNBELIEVABLE.Microsoft always makes sure that one is annoyed using their system. So,the above problem is solved???How long, only MS knows.

You could uninstall GWX Control Panel as it could be checking the updates, but your antivirus program will also be checking them and could be a bit slow in releasing them.

See if their install goes a bit smoother with GWX uninstalled and your AV program disabled, but the slowest one will be the MSRT update as it runs a scan on installation.

Thanks very much!I just did the uninstall on GWX because it serves a purpose no longer.I am still grateful for their help in avoiding the onslaught that MS did in order to force Win 10 down our throat.Knowing them, they will not give up until we all have 10 or turn to Apple,(or drop dead).Thank you all for your valuable help that we(non techies)couldn’t do without!

I have WU set to “Never Check for Updates” and I downloaded the Security only package KB 3192391 from the MS Update catalog and installed it. When I double clicked to start the installation, it searched for updates for about a minute and then started to initialize, then proceeded to install with a reboot required at the end.
In other words, changing WU to “Never Check for Updates” should do the trick for installing the packages.
      These are my WU settings:
      45879-WU

After 12 and a half hours of running the check,it finally downloaded and installed 3185330.I checked for more updates, there were 9 important ones, one of which the …2664 which is about Win 10 and that I unchecked and tried to have the others installed. Now,for the past 3 hrs.it is “installing”the 2nd of 8 updates(it is about Silverlight). It is just a never ending bother to work with MS.It keeps all you kind volunteers constantly busy too!Sad,sad, sad.I shall leave this going(the installation((?)overnight.See if I get lucky with it by morning. That is the situation now.And thanks to all for you attention to this.I am most grateful!Just one question:does the CWX control panel influences this at all(in a negative way, should I delete it for a possible improvement?
      Thank you!

Well,I have reset my computer to automatic downloads,STILL I GET NO UPDATES AFTER SEVERAL HOURS.The two update items suggested KB…369 and KB…605 when I look it up at the download center are all for 64 or higher machines, whereas mine is a 32.So now I am totally clueless.Even if Ms.Bradley comes up with the much awaited suggestions,my machine doesn’t seem to oblige, short of maybe trying to download each suggested one ONE AT A TIME.That would probably take me a whole day,the way these downloads have been going even when I did get them. When changing to automatic download, the GWX Control Panel immediately warned about Win 10 stuff may be coming. So,one really doesn’t know what to do in my situation. For now, other than waiting,I shall do NOTHING,because I can’t do otherwise. And thank you for telling me about the reply techniques.Sorry,I did not know, now I do and will follow the suggestion next time. This comment however is sad as it is,a general situation. Thanks to all the volunteers for taking the time to respond!!!

Be so kind to read my last question on this issue, that I posted Oct.21.Thank you.

I am still waiting for Ms.S.B.’s advice, but since there is no sign from MS that there is a new update this month,IN SPITE OF ME ASKING FOR IT,AND RUNNING SEARCH FOR LONG,I was wondering if re-setting my computer from “notify me about downloads but let me decide when and what to download”to AUTOMATIC DOWNLOAD,especially in the light of Ms have had take the choice away anyway!!!!
Could one of you more technically knowledgeable kindly let me know whether this could MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
      Thank you!

    • in reply to: No update notification #1581629

Will do!Waiting for S.B.to advise. The many hours of waiting for check for updates is frustrating,as well as sometimes just futile.I had a feeling my problem is not unique.
      Thank you for your advice!

Actually,I have kind of similar experience as of late.I have to check for update running for several hours. When it does go on finally, the download percentage is always 0 for hours on end, until it starts to install.MS is just a lot of continuous headache.I walk a lot,and there are many coffee houses in this town, and I see many people using computers while there-ALL OF THEM APPLE-S.There is a reason for that.(See above and many more)

Well, many thanks and congratulations on your well deserved success. However,if the earlier comment was too much tech for me,yours is way over my head, but I appreciate your perseverance and the fact that you deemed to communicate with (dummy)me.Thanks again!

    • in reply to: No update notification #1581439

I decided I am not tech smart enough(after reading all those articles you kindly recommended,I shall just wait for Ms.S.B.
The article that was referred to about downloading those 2 updates(…369 and …605)refer to Win 7 64 bit machines. No mention of 32-s such as mine. That just adds to my confusion. But,thanks very much for taking the time to respond to me!!!Much obliged!!!

    • in reply to: Outlook.com icon to desktop? #1580260

Heartfelt big THANK YOU to you all who gave me good advice(as happens always).I finally managed by putting an icon on the desktop and changing the properties. So,my problem is solved. It makes my life easier, especially because the Outlook I am forced to use by MS now is much slower than when I had the Windows Live Mail(even though it was a defunct 2011 version-it finally stopped working from one day to the other, which forced me to Outlook).
Thank you all so much again! It is wonderful to have Windows Secret Lounge. It is like having a computer technician in my room at all times-and FREE at that.

    • in reply to: Outlook.com icon to desktop? #1580057

It seems I am really dumb, because I tried all of the above(in my windows 7 system of course)and none was working. My browser is Google.would that alter the above instruction(like from Internet Explorer, or iexplore.exe?Whatever is the problem,it is just not accepted by the system, not even into the copy of an icon when I tried to change the Properties.I guess I give up.I access my hotmail through going to msn.com and the Outlook mail is part of that webpage.
Thank you all for your efforts!!!!

    • in reply to: Outlook.com icon to desktop? #1579878

Thanks v.much for your response.Unfortunately,I am not knowledgeable enough it seems(not surprised).I tried the shortcut tab(by R click on desktop, etc.)and put in the initial stuff into what must have been the target field, but I saw no Start field(it only had:Next and when clicked on that,it found nothing.Bottom line, what seems simple for you,is not only not simple for me,but seems impossible. Is there an “easier”way for a beginner?
      Thanks anyway!

    • in reply to: Secunia PSI Application #1578688

It may not be anything new,but I have been using the Version2.0 for many years on my (getting old)Win 7 (32)system successfully. It is not slow(my computer is)and I can ignore anything I decide.I too do not use it to update, but usually go to the site and update there faster, than leaving it to Secunia, but I DO USE THE FINDINGS!When Version 3.0 came out years ago,I didn’t see any reason to change((if it is not broke…),so I am still with the ancient 2.0

    • in reply to: Win Update not offered #1577997

What you write is quite true, but at least these updates are available easily. As it is I did not download IOS 10 on my iPad(choice?!),will see if I shall.I finally managed to download Sept.’s Win updates,12 offered,10 downloaded(2 are waiting as suggested by Ms.Bradley),IT TOOK ALL DAY!Over 10 hours to complete! And I had to search for it.It ws not offered.
