AskWoody LoungerGawk! That’s so bad!!!
Am I talking about the feature, or the new MSKB search engine that didnt’ manage to turn up that article in my searches. Either way, not a good day.
BTW, don’t you love the lines: “Microsoft Access 2000 includes a new feature that is named AutoFill. This feature is built into Access, and it is always enabled. You cannot disable it. ”
Excuse me?
Does anyone know if this nasty has been changed in XP?

AskWoody LoungerNO! Any number field will do so, and, bizarrely, it only happens once. For instance if you fill 1, then 2, as you move to the next field access will add 3, but when you move again, it will not add 4. It also happens for increments of 2, but not for increments of 3 or higher.

AskWoody LoungerWell F5 takes you from form design view to form view, but not back again, but I guess your right (sigh)
Are any of the niggling things that anyone spending more time designing databases than using them finds really annoying about Access 2k (find and replace, use of default form template outside current database, keyboard shortcuts for design view switching etc) fixed in XP?
Thanks anyway, I’ll stop looking now.

AskWoody LoungerInitially it was just IP and I left the copmuters belonging to the domain. Just connecting them together and browsing the network led me to the domain of oxwell, to which belonged the computer I was browsing on, but not the other one, which I could not find any other way (remember that at this stage neither is connected to a domain controller). As I have no “server” in this configuration, as you point out, there was nowhere to get the ip from, and I don’t know how to get around this, being a networking ignormamus.
As I had to link them, I temporarily (though my work admin is going to be upset when I take the laptop back to work next week) left the domains, put them in the same workgroup and used NetBeui, and everything works fine, but this is not a long term solution.
So, is it possible to have both computers belonging to the work domain, and network together without access to the domain controller? If I want to use IP, where should they get their addresses from?
All the web articles on home networking either use a workgroup and netBeui, and for anyone who knows about networks, this stuff is so noddy as to not be published, except as chapter 5 of large networking books, which I will never use chapters 6 to 44 of (and probably not 1-4 either)!
If you can enlighten me I’d be very grateful.
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerDear Stuart,
You’ve lost me, but I’m interested. Precise situation: win98SE laptop goes back and forward to work, network identification belongs to domain WORK, Client for Microsoft Networks set to log in to NT domain. Win2k Professional desktop, as described above. Network with 2 NIC’s and crossover cable only. My understanding was that to network in this fashion the computers must belong to the same workgroup, and cannot belong to a domain because there is no domain controller to provide permissions etc.
I did explore making direct connections, but was only given the option of parallel or serial (outgoing) or parallel or modem (incoming) connections. The NIC doesn’t appear.
Are you saying that it is possible to have both computers belonging to the work domain, remaining offline to the domain controller and yet still be able to network to one another. Tell me more.
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerDoes the hardware profile determine whether the computer belongs to a domain or a workgroup? I thought not. Even if I disable the NIC on my desktop when I want to connect to my work server via dial up, it still won’t alter the fact that I have to belong to a workgroup, not a domain, to be able to see the local laptop. The problem would seem even more intractable with the laptop, where the NIC is required both for home (workgroup) and work (domain) network access. Please let me know if I’m wrong.
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerThanks Rory, that’s what I did in the end.
BTW, is there any difference in the resource usage or handling of:
Dim trvVar As TreeView
Set trvVar = Me!tvDatabase1.Objectand
Dim trvVar As Object
Set trvVar = Me!tvDatabase1or similar with another type of object. Are there parallels with using variants, or are there properties you can access with one method but not the next, or is it just about neatness and readability (in which case I’d better start with my handwriting)?
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerHalf the answer to my question was that apparently when A2000 compacts, the dates of all items are changed to that date. Doesn’t explain why the date updated doesn’t reflect subsequent updates, though. Still working on that one.

AskWoody LoungerThanks Wendell,
I solved my problem (although have not satisfied my curiosity) by declaring it as object, not TreeView. What on earth the variable type TreeView (selected from helpful drop down list following Dim trvVar As..) is if it’s not a Treeview control I don’t know. Interestingly everything in the code in the ActiveX example DB you pointed me towards is declared as object, even the nodes (declared as Node in most other Treeview code I’ve seen).
Anyway, thanks for the help.
Just out of interest, does anyone know the answer to my first question: what determines the dateupdated date for an object in MSysObjects?

WSMark P
AskWoody LoungerThanks Wendell, but i’d already done that, and moved it up the list just in case. My understanding was that I wouldn’t have been able to put it on my form in the first place if the reference hadn’t been there. My problem remains that a Treeview control is apparently mismatched with an (object?) variable declared in vba as treeview. And this is not my code – but from someone (magazine suggested by Charlotte) who I would have thought would know what they’re talking about.
Extensive search of both MSDN and KB unhelpful, except to note that nowhere in any code is the treeview variable declared – only the nodes seem to be declared. spooky.
I think I’ll try just declaring it as an object and see what happens.

AskWoody LoungerThanks Wendell, but I’d already checked that this reference was there (and moved it up the list just to make sure). My understanding was that I wouldn’t have been able to put the control on the form in design view without this reference. So, the problem is not finding the treeview control or putting it on the form, but that the treeview control is apparently not the same thing as a TreeView (object?) variable in VBA. At least that’s what I thought a Type Mismatch error meant.
I haven’t found much joy with the help either. I’ve already done a thorough knowledge base search, without finding anything to help me, and as for help, the most useful error message I get is that MSDN is not installed, when I try and access help from the TreeView Control – Properties window. Tried searching the MSDN downloads section without joy. Have also tried looking in MSDN library for help with this problem, and found nothing.
Feeling v stupid!

AskWoody LoungerNow I’m really confused!! I thought that WWW was the only one that did not have a text version equivalent, which is why I get the html version. This version has no link for converting to text. WOW and WOW-Tips (ex WOWMM) both come as text only, according to my subscription notices, and WAW purports to come as text and html, but I’ve seen no evidence of the former.
The plot thickens – my subscribe note (12/2000) for WWW says it’s only available in html, and there’s no link in WWW html to change, but having visited the changesubscribe page, it’s listed as both!! Well, I’ve changed again here and we’ll see what happens.
I know the archives are available, but for us poor people stuck with (not very reliable) dial up access, where email is the most reliable, and certainly the quickest and cheapest, way to get anything from outside the country, they’re not a desirable alternative.

AskWoody LoungerAs usual, I seem to have the poor relation of html help files – I had to search out and load the ado and dao help files into my system directory before I could access those, and now I am having the same blank help screen each time I try to find any help on the Treeview control. As it was, I was looking for something more (the meanings in lowly Mark speak of the querytype parameter values), but I did find some information on this in the MSDN library. I am still no wiser, however, as to why this:
Dim trvVar As TreeView
Set trvVar = Me!tvDatabase1 ‘the name of the MS TreeView Control V6.0 on the form of which this code is part of a ButtonOnClick routineshould produce a type mismatch error.
Any thoughts?

WSMark P
AskWoody LoungerThank you as ever, Charlotte,
Now, if only I could get it to work!! For some reason am getting a typemismatch for passing the treeview control. Have you ever tried using them. All the correct references are there, and I’ve tripled checked spellings etc, but still getting type mismatch error. Hmmm. Lack of documentation doesn’t help.
I’ll also need to play around with the schemas specified to get what I want (I need to compare forms and reports and everything). Do you know where the OpenSchema parameters are documented? Ah – just found something on this, though it doesn’t look complete – http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default….tschemaenum.asp
Thanks

AskWoody LoungerJust my 2p – I installed win2k pro (in the hope of greater system stability) on my laptop with similar spec, but only 300MHz Celeron, jumped through all the BIOS upgrade hoops etc, and eventually reverted to w98 because it was just tooooo slow (we’re talking 6 minute boot times, and ages to do anything). Tried several reinstalls, newsgroup searching etc to improve, but in the end just gave up. More memory might have helped, but at the time it was too expensive. It may still be worth it, but I suggest you just think about why you’re doing it and whether those reasons make it worth the hassle you will have to go through.
