AskWoody LoungerMy son has been home for the holidays and has been using my machine. He encountered the WiFi problem and did the first thing that I did. He uninstalled and reinstalled the network card. That was a week ago and the connection has been stable since then. As far as I am concerned the matter is resolved. Some fixes are less satisfying than others. This one feels about as random as the problem itself.
Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions.

AskWoody LoungerHi mark! You could possible have a adapter card going south. Routers do go bad also, but if other devices are running OK, then pretty much rule that out. I just saw that problem before. I used the device manager to up date the network adapter and haven’t seen any more problems.
Could be, but the machine is brand new.

AskWoody LoungerYou are quite correct, it is not an sfc report. Sorry about that. Correct file now attached. I won’t tell you how that happened except to say it was grossly stupid.
I am not sure that this file will show anything. On this occasion I ran SFC and nothing happened. That is to say WiFi stayed down. I ran SFC a second time and my WiFi was up again within a few seconds of starting it.
Of the commands you suggest; first one reported operation completed successfully . The second one said restore operation completed successfully. I am going to run the last one now.
@holdum333 I might come back to look at the router but at the moment I have a Win 7 machine, an XP box, a tablet and various phones all running off it quite happily. When this thing happens I can’t make any changes to network settings on the affected box.
OK, on reboot after running shutdown /r /t 00 , WiFi was down. I ran sfc again. The log is saved here as sfcdetails2.

AskWoody LoungerHi Sudo, well I might have been feeling lucky but no fix.
This morning my wife powered on the machine and no wifi. An update had been downloaded but not installed (I.E. Flash Player for Win 10 ver 1511 for x64 based systems KB 3132372) Event Viewer was showing an error for every log (not precise but something like error – no log available). Worrying in it’s self.I ran SFC as usual and the CBS log is attached. If you can have a look at it I would be very grateful. Nothing jumps out at me but that is probably lack of knowledge on my part.
For what it’s worth, the update installed it’s self while the sfc scan was under way.

AskWoody LoungerHi Coochin, Okay, I have made exactly the changes you describe and i am feeling lucky! I’ll just have to wait now and see what happens. Thanks.
I will give it about a week and report back. In the mean time, thanks everyone.

AskWoody LoungerHi jwoods, using the WiFi analyzer on my phone I can see that I am away out on my lonesome on channel 11. But I will keep this under review. Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerHi Sudo, I have had a look at this log (a few days after the last instance of the problem) and I can’t decipher it. I will post it here, fresh, if the problem recurs. Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerOh dear. I am just beginning to realise how out of date I am. I keep thinking “But what image file?” and now I have to think “install.esd, not i386”.
It gets worse… when I said ‘clean install’ I meant ‘clean’. Bare metal and in the process obliterated about 7 partitions thinking no going back to Win 8. I am guessing that an install.wim file should have been stored somewhere on the disk. There isn’t at the moment.
I am going to slow down, kick back and do some reading.

AskWoody LoungerThanks djohnson. I ran this command a couple of nights ago without success. I’ve just repeated it in the way you suggest but still no joy.

AskWoody LoungerThanks Sudo15. It didn’t work (error – no image detected – even though it appeared to run and hung at 20% as expected) but you have introduced me to the DISM command which I didn’t know about. Prior to buying this new box all my machines have been running either Win 7 or XP. Win 8 has completely passed me by so there must be a ton of stuff I need to catch up on. Thanks for the heads up.
Just for the sake of completeness, I ran SFC in safe mode but same story. It detects corrupt files but can’t fix them. I am going to look at DISM in more detail but otherwise just wait for the mighty corporation to fix this.

AskWoody LoungerWoody covered this in an article today (section headed Windows 10 Store won’t start on page 2), and has links to a few workarounds, but ends that section with, “It’s another problem that doesn’t seem to have a single solution.”:
12 Windows 10 install issues — and what to do about them
It sounds like you’ve tried most things though. (You meant WSreset, not WSrestore, right?)
I do mean reset, not restore. More speed less haste!
That’s some coincidence. I will have a look at the article now. Thanks. -

AskWoody LoungerHi Roderunner,
I have already done this and it has solved the problem. Webpages are loading much faster.I had thought that DNS settings in the router would override TCP/IP properties set on the desktop. (In other words I would have to enable Open DNS on the router). It has proved not to be the case.
Thanks for all your help.
Regards,

AskWoody LoungerHi Roderunner,
I emailed the router manufacturers last night to see if a firmware upgrade was available but the device has been unsupported for years. I also asked if there was a way to change the DNS addresses that I had missed, because I want to try OpenDNS. They replied that it was possible to simply change the IP configuration on my network adapter to use new DNS addresses.Whilst I am still trying to get my head around the routing involved, it seems to work. Today, no page is taking more than about 10 seconds to load. My email client gets through checking 11 accounts in less than a second, rather than about 20 – 30. My default gateway and DHCP server are as they were, the LAN side port on the router. The DNS requests seem to be bypassing the router configuration.
If I get time this afternoon I will run Traceroute on the two configurations and see how they compare.

AskWoody LoungerHi Roderunner,
I have suspected the issue was DNS related from the start because it applies to all and any machine using my connection. My ISP have assured me that there is no problem but then they would say that (Talk Talk).
To answer your question; I have always just accepted the default DNS servers that my ISP supplies. I didn’t realise that I had any other option until I looked up ‘OpenDNS’.I have gone through every setting in my router several times and I don’t think it allows me to change the primary and secondary DNS server ip addresses. I will recheck. It might be possible by creating a new account. It is a pretty basic Etec router / modem that must be close to 12 years old. I think it might be time to splash out on a new one.
In the meantime, thanks for your help. You have taught be something I didn’t know and I am grateful.

AskWoody LoungerHi Roderunner,
Yes, I have flushed DNS on all my machines. No change.A pal of mine has just had a play on this machine. He reckons I am being overly sensitive and should expect a media rich page to take some time to load. I agree but not in excess of a minute.
I have just gone on Google news and clicked on the first Telegraph article on Algeria (for example). It took 65 seconds to load fully. While it is loading it is being redirected to Maxymiser, Wunderloop and Doubleclick (and many more.. these were just the ones I could read) I think these are all cookie setting ad sites. It seemed to be pulling in video links from a number of different servers too.
Would you consider this too slow?
