      Thanks to all who responded.

I thought USB Safeguard would be the answer, but it failed to format my 128 MB FAT usb. I’m going to try truecrypt even though that seems like overkill.

      WOPR, opps, Windows Secrets, rocks!

Ted – Thanks. I did the same search and was slogging my way through the entries when I had the idea to check out my favorite PC board – WOPR! I was hoping someone had experience with a specific program that worked.

Roderunner – Thanks. The program looks like you it is tied to a specific PC. If you want to be able to access your USB on multiple PC’s, you need to 1) purchase a Business license and 2) have the helper app installed on each PC. Unfortunately, not a good solution when I can use any number of different PC’s at work.

Paul – Thanks, but I’m trying to find a solutions where access to the drive itself is disabled until after the password is entered. Otherwise, if I lose the USB can’t someone just delete the partition and reuse the drive. Have you tried truecrypt?

The U3 interface with cruzer showed the drive as invalid in Windows explorer until a password was entered. Very elegant and workable program. Why they abandoned it I can’t immediately imagine.

    • in reply to: PDF to Word – any reliable products? #1277105

Thanks guys. I think part of the difficulty is that this pdf is scanned from a printed source. SoldiConverter seems to have a way to deal with this, but I have to try it out first.
So I’ve learned something about pdf files – when is text not text? When it is scanned and created as a bitmap!

You can specify how much of your CPU that Acronis consumes while it is backing up. I would rather have it run as fast as possible, so it uses 100% of my CPU – it is NOT really productive to do anything while it is running.

To back up my 45 GB drive with Windows and Programs (no data), it takes about 10 minutes and creates a 15 GB backup image.

      Thanks. That was very helpful.

I backup every about every week with novabackup. I’m curious about Acronis image backup. Does Acronis use a lot of memory when automatically backing up while you are using the computer? Does it take a lot of time to do an image backup?

I’ve used 82 Gb of a 300 Gb main harddrive, attached to an external harddrive which is using 205 Gb of spacout of 600 Gb. I have an XP with SP 3 and 2.5 Gb of memory. My working day uses Word, Excel and an editor for an interactive whtieboard (tends to be a bit of a memory hog, I think).

Any thoughts about using Acronis in addition to novabackup?
      TIA

    • in reply to: Software to update drivers – good idea or not? #1262763

      Ted,
Thanks for suggesting filehippo. It picked up some things PSI didn’t. I’m currently using both programs…….

      Paul,
Tried PSI. Just what the doctor ordered!. Very elegant program!

      Thanks

      Clint,
Thanks. That’s what I had thought, but I didn’t want to put my system at risk by avoiding possible underlying driver problems. Since I posted, I saw a thread where some driver software actually loaded extra unneeded drivers onto a user’s system.

      Caveat emptor!

      Hi,
I’ve been using KeePass for the last few weeks. Very straightforward. I especially like the keyboard shortcuts to open a browser, go to a site and fill in the ID and Password.

      Good luck!

    • in reply to: windows popup asks if i want to compress outlook files #1180636

I’m also getting this message, but my installation of Office 2007 is over a year old. It’s an Outlook Express message, but I have no idea why the dialog box appears when I startup recently (Windows XP SP3). I don’t use OE.I haven’t installed any new programs.

      Has anyone else experienced this?

      Thanks in advance.

    • Yes, I can!!!! But I still can’t select a template after reinstallation. I tried ccleaner and there were some leftover MLI references related to CPA. I cleaned those and will try a fresh install tomorrow, but I’m not hopeful. Any further thoughts?

      Mark

Are you able to uninstall it now?

      Joe

    • Joe, That didn’t work. I think the program got corrupted somehow and all traces need to be removed. CCleaner didn’t work. It received the same informaitonal message that Add/Remove Programs did.

CPA is unsupported by Microsoft, but a really useful program. I also posted on the Microsoft bulletin board. Do you have any other things I could try?

      Mark

You could try the recently released Download details: Calendar Printing Assistant for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

      Joe

    • Thanks, but reinstalling did not help. Any other ideas?

As usual, you are quick with a good response. I’m going to try it tonight.
