      Thanks for that. I was hoping to have the header repeat only as needed rather than “hardcode” it right across the page. I suppose that the header doesn’t know how many columns are in the detail, but I was hoping Access worked slightly diffferently.

      Nonetheless, it’s no point persuing an imaginary solution just because that’s how I think it should work, so thanks again for putting me on the right track.

      Regards,
      Martin

      Follow on comment:
      In the subreport, I unchecked File > Page Setup > Columns > Width same as detail, but couldn’t find a way to specify that the report header width be different to the report detail width (using A2003). When I made the subreport wide enough for the three headers, the detail width followed and most of the report was off the page.
      I simply put the “subreport header” into the main form as a bunch of labels in the right sort of place and deleted the subreport header. The result is no different to having three columns worth of headings in the subreport header anyway. Simple, Ugly And Very Effective.

      That’s just what I needed, too. Now.. I have a subreport which I’ve set to three columns accross the page. I have a report header with column headings and the report detail has the data. Can I make the report header repeat across the page just like the detail does?

      I can’t see any properties of the report header or in page setup > columns that can help me, and if I make the report header a page header, I lose the column names completely.

      Thanks,
      Martin

    • in reply to: Left Join Issue (Access 2003) #981291

      Blush mumble mumble. Sorry, very silly mistake and it all works as it should, without the nz().
      Got the crosstab mostly worked out. Currently takes three queries (I’m a fan of the single clever query) and it gives me an average column I don’t need, but it works.

      Thanks again and apologies for being a duffer.

    • in reply to: Left Join Issue (Access 2003) #981269

      Hans,

      The nz() expression results in all timeslots from tblAllTimeSlots taking the value 0, irrespective of the records in qryErrorCount23614. I have done a sanity check for typos, can’t see anything. I’d have expected the original query to work even with nulls (that’s the purpose of the left join?).

      Thanks,
      Marty

      Handy little file that, but I don’t believe I can get such a utility into the system due to the disk format issue.
      I now also suspect the centronics 24 pin interface was used by IEEE-484 printers?

    • in reply to: Re: Scheduled task with a UNC path #802500

      Joe,
      All appears well with the administrator account (happily, a member of the administrators group) and the following comes from the command prompt (machine name changed to MyServer)

      COMPUTERNAME=MyServer
      LOGONSERVER=MyServer
      USERDOMAIN=MyServer
      USERNAME=administrator
      c:>pushd MyServerAppsPath
      z:>pushd OtherServerDataPath
      y:>popd
      z:>popd
      c:>

      So it has the network access as required. I still think that the schedule is running as local system and I think I need a way to change that globally for all schedules, rather than on a one by one basis.

      Joe,

      I can see the task in this location. When I look at the properties it says the task will run as MachineNameAdministrator. This isn’t the same as “log on as system” which I see in the services properties. The machine is a server but we don’t have a domain (no, don’t ask..). I presume that the machine administrator on the server has network access. I appreciate this is not true in the world of domains.
      I am loath to use the properties interface as I understand this precludes use of the command line for further control.
      Also, I presume I can’t use this method to set the defaults for the scheduled tasks that are created on the fly (and will be long gone by the time I come to see them).

      I’d read about the replacement etc but the only place I see it is in services. I don’t have Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks for some reason (sanity check: administrator). So unfortunately, I haven’t “been there” because I can’t find “there”! Would a reapplication of sp6 and / or IE6 be indicated here?
      One issue will be that tasks are being created by a batch file (which is itself scheduled), and these new tasks will need to have network access as well. Hopefully I can give all tasks a useful Run As default.

      In Control Panel > Services, it says “Task Scheduler”.
      The machine is NT4 server sp6a IE6.0, and from a microsoft KB I expected to find the service “Scheduler” which it is not.

      In reply to both Joe and John…
      Joe,
      The automatic updates are released about once a week, and if you ftp (or manually download) you can get updates about once a day. Hence I’m trying to use this method to get the more frequent updates. In a perfect world, I’d like to query the server for updates quite regularly – without downloading anything unless necessary.
      I’ll have a look at the ftp tool. My problem is not the functionality rather the possible reliability of the windows ftp client (if it is actually a client problem). For that matter running from W2000 seemed *more* stable (but not perfect) so I might rearrange my setup to download from W2000 and then transfer the defintion to the server once I’ve got it.

      John,
      I had come to the conclusion that if the ftp failed, I’d schedule a retry in a few minutes. The batch file I am using has grown rather large with it’s error checking so adding a retry or two will be no problem at all. Actually I’ve written the new version but not yet implemented it. Again I was hoping to hear if someone else had seen a similar problem, because if the server is simply refusing to talk to me then a retry won’t really help.
      I don’t want my retries to compromise the next “normal” definition check, so I’ll probably only allow one; we’ll see how the creature responds!

      Thanks all
      Marty
