    • An obvious question for info that I didn’t see in your original post: What mouse brand & software are you using?
One time after an update to my browser, I started having some mouse problems. Changing some of the settings fixed it.
Btw, I used to run Opera and IE at the same time (until I no longer needed Java and dumped it completely) and never had any problems.

      Security Advisory 2794220
This is a bit confusing. I was not offered the patch for my system running IE8 on XP. The link to the Advisory within your link ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2794220 ) says, “Microsoft is investigating public reports of a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Internet Explorer 8. Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 10 are not affected by the vulnerability.” Notice it says, “are NOT affected.” Also, it seems only the fix is available and not a patch. Note that the Advisory was updated 12/31/12.

    • in reply to: Recommend simple macro writer? #1352403

I believe the person said, “simple”, and I don’t believe either of those (AutoHotKey or RoboTask) would qualify, in my opinion. I use Easy Macro Recorder, although I do use AutoHotKey at times. GAOTD offers Easy Macro Recorder on occasion. I don’t know if they have a free version.

A flash drive that operates at rocket speeds

I recently purchased a Patriot Supersonic 32 GB USB 3.0 PEF32GSUSB Quad-Channel (not their highest speed). I have been getting very good speeds, and it has an aluminum housing. It was $50 online, although I just saw that the prices have come down. I also purchased an Anker USB 3.0 PCI Express Card with 2 Ports at Amazon for $10 so I could have USB 3.0 on my 2.0 system. I was skeptical that these adapter cards would work, but it seems to work just fine.

      Their highest speed claims:
8-Channel technology for fast read/write performance
      Up to 200MB/s read
      Up to 120MB/s write

The Keyboard Layout key with a value named “attributes” will also cause KB2686509 to fail. (I have that in there so that Shift will cancel Caps Lock.

Where in Vista do we remove that reference to the old drive?

I don’t know how it is in Vista, but in XP you might also want to remove the ‘ghost device’ remnant. Go to Device Manager > View tab > Show Hidden Devices, then expand your Disk Drives. The old HDD should be grayed out. Right click on it and choose Uninstall.

Be fine with me if the pdf format did not exist.

      Same here.
I was with FoxIt for a long, long time until they recently added the social networking crap, and now I’m using PDF-XChange Viewer. It seems to be just as good as FoxIt without all the bloat and nonsense.

    • in reply to: Can anyone identify this icon? #1301015

Why don’t you just look in TaskManager Processes to see if there’s anything you can’t identity?
If you find a likely one, kill it in TaskManager to confirm.
