unfortunately, the ‘free’ tag actually means I have to download other facilities onto my computer in order to get the ‘free’ version – something I’d rather not get into.

Can anyone recommend a suitable, genuinely free, bit of software that will un-zip files that have been compressed using WinZip (v12)?

I use WinZip and like it very much. If you have no long term need for a zipping utility , I’d download the 45 day trial. It’s free…for 45 days, and there’s no strings attached.

This is the same problem. It isn’t you, is it?

    • in reply to: Secure Laptop Used at Home and Work #1189321

They want to buy a new laptop and use it for work and at home, but keep the work applications/data completely separate and secure when using the home applications/data.

I think you’ll get a lot of opinions on this one, but what I would do is just keep all his business data on a seperate external drive. If it’s that important to him, he might even consider two seperate laptops. My wife does books for companies and that’s how she does it. They’re not even connected to the internet. That, obviously, wouldn’t be acceptable for personal use.

Just read the help files within the program. Step 1: Make sure your’re connected to the internet I can’t say that I remember seeing that anywhere on the site before I downloaded it…it might have been. After all, what good would the help file re downloadling be when it’s within the program yer trying to d/l!!!

In the future I’d be online while downloading and installing programs…especially from a trusted source. If I read this right, no doubt there were many files that you missed from not being online during the installation. I just installed it two days ago (online) and it only took me a few minutes…same with the update.

    • in reply to: Windows Registry Utilities? Any Good? #1189167

I just had to jump in here, guys.

I know everyone has their own preferences about using registry utilities. As you know, it’s one of the main components of Windows. If you don’t know it (can’t name all of its keys and their function), you don’t belong in it,(my opinion)wether you’re using 3rd party software or not. I know, the majority of people here are tech savy enough to get themselves out of most jams. Not necessarily true for all of the people viewing this board and taking our advice to heart.

I would suggest to anyone spending some time at the local book store browsing the selection of registry and registry editing books available(you probably won’t find many because it’s such a complex subject). Not only will you learn about what the registry is, how it works, and how Windows supplies what you need to keep it clean and healthy(the current debate here), but the risks and consequences associated with editing it (either way) without fully understanding what you’re doing. Spend some time with the books…I don’t think you’ll be sorry.

…and don’t forget the all important bus speed! Surprisingly, it’s overlooked by many “tech savy” people.

FWIW I never use copy/paste in the Explorer….I use RIGHT CLICK and DRAG

Great tip Don! I always used to get the Ctrl and Shift commands screwed up in this tired and damaged brain of mine. Now I don’t have to “think” anymore!

    • in reply to: AVG scans workbooks…Can I stop the scan? #1189042

many programs let you set different inclusions/exclusions for real-time vs. scheduled vs. manual scans.

I wasn’t aware of that…thanks. You learn something new every day…especially here!

    • in reply to: AVG scans workbooks…Can I stop the scan? #1189002

That’s correct. But, since Larry himself states

the risk seems limited. And as far as I can tell, this setting only applies to the resident scanner; it’s still possible to run a ‘manual’ scan on suspicious Excel files.

I’m a little confused here (refer to my sig lol). When you exclude a file from the scanner, I understood that to be a global setting, perhaps I’m wrong. If I’m not, the manual scan’s not going to check *.xls files.

Second, I’m not concerned about the risks with the workbooks he created on HIS computer, rather, the ones that he might d/l from the internet or receive via email attachment.

I’m curious about the various functions of the program because I’m considering purchasing a license. I’m trying MS Security Essentials at the moment. Comments on both programs would be appreciated…
