Another issue I come across from time to time is this: after an update (XP), Windows will give the familiar instruction to restart the machine. It will start to shutdown and remain in that state – sometimes forever. After 15 or 20 minutes a hard shutdown is required, but I am always left wondering if the machine will boot back up correctly. Shutting down this way is a last resort, but what is the alternative?
