As Joe said you won’t get anything from MS WU but there is a goldmine of Win9x related stuff at MGDx.

      stuck

not so fast. I’ve just recently setup a dual-boot XP/98se machine, booted into a clean win98se OS and have just visited the old V4 Windows Update [WU] site and have obtained a few win9x/ME updates.

so at least for me, WU does work under 98se/ME. try clearing your browsers cache, history & cookies and try the WU site again. it should “redirect” to the old V4 WU site and not the newer “V6” WU site which is for Win2k/XP.

    • in reply to: System Restore empty #1217590

This morning OE6 would not display anything in my Inbox claiming low disk space. (I have 254 GB of free space.) I tried to use System Restore but there were absolutely no restore points available. Where did they all disappear to? Eventually I restarted the PC and OE displayed everthing OK but there are still no restore points available in System Restore. What is going on?

could be too many files stored in the Documents and SettingsusernameLocal SettingsTemp folder [where “username” is the name of the XP login folder. Inspect that TEMP folder and delete as many files as you can, then try running OE6 again.

to check “System” Event Log, run eventvwr.exe to open the Event Viewer.
if nothing about System Restore appears on their event logs, try running msconfig then from the MSConfig dialog box, click on the button that says “Launch System Restore”, and create a restore point.

not sure why all those system restore points are gone.

    • in reply to: USB #1217206

Are you by chance using a external “Hub” to connect these drives to the computer?
If so they can and will cause issues as you stated.
Also with the use of sleep or hibernation can also put the devices to sleep and do not wake up.

NOT using multi partitions will not cause this issue.

better turn off the power management features for those external usb hard drives in Vista. or just disconnect them before putting your computer into either standby or hibernation mode.

    • in reply to: Can't run Disk Management after installing SATA #1217204

i don’t think XP’s disk management feature can handle your WD 2TB hard drive or greater, Dwayne (maybe a 1TB).
you may have to partition the drive with 3rd party disk utilities like Partition Magic instead.

MS will be ending support for XP SP2 and Vista SP 1 on July 13, 2010.

      not accurate, Doc Watson.

Microsoft ends support for WinXP SP2 on July 13, 2010 while support for Vista SP1 ends on July 12, 2011.

Read the following on Vista SP1 support:

    • in reply to: Change file attributes #1217202

Thanks noel, I downloaded Attibute Changer and it works on every folder – except the walkman! Any other thoughts anyone?

where’s the “walkman” folder located (full path, please)?
[ex. Documents and SettingsusernameMy Documents < that's a full path mentioned in Windows Explorer]
Make sure Windows Explorer displays the full path of the folders in the Explorer address bar. From the Folder Options control panel box, click on View tab and make sure "Display the full path in the address bar" option is checked. click OK to make changes.

also contact Romain Petges on the folder problem you are having with Attribute Changer.

    • in reply to: Sp-3 problem #1217200

      Glad this solved your problem.
I am surprised that you did not have more problems before this. Running two or more AV programs have lead to nothing but problems.

that is so true DaveA, especially outdated McAfee & Norton AVs that are not fully XP SP3 compatible. the 2009/2010 & higher editions of those AV apps should work under XP SP3 but it’s NEVER a good idea to be using both at the same time.

    • in reply to: XP Media Center SP3 install fails #1217198

I almost hate to suggest this but I think Jeff A is gonna have to reformat and reinstall XP Media Center SP2 on his computers as they’re maybe missing or corrupted system files (and some messed-up or missing registry entries) on there. then apply the full XP SP3 package.

would be nice if Jeff A told us what kind of computers he were using [name brand and models].

    • in reply to: MS support for Windows XP #1215957

According to MS, security update support for XP SP2 and Windows 2000 will end on July 13, 2010, and SP3 is good until 2014.

April 8, 2014 for XP SP3, Gerald. read here.

    • in reply to: Change file attributes #1215956

There’s a reason why I use NT4’s File Manager tool [winfile.exe] to change File attributes in WinXP. If you can’t do it in Windows Explorer, you can try it in File Manager.
You’ll have to extract it from NT’s big sp6i386.exe package. Then store a copy of winfile.exe into the windowssystem32 folder and run winfile.exe. click on View, All File Details. then click on View, By File Type, check the option Show Hidden/System Files. then click OK to save changes. locate the file you want, click on File and select Properties. now you should be able to change the File Attributes of that file.

Or better yet, install a copy of Attribute Changer, which can change any file attribute, including System files. Get it here:
      http://www.petges.lu/download/download.html
After that one is installed, open Windows Explorer, locate the file you want, right click the file and choose “Change Attributes”.

      good luck.

    • in reply to: XP Media Center SP3 install fails #1215952

I have XP Media Center SP 2.

XP Media Center Edition (MCE), what year? XP MCE 2004, XP MCE 2005? right-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and select Properties.

    • in reply to: Too many updates #1215944

check the following registry keys in Registry Editor (regedit.exe or regedt32.exe):

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstallKB975560
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftUpdatesWindows 2000SP5KB975560Filelist
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftupdatesDirectX 9.0SP0KB975560_DX9Filelist

The DirectX 9.0 registry key should be there if DirectX 9.0c under Win2000 is installed. If all those
registry keys are there and have all the necessary info, then there’s NO need to re-install the update.

Is Automatic Updates turned on? I’d keep it off and just install KB975560 manually from Windows Update.
If the firewall software is causing the problem what kind of firewall software do you use?

    • in reply to: Ridiculously large pagefile #1213100

Procedure for using a “static” or fixed-sized pagefile (you might want to read this Rich Martin):

Open Control Panel, go to System, click on Performance tab, and in the “Performance” section, click on its Settings button.
From the Performance Options dialog box, click on the Advanced tab, and in the “Virtual Memory” section, click on the Change button.
From the Virtual Memory dialog box, click on Custom Size and set BOTH the Initial Size (MB) and Maximum Size (MB) settings to 2Gb (2048). Then click the “Set” button to make the changes and then click OK to save the changes and you may need to restart the XP computer for the new pagefile settings to take effect.

I use a static pagefile size on my old XP machine so that Windows won’t need to waste time re-sizing the pagefile, saving performance losses.

    • in reply to: Last Tuesday's updates from Microsoft #1213097

install all security updates EXCEPT for KB977165. That one may cause BSODs problems on infected XP systems. Check your XP machines if they are clean, then decide whether or not to install the KB977165 patch.
