AskWoody LoungerThe Grand Rascal,
I have a friend that is in the business of setting up small businesses networks and some home systems and he has Windows XP Pro 32 bit and 64 bit on his systems at his home and downloaded MSSE and installed it wituout any problems. My system is Win7 64 on Dell Inspirons desktop and laptops all with MSSE installed with SuperAntiSpywareFREE, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Avast5 antivirus software with them all set to automatic updates, MSSE is a little erratic with automatic updates. Some times it works just fine updating every day then some times it may take a couple or three days to update or I tell it to update. Some of that seems to be maybe on the Microsoft end not having an update available. I have checked for some updates and it has just reported ‘None Available.”
I completely agree with Bob Primak if I may quote him here, “I had absolutely no installation issues with MSE, but this laptop came with Windows 7 64-bit pre-installed, and was not an upgrade.” I too have had the same experience with my system.
As I have told others, your comfort is up to you as to what if any protective software is used. All we can do is give you our experiences,

AskWoody LoungerCecil Britton,
You have NO idea how GREAT this feels to have this up and working as it is right out of the BOX. Only had to make some very important but I consider minor adjustments to be up and running. I have already been posting on their Forum with some suggestions for making it more user friendly especially for those of us, me mostly, that are slow learners and technology challenged, my Wife. Time will tell and there is a much larger story behind all of this and there is not the room nor is it appropriate for here.
If a repeat of a previous message can be used for my closing here then here it is,
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,

AskWoody LoungerNo it is from London. It sounds like you either got the wrong thing or forgot to install in the proper language. Go to : http://www.emclient.com/ and download from there and i will definitely come in USA English flavor.
Mr. C. Britton,
I have done it, wiff my wittle puter all by myseff. I have not used it yet as I have a friend on my phone line at this time and he usually talks for about an hour to maybe three hours. I do like the looks of this and some of the features look like they will help. This is primerally for my “Wife” and she is not easy to please. This is going to be a very large surprise for her as she HATES Pegasus Mail, I like it. But need to have the same as what she is using so I know what is happening when she has a problem.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,

Is this from China? If so how do you get it to install without knowing how to read Chinese? Do you know where you may get a copy that is in English and is usable?

AskWoody LoungerAs a novice, self taught not any formal training Dummy, the best advice I can get from all of this about the WinSXS folder and any other part of the O/S is, “just leave it alone and allow Windows to manage it for you.” I have been reading about that folder and what it is for or/er do for the system is not transferable or movable, leave it on C:Windows dir.
Now read this post, that if you do make any changes or moves then you had better know what you are doing and how to do it so you do not mess with your system. Because those posting here are smarter than the average bear, er, user of these systems you can do it and get away with setting it up for your self. As Ted Myers has asked about an article in his post #2 at the begining of this thread and takes you to Keith’s webpage and gives a warning about attempting any of these actions, link is at “this article“, for you to read and understand. I am not going into that here as it will take me too long to attempt to explain. Read Keith’s “WARNING” before attempting any of these operations discussed in this thread.
I am just attempting to pass on some info to protect anyone like myself from attempting any of these actions. I have read many threads in the Lounge even some that were on other websites that tell you this cannot be done without screwing your system into a BSOD hole. It may not happen immediately but you need to know what you are doing and HOW to do it correctly. What works for one may NOT work for any other.
Personally I was wanting to move some of these large or gigantic files or folders that are constantly increasing in size to another drive so Windows could have that room for growth. My friend that is much more knowledgeable about these systems than I started asking me what this is all about and why is the WinSXS folder growing so fast and has surpassed the original install of Windows, on his system, only after a few days of operations. We both started reading about it and have come to the conclusion “leave it alone” unless you know what you are doing and how to do it safely.
I am posting this for others to read that are a novice and do not fully understand what is going on with this folder and these NEW systems, Vista and Win7, mine is Win7 64bit. Do read Keith’s “WARNING” at ‘this article’ in the second paragraph of this post. He puts it very plain and to the point.
People that have been posting in this thread about moving or changing any part of these systems are very intelligent and knowledgeable users and I enjoy reading what others are doing to see if I can do it also, this is one point that is requiring much more knowledge than I have for these systems. Just want to advise any other that may not be as knowledgeable as these people are to BEWARE!!! and “BE-WARNED!!”
Thank you for reading my rambling post and for those of you that are SMARTER than the average bear and discussing how to do some of these things. Just think that warning should also be given.

AskWoody LoungerExcuse me, I am a late ‘bloomer’ on this subject, or maybe just a blooming idiot. I am just a self taught user and am my own Admin on my home network. I some times would find interesting software, to me anyway, and download and see what exactly it would do. Then let others know what was found and they then could do their own testing and if they like could acquire a copy. From what I have just learned, in the last couple of days any way, this is not a practice I will do any longer because of this WinSXS folder.
Could anyone enlighten me on why they use only ‘AMD64′ for most of the opening folders instead of just ’64’? What are the other opening or leading titles mean, like ‘WOW’, ‘msil'(?), and of course the ‘x86’ is obvious, 32bit. I still have more to investigate to see what all is stored in several other folders that are within here, that is due to my own curious nature.
Edited by NTxLS to add below:
Excuse me again, forgot about the folders that have a “_none_” entered within the title of the folder, what does that mean? There are almost half the folders on my Win7 64 system with that word in their title.
Thank you for reading my poster toasty,

AskWoody LoungerI totally agree. Thanks to all for your input. Notifications of replys are stopped.
As a novice or dummy may be a better explanation of myself. I totally agree with Ted Myers, ” . . most of what we are learning here make no difference . . ,” but; only with this part of his statement as quoted. It will make some changes for me as I will NOT do any more downloading and testing of any software that probably will be removed. I will only do that for software I feel would enhance my use of my computer and if anyone else wants to test any of that other software that I do not want on my system . . . they can do their own testing. I had been doing some testing to see what the software would do for others and then inform them what was found. With this Windows folder, as I call it, that keeps growing to keep my system working with forward updated as well as backward down-dated software is out the window. I am retired and cannot afford additional H/Ds to keep up with this growing folder. I will wait to see if the folder reduces naturally or maybe find someone or some thing that can assist in reducing that size.
This has been a very informative thread and feel more of the users of Vista (barf, hack, cough, gag) and Win7 should have this as required reading, not to educate them on how to use or clean this folder, but; to make them aware of what could happen if they continue the method of operations with earlier editions of Windows. Yes, I feel this is some what a good thing, but; MS should have a feature within this growing ‘nightmare’ to control it so we are not burdened with our systems LYING to us about how much disc space is available. MS should teach Explorer how to read the actual size of each file and record that for future reference.
Thank you for this very interesting discussion the contributors have provided, I have learned much,

AskWoody LoungerI receive an error ‘invalid win32 program’ when trying to install MSE on a 64 bit win7 OS I downloaded the 64bit install from Microsoft but the error says thre publisher is unknown
Jim,
As I had stated in my previous post above, I am not any sort of an Xpert, programmer, skip-kiddy, etc. just a very curious Home User. I had my system 32bit Vista SP1 updated to SP2 on a 64bit AMD Athlon dual core processor and downloaded MSSE for a 32bit O/S and it worked just fine. When it came available, purchased 64bit Home Premium Win7 and installed it myself. Re-downloaded MSE 64bit and installed same without any difficulty and it updates regularly. You 3rd Party AV software may be interfering with the install especially if it is monitoring all of your system in real time. Try disabling any real time monitoring software, like TeaTimer from Spybot Search & Destroy, and any other that you may have on your system. I really could not give any advice as to what to look into as you did not include anything about your system except Win 7 64 bit. This is just an attempt to HELP with little or no knowledge of your system. Excuse me if I miss-understood or given incorrect advice.

AskWoody LoungerNot really sure what is going on, but; when I was attempting to post that one just above with my NICK I got a short message that I needed to wait 10 sec. before posting. AskWoody LoungerHi there;
Good article and good comments too!
One tidbit that nobody seems to dwell upon is what seems to be best for Joe Average and Granny OhMiGod out there. In the ease of use department the combination of the default Windows firewall and MSE imho is unbeatable.
OH, my, may I chime in here and this is not just $00.02 worth of an opinion. I have used that ZA many years ago, Norton, McAfee, AntiVir, just to name a few, I now use Avast! and am waiting for them to make their pre-Windows Scan available for 64 bit like they have for 32bit, GMER was bought out by them and included it in their 32bit version. Along with that their software seems to be very user friendly because I am not technically oriented and if it gets too GEEKY I get lost. And I also run MSE along with Avast! and also use the Win7 Firewall as it is the easiest for me to setup and use. NOTHING to tweak for my use anyway.
Also each individual’s comfort is what will really drive what they use and as others have put it, just to let another know what I am using is all that this is for. One last point, I am a home user, not Joe but don, and Granny OhMiGOD is really MeMa, my Wife and we both get along just fine.
Thank you for reading my poster roasted,

AskWoody LoungerI was replying to this forum just awhile ago and suddenly my browser, FF v3.6.3, just closed and my message has been lost. My system is Win7 64bit on a laptop, having issues with this as the keyboard is flat and the keys are just straight across. With my big hands and fingers some times I hit more than one key at a time, maybe 3 or 4 and the touch mouse that is here is in my way when typing. I prefer the ergo keyboard and plan on moving back to that and getting rid of this flat system.
As for the E-Mail clients Pegasus Mail is the one for me, Eudora was my Wife’s preference and I find it not very friendly to me or maybe it is the other way around. Thunderbird v3.0.4 that I have on my system now will not download my e-mail as they keep changing my e-mail server to one that is not mine. Plus I need to get with my AV software, Alwil’s Avast! to see what they can do about my e-mail SSL that they say their AV will do the SSL validation for me and not set it in my client, WRONG, after two days of not being able to download my mail I changed my AV from doing my SSL for my e-mail to my client and my e-mail is working again.
Enough with my problems for now will get back L8R, on to Avast! for this new problem,

AskWoody LoungerOn the recommendation by Fred Langa, I downloaded and installed MS SE.
At the conclusion of the installation, an error message informed me that MS SE “couldn’t detect an Internet connection.”
I uninstalled it, and tried again the following day. Same result.
Given that I am pretty much online all the time, it worries me a lot when a product intended to protect me from internet threats can’t even determine whether I am online or not.
It worries me even more because Microsoft designed the operating system that I use and that allows me to connect to the internet in the first place.
It would be *very* hard for me to trust this product. I uninstalled it and went back to the old ways of protecting myself.
‘mmcgown’,
If I may add some info for you to make another attempt, if you really want to see if it works. I had Windows Vista SP1 32bit O/S on my system when purchased, not going into full detail as to the problems I had, just after the SP2 came out for Vista 32bit I downloaded and installed MSSE and installed it. As the expression goes, ‘right out of the box’ it updated itself and did a scan of my system. From that day forward and after changing my O/S from Vista SP2 32bit I installed Win7 64bit, as my system is a dual core 64 bit processor. I made the change over to Win7 myself, not any sort of IT or programmer just a very curious Home User. Now to make a long message as short as possible, Microsoft Security Essentials has run with out any problems and has found many suspicious files on my system, Win7, and they were from when I was trying to learn Vista (barf, gag, hack, et ceteras) and nothing was lost because those files were removed.
Now to my suggestion, check your firewall settings for MSSE having access to the web so it may update the database, as it works just fine, or you just do not want to allow it to do the job it was designed to perform.

AskWoody LoungerI am not a Windows 7 user. However, I have comments that may be significant.
Testing the reliability of a firewall or sotware to protect against malware cannot be complete without exposing the system to known attacks. Experienced users might have formed habits that, in and of themselves, provide protection by avoiding traveling to places where they might be vulnerable. Fred, you said you operated in public places, and all that, but if you said you intentionally exposed your system to known threats, I missed it. I am told there are trillions (I have conditional permission from the White House to use that word) of malware threats lurking on the Internet. The means of attacking is varied. Allowing one or two malware attacks to see if your protection fends them off seems to me to be a very incomplete test.
Is it advisable to put all your eggs in one basket, so to speak? If protection software writers have any kind of a mindset at all, they may disregard attacks that behave in certain, maybe obscure, ways. Not to be a detractor of Microsoft, but is it probable that, even the giant, might concentrate on some types of attacks, leaving a system vulnerable to others. Would it be better to use a less integrated set of protection, from different companies, to maybe get a broader range of protection?
“Uncle Time,”
If I may chime in on this? IMHO you are probably correct from your point of view and in the view of those that are IT specialists because you are more concerned in several computers or maybe many, depending on the size of the company and many users of different skills, you are correct. I am speaking from the point of view of a Home user and an Analyst/Toubleshooter with only one or two systems. If you have a third party software that needs to scan your system it is OUTSIDE of the O/S and has a need to infiltrate it to do it’s job. If you have one that is native, or part of the O/S and is embedded well within the O/S then it already has some abilities that are built-in and already has much of the information about the system that is already a part of it’s operation. Less time required to do the job and can cover it better.
Maybe I am assuming too much, but; to me this scenario would fit my needs well enough without the need of additional software which would make my system lighter and run more to my likings.
Of course opinions are like exhaust pipes every car has one and they all stink,

AskWoody LoungerNice article, thanks.
I too have been getting by quite nicely with the MSE package and the default Windows 7 firewall over the past 4 to 6 months. I have not changed my computing or browsing habits much and have yet encountered any significant infection, despite continued use of internet Explorer over Firefox as my primary browser. Microsoft has done a fine job in this regard in it’s free offering of a capable security package for it’s latest os.
I still believe that personal and system security will always rely more on the end users behaviors than that of any software solutions that any company could offer.“Clint Rossmere,”
I completely agree with your last sentence and feel that is the truest statement I have ever read. Especially regarding our own individual security. It is primarily up to the one using the internet. To feel safer has been made possible by Microsoft stepping up to the plate and hitting what we need for a change. That is to give us more confidence in our own usage of the net.

AskWoody LoungerI attempted to access the online scanners, but to no avail. All require use of IE, which I use only when absolutely necessary. From Firefox I used IE View Lite, only to come up against a brick wall.
Fred–have you sold out to Microsoft??? Please say it ain’t so!!! Are there any online scanners that work with Firefox???
“hammond mike’
For what it may be worth, I went into TrendMicro’s site and did a House Call scan of my system. My system is Win7 64bit and using FFv3.6.3, there is a choice for 32bit or 64bit so enjoy.
