    • in reply to: What ‘Shellshock’ means to you and me #1469755

What I DON’T understand is, aren’t ALL shells capable of executing a remote shell? Many years ago, we used CSH when the system was delivered and would rlogin to another device to check on the progress of a program. We used ZSH for build menus and BASH for other menus. BSH was preferred for simpler syntax on some loops. And for anything lethal, you had to SU with a password. Aren’t the capabilities of any shell are controlled by the passwd file (which could only be updated with the root password)?

Interesting article. It’s nice to see I’m not the only one reluctant to move on (although my primary machine has Win 7).

My biggest worry is what is compatible with my machines. I have a collection (6) of laptops and desktops that have sort of been retired because of speed and XP. I’d like to put them to use, like a receiver of streaming music to feed into my tuner or an electronic cookbook in the kitchen. Simple tasks for old hardware. But will Win 7Pro or Home not work, or Linux flavor A, B or C run, or not. I don’t want to spend all of my spare time fussing with it. I’m fairly technically savvy, but I don’t know what I don’t know. Is there a tiny app that can say “Your hardware should be able to run this, this and this. It cannot run this, this and this because of hardware limitations.” No 500-page dissertation, just a short paragraph or so pointing me away from unworkable upgrades.

    • If he uses the normal backup procedure as part of Quicken, copy the backup file to the new machine and “import it” into the new installation of Quicken. I’ve done this when I was traveling for a few months and wanted my “active” file on my laptop. (I actually updated Quicken to Deluxe V 13. It puts a copy of your file “in the cloud” and is accessible from all of your devices, according to the literature. I check my balances from my Droid, which reads the cloud file. That takes a lot of the work out of it.)

    • in reply to: Moving printed newsletter to website #1390276

I replaced our animal rescue newsletter with an HTML version, http://www.cattalesinc.org/Library/CTINewsletter201303.html. There are two things that make it possible. Adobe Dreamweaver does a nice job sustaining the mark-up needed for an HTML e-mail (You put the codes on every line to be compatible with every e-mail app) and PHPList, the mail delivery program. I “write” the newsletter in Dreamweaver as a web page, then paste the code into PHPList. The e-mail addresses of the recipients are maintained in PHPList (and they can sign-upon their own). I upload the HTML page, while sending it out a copy to everyone. Setting up the initial template can be a pain, but you can copy/paste text into the template fairly easily. I am aware that the letter I compose and layout in Dreamweaver looks slightly different in different mail applications, so you can’t get too fussy about layout. It turns into one of those things that it “will sorta look like this when they read it.” Good luck.

Many thanks for the idea on the converter card! I bought two and it worked well. I can also now use my Eye-Fi card with my Canon 20D.

There have been the occasional REAL registrations, so it makes it easier for the legit users. I didn’t know if just deleting the obvious ones would cause other problems.

I’ve stayed up-to-date with the WP releases, so if they’ve released a patch for it, it’s likely I’m using it.
