Thanks for the tips guys. Would you believe this morning is the first it hasn’t popped up. Coincidence that it is 1 week’s worth of logins since I installed SP2?

Rebel – I have the same setup so if it pops back I’ll try your disabling via each user as first option thanks.

Leif – the reference you gave had a method I will use as second option – if only because it is a bit technical for me 8-))

Nice to know I wasn’t alone.

    • Thanks for the pop-up blocker tip Joe. I had the same problem as Peter re just two very common sites viz. http://www.whitepages.com.au and http://www.yellowpages.com.au

I tried holding down the CTRL key while selecting the site but that instance of IE6 dies away as usual (another instance remained open).

Checked IE6 security settings but couldn’t detect anything untoward – not surprising as all other sites I access are OK.

So turned off Tweak-XP pop up blocker and voila!.

Must be the way the site is set up as Tweak-XP pop-up blocker says it will scane new instances of IE for known pop-up phrases or servers and if found, immediately close that instance of IE.

I did look through the Tweak-XP list of such phrases/servers but couldn’t see anything that obviously related to white or yellow pages. So I guess I’ll have to put up with pop-ups.

      Thanks, Ken Australia

cheers Thanks for the responses people. Resolved the problem – sort of. Taking more notice of when there was a lack of status bar, I noticed it reliably occurred when I created a new window instance (File | New | Window). Went to report it as a bug and saw a link to the MS Knowledgebase. Sure enough there it is as:
330216 – Status Bar Is Not Displayed When You Open a New Browser Window
-a known bug in IE6. I really must remember to check out the knowledgebase first in future.

Thanks Alan and Deb. Those products look promising but alas appear to be only for UNIX platforms. I will keep searching as you suggest as I am sure there must be WIN products too.

    • in reply to: Office 2000 Compatability (XP) #672571

I upgraded from WIN98 to WINXP Pro without doing a clean install. Office 2000 was amongst the softwares that carried through the upgrade. The only real problem I have is that my other user cannot access Office 2000. e.g. when she executes WORD 2000, this message shows “Office Applications must be installed to run. Run Setup from the location originally installed”.

Office is installed and I use it OK in my account. During the upgrade I did not deny the other user access to any programs – she appears to be able to use every program (including Outlook Express) except Office 2000 programs.

I don’t really understand the second sentence in the message. After pressing OK to the message I did supply my Office 2000 SR1 CD which it didn’t like so then put in the Office 2000 disk which it rejected because it couldn’t find an update package.

I’m sure there is some way I can turn it on for my second user before she beats the hell out of me. Can you help please?

      Thanks Jan, however,
Zipping is not an option as many of our members wouldn’t know what to do with a zipped file. All they want to do is view the results on the screen.

I had selected a range but size still too large for my liking. Thanks anyway.

Thanks jscher2000. That second item seems to have enabled me to switch off speech recognition and other test services.

    • in reply to: Is this a virus? (XP) #634025

Thanks Dave and MJP. I have the symptoms described (words being inserted slowly into a WORD document – but I do not have a wireless keyboard as did the originator of the problem). I agree the cause/solution per Dave’s response. But, I don’t know where to find the language toolbar that the MS article refers to (and I don’t have a Windows key on my keyboard). I did check running processes, killed one named Shared Speech and that stopped the insertions but of course they will resurface next time I start WORD.

Apart from turning off the microphone I also want to turn off the speech recognition function. I am running XP on my laptop with OFFICE XP.

A few weeks ago my big fingfers and thumbs hit a key combo that caused the speech recognition module to surface. Now each time I start WORD, I get a speech recognition floating window that I have to cancel and then OK the subsequent warning window. I cannot fins any useful reference in Help as to how to stop the process activating with WORD.

Will very much appreciate help on both these issues.
