I was very interested in this part of your post:
<Customize dialog (btw you can access this dialog either via Format>Style>Modify etc. OR via Format>Bullets and Numbering – when it comes to outline numbered styles, these two dialogs are linked).>>
Our firm was told by (?experts?) more than 3-4 years ago when we switched to Word that this was a bad thing to do – and never link the B&N through format, style. shrug So you learn something new every day – thanks for this information. thumbup

I just did a search for temp files and found 52! blush plus a lot of folders named, for example, “Pro3336h.tmp” and some folders related to NAV. The folders are located at “C:Program FilesCommon FilesSymantec SharedVirus Defs”. I’ve never noticed these folders before. 3 of these folders are dated 1998, several from March and April of this year. Is it ok to delete them?

I have Norton AV Auto Protect enabled. Would that do it?
It took 4 reboots to get IE to open. When I did get in I downloaded and installed IE5.5 Service Pack 1 & Internet Tools just in case it might help. Well it didn’t. I have been trying to answer posts for the last 1 1/2 hrs. I ran scandisk – no errors. Ran sfc, will do defrag shortly after deleting all ~.tmp files. Now if I can get this posted before dying again … sigh

    • in reply to: Rats!!! #523196

Two days ago ran de-frag & try to remember to do so on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. I delete my tmp files fairly regularly (thanks to a response to a post by Phil Rabichow a month or so? ago). But what does ‘real-time virus scan’ mean??

    • in reply to: Rats!!! #523179

A search for previous posts with this issue produced no joy. Using Win98 (2nd ed) v. 5.0 (2919.6307co – whatever that means!) Disabled screen saver, background wallpaper and all scheduled events save NAV update set to run middle of night each Tuesday night. Lately I’ve been getting lots of “This program has performed an illegal operation…” messages (not a new msg but more frequent of late) and often have to restart in order to get to my destination.
Is this an Iexplore issue or Windows 98? M/be problem stems from another source? (MS office I know a bit about but Windows/Iexplore info might fit on the head of a pin!) Anyone have similar issues with this ‘illegal operation message in Iexpore? Often have to reboot 2+ times per session in order to check mail or go to Woody’s, etc.
I’ve been told my pc is getting a little ‘long in the tooth’ (like its operator laugh). I bought this misbegotten clone in mid-1997 & have been told parts of the pc were from 1995-6 and it’s been suggested I dump this OS in the toilet and ‘get with the new stuff’. nope because: I have at least 1.38 gigs free space left on C: more on E & D drives; am not running programs that require mega space/mem; just my e-mail (3 accounts), some on-line stuff like looking at news headlines etc so I don’t think this is necessary but would welcome comments/suggestions.
      TIA,
      Paddy

    • in reply to: Problem With RTF File Loading #522202

I know ” questions, questions” while you want answers but:
Where did the document come from? Sent to you via e-mail? Why did you need to save it with “.rtf” extension”? Was it a CompareRite document or DeltaView Comparison saved with the .rtf extension? thinks

It’s been a while since I’ve been involved with HTML markup but the following sites were helpful to moi (apologies in advance if the following is too elementary for you. I used the trial and error method & I found these sites (&and many others I visited!)) to be very helpful.

      Thanks, Andrew! smile Appreciate it.

    • in reply to: Junk Mail #521660

newUpdate! Tried out excite.com suggested by a WOPR Lounger a while back. Appreciate his/her suggestion but I have to tell you that it is no better than my usual ISP or MSN Hotmail. I guess people are paid to troll various sites to suck out e-mail addresses for their potential ‘sucker’ e-mail lists. Guess I’ll just continue to add to my junk mail address/Outlook Rules Wizard and hope for the best. Cheers

    • in reply to: Problem in a table #521455

Hi Chris – I agree. On my home pc I had copied & saved the doc with a .wpd extension & when I clicked on it in Explorer Excel opened (re my earlier post wondering if it might have previously been an Excel doc).
Today I finally had an opportunity to open it in Word2000. It does look as if the trouble is in the first row. I found the same things that Geoff, jscher and Rajesh did. It also went into endless pagination!! I tried a variety of things just because I like to know why docs behave in a sometimes bizarre fashion.
In Word2000 text after the “square hollow boxes” appeared to be footer (or header?) text. I tried highlighting the boxes and clicking on them & got message re Unicode font stuff. (Sorry about the ambiguity here but I don’t have Word2000 at home & was really busy at office today to do scrn shots or make notes).
I opened it as a text only file and found lots of column breaks. Then I copied the original file, made mock changes, ran CompareRite (sometimes this is a good diagostic tool) & got a message along the lines of ‘Changes may be lost in saving as Word 6.0/95 document. Huh? crazyWeird and weirder. Oh well, unless Geoff W finds out some other info I guess it’s just another corrupt document. As Phil noted doesn’t seem to be any indication of how it got there.
I don’t like it when I can’t find the answers! mad

      Hi Gary
First, Re: “P_ …if I may call you that”: Not a friendly signature for sure so try “Paddy” as a handle. [It’s been on my list of “to do’s” to change my sig on WOPR but I’ve been soooooo busy it is dropped to the bottom of my “to do’s”. Also want to add in Drk Realms flag for a “Fractured Canadian” flag].
Back to the problem table: Are there links back to another doc(s)?
Hope I’ll have time later today to look at the file & check this out further. I love Word challenges but suspect the great brains on this board will come up with the answer before I get a chance to do any detective work. If not, I’ll be back!

      Hi Geoff:
I have a suspicion it may originally have been an Excel worksheet. Is it possible that Mary C. gave you what used to be an Excel document? i.e. someone decided they would rather work in Word and did SA Word doc?
      Paddy

    • in reply to: Problem in a table #520888

      Hmm. This is different! thinks
Long shot, but before opening the document try turning off background pagination. In Word97 it’s found under Tools, Options, General. I’ve saved your attachment to disk to open at another pc. I came across similar behavior only once before and that was because there was a macro that acted as a never ending “loop”. Did you have a chance to check out any macro/calculation/formulae before it starting doing the loop-de-loop?
