    • in reply to: Windows logon password #1780389

Hi Keith! The logon window I was getting on boot-up was always set for windows and I had never had a password to log on to Windows.
I was about to post back and say thanks but I’ve been there and tried out Ken’s suggestion, but still no dice. Then I decided to check Control Panel, Passwords. I’d been there before but never when further than the first tab figuring – “ok, I’ve never even had a password so I’m in the wrong place.
This time I checked out tab 3 -“User Profiles”. I checked the box for “all users of this computer have the same preference and desktop settings.” When prompted, I said, yes, restart comptuer. I had to reset some of the isp settings but then – MAGIC happened – no *#&@! signon window. Who knew!!? Not the ‘hardware specific’ type forums I posted to many times over the last couple of years, and not the tech I paid $$$ to and not my techy type friends. So! For whatever reason, this time something clicked and I don’t have any green beer to offer you so C

    • in reply to: Endnotes placement #519160

Are you using Word97 or Word2000? Do you have any landscaped pages? I do know that the section page break bug can cause the endnote placement to screw up. Have you tried a search at Microsoft’s Knowledge Base? I’m dashing off to work (& running out of time) else I’d provide the links. Hopefully one of the Word experts out there will have a quicker answer!
      Good luck & later …

You will need to indicate where the endnotes are to be placed, so after choosing “endnote” click on options and then placement, Endnotes, Options, Place At & choose “at end of section”.

    • in reply to: Junk Mail #518920

Thanks for the info. My Outlook Junk Mail list now numbers 78 rules. I’m finding that Hotmail does do a better job of trashing spam and Outlook trashes e-mail legit mail I want so I’ve just signed up with excite.com and will give that a try to see if it’s any better.

    • in reply to: Windows logon password #1780006

I did a search for logon password and found this thread. I’ve had the same problem from Sept ’98 when I had added more gig and partitioned the hd. I tried all the steps outlined here (very helpful, tx). But I still have the Windows login password problem. I also went into CMOS and deleted the password. I’ve never set a password – the only password I’ve every had is one I use in dialing up my isp. BTW I did a search for *.pwl – not found. No such animal.
It’s not that big a deal

Thanks, Charles for that link to your Word Web Resources site – some good info there!

Here’s one source to recover docs where password has been forgotten

    • in reply to: Outline Numbering #1779065

Thanks – I remember using that pre-CompareRite macro and it was great for those users who were more “comptuer savvy” so to speak but trying to explain it to anyone outside of the help desk or support area was a real problem. So were were very happy to see the Workshare (DeltaView) people arrive on the scene. Nice to “talk” again! I’ve kept several of your responses from the old lounge and they have come in handy over the years. Cheers!

Hi WW: I noticed that Gary F has started a new thread re CompareRite vs. Track Changes vs. DeltaView. I’m going to check it out shortly & I know you’ll find some good stuff there. It was either Grail or Gary F. who first alerted me to DeltaView (at the old Lounge) and it was one of the best tips I’ve garnered from this Lounge. We are now using DeltaView & I think it’s great (if a little on the pricey side). It will provide blacklined docs for us when CompareRite fails.
Re Track Changes: again, see the new thread, but basically a lot of information can be “leaked” if “accept or reject all changes” has not been done. Code was provided by Allan Bach (again at the old Lounge) which will alert the user to turn off/accept track changes. I still have that & can post it if Allan is no longer a visitor here. However there is a lot of metadata that can be grabbed from a Word doc we don’t like to add to that by using Track Changes. Bob Blacksberg in the “Word of Law” section of one of Woody’s newsletters referred to software that “Scrubbed Documents Clean” to get rid of metadata.
If it’s important for you to see the problems created with using hidden text and blackling, I’ll see if I can find some of the old documents we created using the templates with hidden text, do a blackline and post part of it to show you the problems created. I have not tried to use DeltaView on the docs. & will do so (if I locate the docs) and let you know the result.
I’ve also encountered numbering problems using Track Changes so that you need to “clean up” the tracked copy before printing/sending to client.
I don’t very often post but I do visit and follow threads of interest to me. So since I’m on a roll here, I just want to say that this Forum has provided me with a wealth of information over the years. Hat’s off to Woody and Eileen for creating the new site!!)

Hello, Gary – It’s been a while since we ‘talked’! When we switched to Microsoft Office/Word97 back in … hmmm m/be 97? we had templates that went through a set of [VBA] routines that performed all tasks for the user – i.e. eliminating all the work of cleaning up TofC, by using the hidden paragraph mark technique. The templates were fabulous! And within these templates we were able to have headings 2 & 3 appear in the ToC and the hidden text paragraph mark excluded the text following the heading. Great!
      And then

Oops! It’s Friday, TG. You’re right it’s NOT an url. But if you go to the MS KB and Search for that article it’ll pop up.

I use shortcut keys as much as possible to avoid any more damage to my wrists. However, I use Microsoft’s Intellipoint at home and like it best. At work I occasionally switch mice

    • in reply to: A Canadian can’t get a date #514554

This would certainly be making me crazy! I’m throwing out the following just in case it may be useful:
Just curious: You mentioned you have created a style for date. Just wonder why you decided to create a style. If you use Alt+Shift+D it inserts the date of your choice (Click on Insert, Date, then choose the format you like before doing Alt+Shift+D – and while you’re there, you can set it as a default if you wish: i.e. Tuesday, February 13, 2001, etc.)
Another thought: Are you, by any chance, using Insert, Field to get your date? That can be rather problematic if the correct switches are not used.
In the meantime, if you ARE using insert field, try out the Insert Date routine mentioned above.
Whether I use Australian, US or Canadian English they all work

Hello Gary: I’m not sophisticated enough to know exactly how to copy both you and Phil R. at the same time – you know – still trying to get used to this new Board and figure out how do to attachments, graphics, etc.
And I realize I’m off topic but wanted to say well-deserved on your elevated status! (Both of you – take a bow!)You have both been, and continue to be, a great help to me and I’m sure, many others.
      Cheers

Hello Phil! I realize I’m off topic but wanted to say well-deserved on your MVP! I’m also copying this to Gary F. You have both been (and continue to be) a great help to me and I’m sure, many others.
      Cheers
I’m trying to get familiar with this new setup but so far looks pretty good.
