      Thanks, CLiNT

The eWallet software started running (lots of instances – no doubt all my attempts…) It’s now installed. I had to reboot before it would sync, but it now appears to be working.

Firefox still isn’t going. I used SxsTrace to see what was happening – the output file is attached. Oddly, this time a dialog box popped up saying “The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.”

It seems to be working sensibly today. I can’t work out why it was so slow before…

    • in reply to: iTunes in Windows 8 #1371077

Many thanks for all of the helpful tips. I have now succeeded in getting iTunes up and running. In case anybody else has similar problems, this is what I did (although how much of it made a difference I’m not certain).

The new Windows 8 laptop didn’t seem to like downloading the installation file. It did so more slowly than an older, slower Windows 7 laptop on the same wifi connection; and when I’d done so it wouldn’t run. There appear to be various sources of the installation software – the 64 bit installation file on the UK version seems to be an older, lower-numbered one than the one on the US web site. I’m afraid I didn’t make a note of the file number.

In the end, I got it to work by downloading this file on the older laptop, and then copying it across the home network onto the Windows 8 one. By this time I’d upgraded to Windows 8 Pro, and was logged in as an administrator.

Having installed iTunes I then copied the contents of the MusiciTunes folder from the old laptop to the new one, and ran the “search for music files” option in iTunes. All the podcasts were convered to “unplayed”, but apart from that it all worked – as far as I can tell so far.

I then tried to log in as me, and connect to the store – to check that I could. I started to have more problems. I didn’t get an error message, but the connection never completed. A reboot didn’t help. Looking at the Apple support forums I found links to their “can’t connect to the iTunes store” pages http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1368 .

I added the sites listed at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297 as safe sites in internet explorer.

I tried disabling the firewall – no difference.#

I checked Norton – there seemed to be an upgrade for Norton 360, which I downloaded and may have run (I wasn’t clear if it actually ran or not). Another page on the Norton forums (not http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Can-t-connect-to-iTunes-Store/m-p/259605/highlight/true#M34804 but a similar one – suggested running a full Norton scan. That was odd. Norton didn’t seem to be able to complete the first stage, updating its virus libraries, and eventually said it had no internet connection – pretty much the same thing that iTunes was claiming. Chrome and IE, however, could connect to pages. All very odd.

So I re-booted the computer – and when it had restarted, I could connect to iTunes.

In retrospect I wonder if simply rebooting after installing iTunes would have done the trick.

This is working -but it is taking a ridiculously long time to sync. Right now it reports “68 files, 97.9kB/sec, 27 hr left”.

Nope. It still doesn’t work – same message, despite now running Windows 8 Pro.

    • in reply to: Windows 8 and DropBox #1370688

I’ve copied the installation file from the windows 7 laptop to the new windows 8 (now Pro) laptop, and it ran and installed. Hurray! Sorted.

Thank you. I’ve upgraded to Windows 8 Pro, and will try this now…

    • in reply to: Windows 8 and DropBox #1370678

A standard laptop. I’ve just upgraded it to Windows 8 Pro.

I’ve been unable to download the DropBox installation file; and so I tried to download the Firefox one, thinking it might be a problem with IE and Chrome – but I can’t download or complete the firefox installation either.

To check that it isn’t a problem with the wifi I used a different laptop running Windows 7 and downloaded the DropBox installation file without any problems there.

I also tried disabling the (Norton 360) Firewall – no difference.

For whatever reason it is now working again. Perhaps, when I thought I’d closed it down, there was still an outlook window open that I’ missed.

Many thanks for all the help – it’s SUCH a useful thing!

      Peter.

Thanks – I’m using Outlook 2003 SP2. There doesn’t appear to be a “none” option.

      Thanks, John.

I hadn’t deleted the forms. Thanks for the pointer.

I’ve now reinstalled, but still get the message “The macros in this project are disabled. Please refer to the online help or documentation of the host application to determine how to enable macros. [OK] help” when I try to run the macro.

Macro security is set to “low”.

      Peter.

I have been using the macro version of this for some time, but it’s been broken recently. When I try to reinstall from scratch it tells me it can’t import to the module because the names are already in use (despite my having deleted the earlier module and created a new one.)

But that probably isn’t the problem – when I try to run the macro, it tells me that macros are disabled, and nothing I do seems to be able to re-enable them…

Brilliant – that worked! Thank you so much. (Intuitive, isn’t it!).

Thanks for the suggesion – no, it remains a mystery. (Sorry not to have replied sooner – I tried, but the board was busy or something.)
