      This may be the answer:
Effective April 17, 2017, we’ll no longer provide verizon.net email service. Other than this change, your Verizon service(s) won’t be affected.

We have two options for you to consider. Please review both options and take action today to avoid losing access to your email.
      1) Send everything to AOL and keep your existing email address, your emails, and your address book.
      2) Just go away and start over.

      Thank You, MDB:

Yes, I use Firefox. And yes, now that you mention it I recall that FireFox stalled on startup the other day and that it was looking for Mobile Phone number info.

No, I use a unique password for WS, but I DO use the same USER NAME on quite a few hobbiest forums (I don’t do any social media).

Yes, the back button indicates a lack of security.
      ——————-
Do you or anyone have any clues as to why my outgoing Verizon emails (logged in to Verizon through Firefox) are from vznitxxxxxx.mailsrvcs.net as the sender rather than me? If I got an email from THAT header, I would just delete it. I sent an email to myself and when it came back, it was FROM: vznitxxxxxx.mailsrvcs.net. When I opened the email, it said it was from me as previously.

BTW, I use Malwarebytes and Kaspersky and update the database daily and nothing appears there.

I have noticed INTRUSIVE messages from MS that Edge IS MORE SECURE than FireFox and a “hook” to click to switch !!! Not that I am harboring any conspiracy theories.

I had not seen that WS insecurity posting. Thank you for that.

    • in reply to: File History not backing up some folders #1586889

I have been experiencing the same problem.
I don’t know if I can help because I have a simpler arrangement with only one external drive dedicated to File History and one C: drive.

Every day I have at least two Event ID’s #104, with a rare INFO Event ID #105 = “a file was posted to File History”. But the huge number of un-posted files is concerning.

Also, although the following sample Event #104 refers to C:UsersPaulSkyDrive ,,, my folder has no SkyDrive folder;…but two OneDrive folders, one is a current date and has a GREEN checkmark and the other is dated July, no checkmark and is empty. [btw – can I just delete the July folder?]

The below referenced file which starts as .849C9543…. is not found in search, unless I use a file finder program called “Everything”.

Finally, I no longer use MS Cloud storage. The “acorn icon” in the lower right corner box says “OneDrive is up to date.

More info: I periodically make a file-by-file copy of Documents and an Image File using Macrium Reflect (Free), although I’ve never restored an image. My Dell PC is an Intel i7, 8GB, Nvidia, Win8 to Win8.1 64bit to Win10 (by MS update) and is now the latest AU 1607 build 14393.576 (on auto MS update).

    • in reply to: Big Switch fixed W10 ! #1574692

How long did it work? ANSWER: Two days and then the problems returned. RESTART fixes the connection problems and here is a simple way to painlessly use RESTART.

Turn off FAST STARTUP and get a faster shutdown and startup.

I discovered that shutdowns are now quicker (10 seconds) and my startups now only take 30 seconds!.
And if you uncheck Fast Startup, you get a cold boot that connects the modem, the network, the internet and accordingly fixes connections for Edge, Store, Search, Internet Explorer and Outlook.com and the online Help files also work.

Note: During the update to Win10 I all but one of the privacy switch settings was set to OFF.

And I am getting MS UPDATES, for better or worse.
But, I am not syncing to the MS OneDrive Cloud because I have not chosen to sync.

By avoiding Fast Startup, I think you avoid creating a complete hyberfil monster file when shutting down and that saves some time. When you startup, you are effectively doing a RESTART (aka cold boot).

This may not apply to every PC, but this may fix some balky problems until MS figures out why the Fast Startup is not faster (maybe due to the system trying to negotiate internal errors which eventually resolve to starting up, but with many broken apps.

    • in reply to: Big Switch fixed W10 ! #1573930

      Update:
After two days, W10 reverted to its prior non-apps behavior.
One clue was apps being “unable to make a connection”.
Langlist had an article about SLEEPING devices.
I used StartDevice Manager and found the Network Adapter, then the modem.
      Selected “Properties”.
      then Power Management
Unchecked: allow the pc to control the device to save energy
      Selected “Restart”.
This time I decided not to use a “Big Switch” forced Shutdown, about which some have experienced other problems.
Form JoelP517’s post I learned about W10’s hibernation aka “shut down” mode. When I looked up the difference between
      1) Restart = a cold boot
      2) Shut Down/Fast Start = a form of hibernation
I wanted a cold boot / system refresh so I figured that Restart was better than Big Switch.

      IT WORKED.

Now, how long will it last this time? Was it the sleeping modem or the restart that fixed the problem?

Note: In my research I came across similar issues having to do with User Accounts and suggestions to create a new User Account, which might have the same effect of “starting over”.

    • Thank you for your suggestion.
      But, it did not work.

      Thanks Rick
I followed your excellent instructions and this is the System response:
      Update KB3139907 NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM 4/27/2016
Security Update KB3140768 NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM 4/27/2016
      Update KB3142588 NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM 4/27/2016
      Update KB3173428 NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM 7/28/2016
Security Update KB3174060 NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM 7/28/2016
Security Update KB3172985 NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM 7/28/2016

7/28/16 is the day I updated to Win10.

Rick, since our systems agree that there are no updates since 7/28/16, I have to conclude that the
BIG SWITCH (aka Forced Shutdown) technique did something to fix the problems I listed without using a “transparent update”.

Now that we have that update hypothesis out of the way, does anyone have any other ideas why the Big Switch would provide such a dramatic improvement to an otherwise deficient W10 upgrade?

If it was a pending update, but when I looked for updates, none have occurred since July 28, the day I updated to W10 and none are pending now. I guess there could be secret or “hidden updates”. That would be troubling for those who diagnose Windows issues.

    • in reply to: Win10 f-o-r-c-e-d, WARNING of MS “trick”! #1561779

Thank you. I will try either The ‘notify and let me choose’ or ‘download but notify’ option.
I found the windows log and from the notes listed there, the “MS Win10 attack robot” continue to be trying to do something and has scheduled a date to try again!

Re: Dell NVidia drivers. My Dell is 2 years old. I have an extended DELL service contract. From my invoice I know the video card model number and so far, no driver is available. I use a CAD software program, a video editing program and photo editing programs, all of which rely on a high performance video card – which is my NVidia. If Win10 forces an update, I’m out of business ! My only choice then would be to buy and install another video card, retune my monitor for color correctness and start over. That will entail weeks of lost time and money.

I was going to switch to Apple, but decided to stay with what HAD been working.

The GWX Ultimate Outsider Control Panel is working very well. I DID have to turn off all updates because some were sneeking back in, but since I turned updates OFF in the GWX CP, they have stopped.

However, I was reading a Woody Leonard posting about all of this and he agreed with a poster that “you” might want to set your automatic updates to “Notify before install” instead of “Off”.

Should “Download but notify before install” option be selected in GWX-CP in order to be aware of available updates? Will I still be protected from Win10 while I explore options relative to my Dell nVidia drivers?

      Thanks,
      Paul

It supplements the Windows 8.1 Control Panel. It does one thing only: let’s you decide whether or not to get the Windows 10 upgrade.

More Good News! My STARTUP and SHUTDOWN times are now 10 secs or less. They had become longer and longer. Not sure if it was the GWX-CP or the Macrium Reflect (with “Verify File System” option checked), but I had run scannow about a month ago with no noticeable improvement). And I no longer see Win10 threats.

Thanks for all of your help. You guys are great.

      Good news!

I refreshed the (free) Macrium Reflect and ran it Friday night.

Then I downloaded and ran the GWX Control Panel

      and….THEY were “Beautiful Things”.

The MS Saturday Win10 THREAT came and went without a Win10 Upgrade.

Thanks for all the helpful comments and to Josh Mayfield for his well-executed GWX CP coding.

Paul T: “why we recommend GWX Control Panel”
Does this replace the Windows 8.1 Control Panel or supplement it?
Are there any downsides to it, for example if at some future date you want to upgrade to Windows 10, will you have to install Win10 from the MS Website?

      Thank you,
      Paul

I wish to thank ALL of you for your ideas and tests. I use the FF browser. Google is too much of an invasive big brother for me (aka spy).

I tried using Outlook.com and it worked, so the problem IS with Verizon’s email system.
