Yes, it’s the only one where it’s this noticeable, and the problem is very recent, like two days ago till now.
There may be some other areas, but this computer is practically a “drawing machine” – very little else goes on in it, except for email and website use. Hope that gives you a clue?

I don’t know if this matters, but Juno is one of those inexpensive ISP’s with a “skin” over IE…………So, we’re back to working with the crummy IE 6 which has driven me wild in the past.
Thanks for the education and the help. I’m going to uninstall and reinstall Juno as soon as I can get the CD mailed to me.
In the meantime, it seems to be working, although with “herky jerky” graphics. I can live with that for awhile.

OK, after trying several things, and hearing from Juno, my ISP, seems two files have become corrupted and should be replaced. msvcrt.dll and mfc42.dll. I downloaded them, and got the mfc42.dll installed OK – (I think – nothing indicated that
is was not OK)…….but, tried and failed to get msvcrt.dll. installed.
Here’s what I tried so far:
cut and paste – – “cannot ex
change this file – it is being used by Windows”
Tried renaming the file “old” and cutting and pasting the new one – “cannot rename this file or move this file -”
The date on the original msvcrt is April 2000 – – the one I downloaded is August 2003. Should I keep trying to find out how to
replace the dll or not? If so, is there some way I haven’t tried that will work?
It’s amazing what you people know – I hope I’m not being a pest, and do appreciate the help.

I tried the DIR C: /s /ah >hidden.txt, but only got “File not found”……….Did I screw up the input?
Also, I did this from the DOS from the Programs list in Windows. Correct?
Hate to be so dumb, but I’m trying…..

    • in reply to: HIdden Files #701912

thanks for all the replies – I actually know better than to mess too much with the settings. Maybe I’m misconstruing the screens that I’m getting. “Access denied – you do not have permission to move this file”, or something to that effect. I’m trying to clean out old files, and find myself stymied more than seems reasonable…..Is there any other reason I’d be denied access to a file I created, and didn’t download from the web????? I was thinking I could gather all the hidden stuff into one folder, then never
touch it again……..these things seem to be scattered all over the computer, in almost every folder! Help?

    • in reply to: CD burning – file problems #700395

OK – thanks for the help so far. Maybe I should just ask…..How do you use your .exe files that have been moved to a CD?
Now, I’ll shut up and listen.

    • in reply to: CD burning – file problems #699116

Being long-winded, I probably obscured the description….. It is moving the files from the CD to the desktop that’s giving me
fits. The only way (after some trying) was to insert the CD, then open the file there, and try to work from it. Trying to update the CD was part of the problem. Trying to remove the program from the CD is when I got the screen telling me that I couldn’t move a file. I hope that’s a little clearer? (Probably not).
Thanks for the help in the past. I will look into that program you mentioned – sounds like what I need. Also, I obviously got the modem working again by uninstalling/reinstalling, and clearing a Kernel32 page-fault. God, I love Microsoft

    • in reply to: scrunched graphics – again (IE6.SP1) #698800

A solution to IE6 scrunching the graphics.
I think I had an overload with IE6. So, I split the one large folder into three smaller ones, and since then, (just a couple days) it has not happened again. There is apparently a limit to how much stuff you can have in one folder, and I must have gone way past that limit. I’m posting this in case someone else runs into the problem. Thanks for all the help and patience. clapping

    • in reply to: assigning memory? #698793

Thanks, Cowboy – to answer your question, I have 512 MB, and am running almost nothing but this small architectural
program (3D), and Photoshop. I don’t even have half the stuff that came with the computer installed, and regularly unload
“tons” of graphics onto CD’s. The properties of the computer page tells me consistantly that the machine is (usually) 900+%
free. And yet, this program bogs down all the time. I’ll check into the program you mentioned and read the suggested stuff
you posted. You guys are really helpfull. Thank you.

    • in reply to: PROGRAM.EXE – lost #697286

      UPDATE:
I’ve downloaded three different TweakUI’s, and ran into the same problem on each. I’ve made sure they’re Win98(SE), I’ve
updated my Virus stuff, and checked again for that Backweb gadget. No viruses, did scandisk and defrag again, this time with the download “PerfectDisk” (thanks for that advice), Read the advice about making IE the default browser, and still haven’t
gotten it to work. I’ll take a month off, and try this again later. Right now, I don’t know what else to do. Again, thanks for the help.

    • in reply to: slowdown – suddenly #695249

msconfig has been trimmed down to systray and explorer for many years. Occasionally somebody will try to sneak in, but I keep a close eye on it. Also did another search for that Backweb element…….nothing showed up. Things have improved somewhat after the latest defrag and scandisk, so I’ll keep looking for other clean-ups. I’ve also dumped cookies, temp files, internet history, so that’s all done. If you can think of anything else, I’d sure appreciate hearing from you. Thanks again for past help.

    • in reply to: PROGRAM.EXE – lost #695108

I discovered the same thing – I have decided to dump Tweak UI rather than go through all that misery.
      Thanks for the help anyway.

    • in reply to: slowdown – suddenly #694880

Thanks to all – I have defragged and Scandisked recently, and I uninstalled Kodak a long time ago. Just to be sure, I did another defrag/scandisk, and it seems to have helped…..some. But, the delay is still there. I’m posting another question to cover another weird thing going on, which might be connected??? It concerns the loss of “program.exe”……..maybe this has something to do with the problem? I discovered this when trying to install TweakUI that I downloaded several days ago.

    • in reply to: taskbar – can’t add anything #689810

Mr Du mass says thanks……….I just wonder how I managed to turn it off? But, it’s back on, so no need to explain.
