Woody.. your “ranting” about how good Windows7 is.. is why I let my subscription lapse. There is.. an argument to be made (in my opinion) that if it were not for all the third party developers..that MS has bought out.. and incorporated the software in its latest version of Windows, Windows would not be the program it is today. As someone who seems to be on the MS payroll you forget that those third party developers hire people and need a market as well.

Here is an interesting challenge for you.. Write about ALL the companies who developed software that is now incorporated in the latest version of Windows.. and, where are those workers now?

      Perfect.. thank you very much

      Thanks
I will try that approach. I assume you are working on the actual label sheet when you do this on an individual label. Is there then a way to fill the sheet with duplicates?

    • Hi Woody.. It is articles like yours that have converted me to a non paying subscriber. “Don’t pay for software you don’t need’ Be honest.. would this include Windows 7?

    • in reply to: Windows XP: Looking back, looking forward #1254590

I suspect that 60.03 % you mention would be quite happy to stay with XP if given a choice. Unfortunately the game is to force users to upgrade. Planned obsolescence, true with most consumer items.
You mention the option to run in XP mode with a free “Windows XP Mode” software for Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate. Great… you just paid a lot extra for the Professional or Ultimate and they throw in a freebie. The folks that likely need to run XP stuff because they could not afford to upgrade all the peripherals or software are the same one who can not afford the deluxe version of Windows. Typical pricing policy of Microsoft though, they need to make that obscene profit.
You imply that Windows 7 is to Vista what XP was to ME. What issues that made people unhappy with Vista have been resolved with 7? I suspect Vista was unpopular because it was seen as an unnecessary upgrade just as is Windows 7, except for a very small percentage of users.

      Convert FAT to NTFS

Substitute drive letter for your external HDD.

How to Convert FAT to NTFS File System without Data Loss?

Thanks.. that (convert) worked like a charm and now my *.iso files copy easily.

    • in reply to: XP file size limitation? #1253218

Thanks for the responses. It seems on looking at the file format on my Verbatim External hard drive that the problem is likely the fact it is formatted in FAT 32 The default as I never changed it (or considered changing it).

    • in reply to: Quick launch double click issues #1250321

This is not a mouse problem, I don’t think. As I understand it the quick launch area is designed to start programs with one click… But a double click will start two instances of some programs. I am trying to find out if there is a fix or setting that would ignore that habitual double click I start everything with.

      Thanks JoeP
From device manager I noticed a redundant Network Adapter which may have been the problem. I will keep an eye on it and see if the problem has been fixed.

      Thanks again for your time

    • in reply to: Restore? F11 key does not work #1225452

Seems I have resolved my own problem. The instructions were rather vague, evidently for the F11 key or the Start>Programs>>>> to work the recovery DVD must be in the drive. They do make it complicated…….

      Thanks

    • in reply to: What — or who — is using your connection? #1212237

NetLimiter comes in both free (including for commercial use) and paid versions.
The free version does exactly what this article is about: identify what processes are using the internet. Simple and effective and FREE!
      http://www.netlimiter.com

      Thanks Bruce..
I know… processes on my computer (s) that are using the internet. What I was hoping for was something that monitored events that do not.. originate on my computer, something that tells me when my wireless is being accessed.. from the other side.

    • in reply to: What — or who — is using your connection? #1212198

Is there a gadget that would inform me who and when something tries to connect to my wireless connection? I have a combination modem / router (ADSL), my 3 computers are hard wired and I have modem lights that indicate when that computer is turned on.

My wireless (for my notebook and Wii) has a light to show activity. Every once in a while I notice a flicker (for a few seconds) of wireless activity. Is someone trying to log in… piggyback off my connection.. or trying to hack into my systems. Ideally I would like a program on my main computer that would pop up when activity on the wireless connection is encountered..

      Thanks for any thoughts

      Ralph

    • in reply to: Save as Web Page, issues with format #1212039

Thanks. I will try on #2. On #1… not sure how to delete the unwanted columns.. The “unused” portion of any sheet is pretty big. While in Excel any unused rows or columns just do not show in any print. While the sheet is open the cells go on forever………… I wondered if setting the print size would affect how big the web page is… but have not yet found the time to experiment.

Thanks Paul… interesting link.. I tried various suggestions but sadly none worked.. Have decided to push the free FileZilla to the members of our family website. I tried it and it seems pretty easy..
