I don’t know if it’s related, but after installing SP-1, my taskbar icons started acting strangely, too. Occasionally, I’d boot-up and a completely different set of icons would be there. Or sometimes, the icons wouldn’t be there at all. Or sometimes, some of the icons would be missing. I’m running a GeForce 4 video board and installed the latest NVidia driver (40.72) and the problem disappeared. Wierd.

You should be able to simply delete the folder containing the Service Pack uninstall files. I did and it worked fine.

    • in reply to: Moire pattern #631439

I recommend that you get the latest driver for your video card and install it. It should be a relatively painless event that, more than likely, will clear up the problem.

Did the moire pattern literally show up one day, when it was not there the previous day? Did you do anything or make any changes that could have caused this problem? You might want to try, with your system power off, removing the monitor connection to your video card and inserting/removing it a few times. You might have some corrosion on the connectors. You might also want to try re-seating your video card.

      Good luck!

    • in reply to: Old CD-ROM problem #626638

There should be a thin, round, 2 or 3 conductor cable between the CD-ROM drive and the sound card. This is simply the ‘sound connection’ from the drive to the sound card, allowing the CDs to produce sound through the sound card. The CD-ROM drive must also have a data cable connecting it to one of the IDE channels on your motherboard. This is how the drive and the computer exchange data. The data cable should be a flat, 40 conductor ribbon cable plugged into the back of the drive and the IDE port on your motherboard.

You shouldn’t need a driver for the CD-ROM drive. These are typically plug-and-play devices that Win98 already has generic drivers for. Assuming your machine is running OK with the new Win98 installation, check to be sure you have both sound and data cables connected to your CD-ROM drive and that those cables are connected to both the sound card and motherboard, respectively. I suspect that, for some reason, all you have connected to your CD-ROM drive is the sound cable. Look around for a nearby IDE connector that may have fallen off of your drive. Poke around on the Internet for instructions on how to install a CD-ROM drive…it’ll be helpful.

      Good luck!

      Bob,

Select Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Options. It does sound like everything’s powered down for hibernation. Good luck!

I think you’ll have to merge all of the documents into a single document, then create the PDF file. You should be able to import the Publisher and Excel files into a Word document. You could then scan the PDF file and place it in your Word document as a graphic. Not sure about importing Publisher files into Word. Good luck!

    • in reply to: Win XP Firewall (Windows XP) #624557

From this month’s issue of PC Magazine:

Microsoft added a firewall to Windows XP called Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). To enable it, go to Control Panel | Network Connections and right-click on a connection name. Select Properties, then click on the Advanced tab for each of your connections, and enable Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet. Unfortunately, ICF doesn’t provide nearly as much protection as tools like Symantec’s Norton Internet Security. ICF examines only inbound network traffic; it can’t control programs on your system that are sending information out to the Internet.

Run, run away quickly…no quicker…from Win ME. XP is more stable, quicker, smoother, more refined…make the switch. Highly recommended.

If you have the cash and plan on networking anywhere outside of the house, get Pro. Home and Pro both have the same basic internal components, but Pro gives you a few more ‘industrial strength’ options.

      Thanks, Peter.

    • in reply to: Input Masks (A2K SR-1) #623264

      Pete,

Sorry…another question. Does the table field (as opposed to the form field) need an all caps input mask for your method to work?

    • in reply to: Input Masks (A2K SR-1) #623263

      Pete,

Ignore my last message. I ran a test and confirmed that the data gets written to the table in uppercase. Thanks for the great suggestion!

    • in reply to: Input Masks (A2K SR-1) #623239

      Peter,

Using your method, will the text be written to the table in upper case, even if the form field does not have an upper case mask?

    • in reply to: XP SP1 Installation Proceedure (XP SP1) #623169

      Alan,

While Woody’s advise presents a perfect case scenario, I was in the same situation as you when I installed SP1 with the entire Stand-Alone patch. I had installed all the available Hotfix patches, too. I upgraded without uninstalling the patches and my WinXP Home is working perfectly and might be a little quicker than before the upgrade. Of course, Windows behaves differently from machine to machine, but I recommend that you proceed with the installation without uninstalling your 22 Hotfix patches.

    • in reply to: Text Box Grow/Shrink (A2K SR1) #623115

I discovered the problem. The box had been working properly until a user decided to paste text from an e-mail message into it. Doing so, the box refused to grow to accommodate the text. However, the box grows just fine when I paste text from a Word document into it. Strange behavior!
