    • in reply to: Transfer files to a new WLM? #1367674

      Update:
First, Thank you, Clint, also, for your suggestions. I had attempted the export function numerous times back when I first created the accounts on the new laptop. I was able to export the Account data to a thumb drive, but got error after error trying to export emails. And I don’t recall even have the option to export the storage folder hierarchy. Anyway… I gave up on the export approach way back then.

The Windows Easy Transfer certainly seemed like it would be easy. And I suppose, if I had a better handle on my hardware problems, It might have been much easier. As my PCs are all on my LAN, I used that approach first, but the time needed to complete the transfers was too much for my desktop. WET would be telling me it needs 4.5 hrs, then 6.5 hrs, then 10.5 hours, then 1 day 3 hours… Huh? What do I really care how long it takes? Let it run! And then my desktop would lose power… Restart the process over again… only to lose power again. This power weirdness has not been a big issue for me before now. I might notice that, if I left some youtube videos running while I went upstairs for dinner, that my pc would be powered off by the time I got back to it. It never really died on me while I was sitting in front of it using it. There seemed to be a combination of factors involved and one of those was, “I was not ‘using’ the PC.” Well, now that I want the PC to run this WET for hours on end (1 day, 3 hours… really?). Well, now I Have a problem. The only thing that I know of that will shut down a PC is environment issues (running too hot). I recall setting the BIOS to alert me in case of high temperatures, but I am not aware of such an alert happening (but then again, I’m off eating dinner when it dies… what do I really know? Nothing). Well, I took the tower side off and blew out all the dust I could with the manual huff and puff method, and left the side off. I also changed the approach to write to an external USB drive instead of via the LAN. My guess is that it ran for about 7-9 hours before completing in the middle of the night (no power loss, yeah!), moving about 77GB of files.
I ran WET on the new laptop to read the files in from the Passport drive. That seemed to take only about 5 hrs. No problems with it.
I started up Windows Live Mail and noticed that the process had created copies of the accounts I had already created. In other words, if there was an account to be transferred from the old desktop, that’s what it did, ignoring the fact that there were already accounts by those names (it just added a (2)). I went through my list deleting duplicate accounts. and still ended up with over 16,000 new, unread, emails. Oh joy… It did transfer all the storage folders and historical emails within them (yeah!). So, Now I’m trying to determine what these 16,000+ emails are. Very few seem to be straight up Duplicates. Some I remember reading on my Desktop, but I don’t see that they are a dup on my laptop. I also haven’t figured out how the email ‘Rules’ are created/maintained on my laptop. We’ll see. For now, everything is on the one new laptop and I’ll just have to work my way through the junk and reorganize as best I can. Thanks again for the help.

      Joe,

I was not aware of Windows Easy Transfer. Thanks so much for what looks like just what I need. I’ll get back to y’all after after I fix, or break, something!

    • in reply to: How about Hotmail instead of Windows Live Mail? #1332616

Clint, thank you for your relpy. You and Roderunnner have given me more to think about. Does your having storage folder structures under WLM indicate that you perfer WLM over Hotmail or that Hotmail is in some way not robust enough or user-friendly enough? Your idea of a total rebuild might be worth a try. I attempted some exporting of my Storage Folders (as Roderunner suggested) only to be stopped by errors (generic type… unable to export due to errors, maybe space limitations or corrupted files). WLM provides a ‘clean up’ utility as a maintenance option (seems to re-write emails to release freedup space, presumably following a deleting of a bunch of files). I have used this utility a number of times. Doing so certainly has not prevented the screwing around with emails in my Storage Folders. Another wonky behavior is that often, on the initial Move to, create new folder, ok (move to new folder), sequence; the ‘Move to’ does not work. I often want to save a 2-email sequence in which I create the new folder as part of moving of the first email (while in the email view) and then I do a normal ‘Move to’ for the second email. I Must now switch to the folder view to check whether or not either message actually moved to the new storage folder because there’s a 50/50 chance neither email is really in the folder I just moved them to. I now have to find them in my inbox and move them with a select and drag and drop sequence from the folder view. Usually, once I have ‘stabilized’ the folder by doing this, future ‘move to’s will work. All seems good until that time comes that I want to go back to the original email of the series I have been saving, only to find that the folder is either empty or has a couple of totally unrelated emails in it (problem described in the original post).
If I describe your suggestion of a total rebuild of my WLM accounts and folders as, rebuilding to put myself in the same position of repeating my ‘move to’ sequences using the same software, but hoping for different results; well, you can see why I am thinking about Hotmail. Perhaps I should think about Gmail instead???…

    • in reply to: Hoax calls from “Microsoft” #1329874

Just adding to the mix. I just got off the phone with a man with an Indian accent claiming to be from the Microsoft Support Group/Microsoft Help team. He said they have been logging alot of errors from my PC so they know my computer has a problem. Really? I say. Absolutely sir. He directs me to the run box via Windows-R key stroke and has me type in eventvwr. This took quite awhile do to his accent and me playing dumb (Why? What for? etc. He’s going to show me, for my benefit he insists.) Then we open the Application log and he has me scoll down looking for red x’d error messages. Do you have more than 5? he asked. Crikey, I’ve a bunch of them, I said. Then he had me scroll down looking for Yellow Warning messages. I have a bunch of those too. He says that it is all the Errors and Warnings that have prompted the helpdesk to call me about my PC. He says it has problems that I don’t even know about. Did I know about all these Errors and Warnings? No, I didn’t, I truthfully answered. The he has me go back to the Run screen and type in http://www.aammyy.com. I when he says to hit enter, I said I don’t want to hit enter until I know what this web site is all about. He says this will connect me to a technician that is waiting to help clear up all these issues my PC is having (remember all those Errors and Warnings?). I checked my phone… 10 minutes had elapsed. I hung up on him. He sounded sincere and was fairly convincing because he seemed know a lot about PC’s in the sense that, being a GUI menu follower, I have never heard of the keystroke shortcut Windows-R to pull up the run command screen and it never occurred to me to use the run command to connect to a web site. Cool. I can image many other people falling for this. I am in New Jersey and this just happened. Oh, yea, the call came from Seattle, WA (and for those of us that never bothered to look up Redmond on a map, we associate Seattle, WA with MS). The caller id log says: 206-456-0661. Enjoy! and Be Careful out There. (really enjoyed Hill Street Blues…)

    • in reply to: Great Android helper apps for Windows #1314151

Fred, I thought I was heading in the same direction as you, but I was wrong. Our family has resisted Smartphones due to the perceived high cost of the data plans for our family of four. I thought I hit upon an alternative when I found these 2 devices: TruConnect’s MiFi 2200 and the Ainol Novo 7 Basic. The TruConnect is a Hotspot for up to 5 devices at a cost of $5/month plus $0.039/MB download (3.9 cents per MB of data downloaded). When I compared this cost with the Hotspots available at my local Costco, It was a savings on the order of 1/2 the cost. In addition, if we felt we would be going for a month or more without needing our MiFi 2200, we could temporarily suspend the subscription and save the $5/month. This device and pricing works as advertised and as expected… we are happy with it.

The Ainol Novo tablet is another story. My kids are happy (Angry Birds was pre-installed), but I am not. First, I knowingly purchased these Chinese Tablets with my logic as follows:

Great specs for money – here’s the summary from the Merimobiles web site:

This very robust Android tablet with Honeycomb 3.2, Dual cameras, 8GB (plus support for up to 32GB Micro SD card), HDMI output, and a remote control! all for only $140!! It supports English and it runs Honeycomb 3.2 (and upgradable to 4.0 according to some forum posts). I didn’t care that it was manufactured in China!

Here’s my reality: Evidently I don’t understand something very basic about Operating Systems. I thought that Honeycomb is Honeycomb and if an app says it will run on an Andriod device at release 1.5 or later, then it should run on my tablet. Nope. I browsed to the Brother web site to download/install an app to let me print to and scan from my wireless printer; but I get a message saying the app is not compatible with my device. I got the same ‘Incompatiblity’ messages trying to load apps for: a QR/Bar Code scanner, Roboform, an Office Doc app, my cable company app, and few others. Why is my device incompatible? It’s running Honeycomb 3.2, it’s an android device, and these apps are all supposed to run on Android Devices at releases at or before Honeycomb 3.2.

I sent this support question to the makers of Roboform:
I found your page containing an App for running RoboForm on an Android OS. I have an Ainol Novo 7 Basic running Android 3.2. When I attempt to download your App, I get an error saying: Your device isn’t compatible with this item. IS there any hope of getting a compatible version any time soon?

      Here is their response:
No. Support of any non ARM-processor based devices will never be provided.
      Thank you.

So, I thought that hardware was built using micro-code so that an operating system (OS) could run on that hardware (or, perhaps) various operating systems were built to run on certain hardware (via the microcode interface settings), and every OS published the information necessary for application developers to interface with that OS (in much the same way as some applications provide API’s for other applications to interface with them). So what is different in the world of tablets and phones that a non ARM-processor translates into a Honeycomb 3.2 that is not compatible with apps written for Honeycomb 3.2? What should we consumers be looking for so that others don’t make the same mistake I did? I did not see any warnings like: “This device uses a non-ARM processor, and therefore will not be compatible with most Android apps in the marketplace.”

And the other ‘problem’ I have is that, while “English is supported” and Honeycomb supports English, All my error messages are in Chinese which makes it impossible for me to even begin troubleshooting. Silly me.

    • in reply to: Firefox 8 released on Tuesday, November 8th #1306406

Betrayed by that which I needed most…. Turned out the problem was the RoboForm plug-in. Updated RoboForm to a newer release and Firefox works fine. Thanks to all the commenters. Creating a new profile did not help, but now I use a specific profile instead of Default. The Revo Uninstall cleaned out some old CA eTrust crap that I had not been able to clear out. Hadn’t run ccleaner in awhile and so it may have been overdue (as debatable as that may be). I wonder what it’ll be next time…

    • in reply to: Firefox 8 released on Tuesday, November 8th #1306308

When I started Firefox this morning, it said it was applying an update and then it crashed with the Mozilla Crash Report box. When I select the restart firefox option, it crashes again, and again, and to ensure my own insanity, again and again, and because I am a slow learner, again, and again.
Then I used IE look for help and found no reported problems/fixes for my issue. I tried inputting my mozilla crash id into a mozilla crash report site and got ‘not found’ errors. I tried loading firefox in safemode (holding shift key). I then downloaded firefox to install from scratch. That seemed to be a successful install, but firefox still crashes on startup. I don’t see a ‘select an older version’ button (what I think I need until this bug is fixed. Any suggestions? Time for chrome? or?

      **Update***
I found a 7.0.1 version which I installed and, of course, now none of my plug-ins work (and I really need my roboform plugin). Back when I was running FF 7.0.1, there were plugins that worked with that version, but evidently the plugin manager isn’t capable of finding the older appropriate plugin. Seems ‘wrong’ to me in the sense that I would expect this to be baseline functionality for a plugin manager.

      ** Update ***
At least FF was up. I went to the Help/Info tab and FF starting applying some updates automatically. They looked like 2-digit updates. I figured that’s ok, perhaps I’ll end up with 7.5.6 or something. The update process presented a screen showing a number of plugins and a note saying they would be disabled unless I selected them. I selected the ones that were of interest to me. The updates/installs completed and FF restarted and then crashed again. I am now back where I started. I can not get FF to start without crashing immediately. ARGH!!!!

That’s pretty much what I said… She says that signature would only used for certain clients/situations and she feels it would be a positive change.

    • in reply to: Paste / Clipboard problem #1250945

Does the copy and paste function work within Windows Explorer?

      No.

      Process attempted:
      1. Opened a folder (Folder A) and selected a document (tried a .doc and a .pdf); did a Copy (tested with Ctrl+C and a Edit/Copy via menu… the Copy command is available, i.e., Not grayed out).

      2. Opened another folder (Folder B) and attempted a Paste (tried with Ctrl+V and a Edit/Paste via menu). Did not work. Viewing the commands from the Edit menu, I can see that the Paste option is grayed out.

      3. I am able to select the document and then do a drag&drop (and via right-click to select Copy).

Thanks for the gray matter on this.

    • in reply to: Hard-drive defragmentation is still worthwhile #1223466

A few months ago I began running MyDefrag on a daily basis (MyDefrag provides scripts for daily, weekly, and monthly defrags). This seemed to work well until I had a problem that had me attempt to do a ‘System Restore’ on my hard drive. I was not able to restore to any of the past 3 restore points (I did not try any more than that). While scratching my head over this, I remembered reading somewhere that defrags can interfere with being able to use Window’s System Restore function. I have since retreated to a weekly defrag schedule. Do you know what the latest scoop is on this issue?

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable – see Help 19)

      Joe,

Thanks for the response and I must apologize for the poor placement of my post. After posting, I found similar posts in the General Windows area. It seems that many others have the same problem and https://www.askwoody.com/viewpatch.php%5B/url%5D shows a red light.

The laptop uses ZoneAlarm and the Desktop uses Avast!

I just went through the motions to start a Custom Install on one of my work systems and it showed only 2 patches. I suspect MS has pulled to bad one.

Thanks again for your on-going help.

    • in reply to: Expression error, but it looks good to me. (2K) #1104209

Thanks for the help. I was blindly changing queries to point to the new table and made the error pointed out by Hans.

Thanks again to both of you.

    • in reply to: Point to new table (2K) #1103792

Thanks, guys. That insight gave me the direction to set up the procedure I will use each year. Very much appreciated.

    • in reply to: Count & SUM (Access 2000) #1057539

Thanks for the fast response! I tried a number of tests using ‘First’ but could not get the query to give me the ‘Count’ and ‘$Amount’ totals I need.

I think I might need to build a number of separate queries (one of each of my sort collections) and then create a report that will do the Counting and $Amount totaling… Just an idea that I am starting to investigate.

      +==+++
Well, that doesn’t work very well. I created a bunch of queries but ,when I try to base the the report on more than one, I get an error because I am attaching the same $Amount field from each query. I can create a report to do my Count and Total Amount for one query, but that means I need to create a bunch of reports and this just doesn’t seem reasonable. Back to the drawing board…

      +++====+++++=====++++

OK. For the next newbie to trip over this….
I was including the Name field so that I could verify the records being pulled. This field is not one of the sort fields so I ignored them except to set them to Not Showing. Well, just Not Showing is not enough to prevent them forcing all the records to show (with the bum count of 1 and the individual $Amount showing). Once I changed the ‘Total’ setting for these fields that I had been ignoring, to either First or Where (as suggested above by MBarron), I got the results I wanted (any setting except ‘Group by’ will work – not just First or Where).

So, ALL fields that are used for selection criteria must be set to ‘Where’; $Amount must be set to SUM; and either set a Field like ‘name’ to ‘Count’ or set ‘name’ to any setting except ‘Group by’. If you do not use ‘name’ for your counter, then use $Amount a second time – and set it to ‘Count’ in that second instance.

      Enjoy!

Doh!! After running for years with “Update Fields” turned off, I had to turn it on to get a new date calculation to run/print properly… back to the drawing board.

      Thanks for help!
