      Hi Rick
That’s what I followed before and I see the info you mean regarding the transparent icon file.

I have found the following on line and checked with virus checker.

      Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4
I have down loaded and run it and only clicked the remove shortcut arrows option which it did instantly
without having to apply any of the other settings.
I have restarted my laptop and all the icons are without the annoying little arrow

      Hi Rick
It would seem that removing the arrows from the shortcuts was the cause.
I have deleted the reg info that I created when getting rid of the arrows and have restarted the laptop twice and all the icons appear normal but now have the arrows on them.

So with your help I have solved the problem but now have the arrows back and will have to stick with them unless you or someone else knows a way to remove them.

I must thank you again for helping me diagnose and find the cause.

The little arrows do annoy me though. Mmmmmmmm

      Hi Rick

Windows version 1511 (OS build 10586.63) the windows.
      That was an interesting exercise.
I created another local user account and all the icons where correct although the resolution was larger.
Here is the interesting bit in the bottom left corner of the icon (Where the little arrow should be) are little black squares.
Now I think about it this may have started when I followed a process on line to remove the arrows from the shortcuts.
The reason mine are showing just black squares are actually the black square of the arrow but because of the resolution they are covering the entire icon.

I will try and retrace my steps and reinstall the arrows and see what that does to the icons.

Still no idea why it should produce black squares though.

Rick can I ask you a question please.
Can you tell me what files are in the folder “C:UsersBrianAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsExplorer”
(of course your name not mine)

along with a 30 x ???.db files.I have the following

      ExplorerStartupLog_RunOnce.etl
      ExplorerStartupLog.etl

Just checking to see if this is normal.

    • in reply to: Desktop Icons Displaying Black Squares #1547955

      Not so easy to do.
I did like I normally do and deleted all the files with .db in that folder but it doesn’t actually delete them instantly because the are in use by windows explorer.
I then followed the clear icon cache instructions but once again Black Boxes.
So still unsure what is happening.

    • in reply to: Desktop Icons Displaying Black Squares #1547950

It sounds very much like the icon cache is corrupt. Rather than spend time duplicating here how to reset the cache, have a look at this How to Rebuild the Icon Cache in Windows 10 article and let us know if it fixes the issue for you.

      Hope this helps…

      Thanks for the response

I have just followed the directions as stated and after the restart all the icons are Black Squares again.

Am I correct in assuming that the .ico file referred to in that link is to correct the system icons only.
The system icons are displaying correctly all the time it is the shortcut links to my programs which keep showing as black squares.

it seems to be loosing the icons to display but still work as shortcut should and open the correct program
so it knows where the program is located but not able to recover the icon.

      Odd or what !

      Just for info.
I have the desktop set like the old windows not apps as my laptop has no touch screen.

      Cheers Jerry

I seem to have sorted the problem myself after posting.
First though I should have said Windows 7 is the system.
I did un-install Bonjour which causes this problem sometimes but this did not help.
I did however find that in one of the network settings it had a IP address typed in and once that was removed
and left to get IP automatically it cleared the unidentified network.
      Cheers again for you response.

Just out of curiosity what’s the post from sunga3232 all about. ???

    • in reply to: Setting a static IP address for my desktop #1382505

You will be pleased to hear I had a Blue Tit in the box this morning checking out the dimensions and making the access to it’s liking.
I have had the box checked out three times since I put it up in early February.

I really needed the access to show my four grandchildren when we visit them.

      Cheers

      Tento Tech

I can connect to the Bird box on the lap top using the local IP address and the port number with no problems.

What got me confused was that the Belkin Router I was using allowed me to see the bird box via the internet.
But it wouldn’t let me set up a local static IP without causing lots of problems.

This router lets me set a local static IP easily but won’t let me use it to view via the internet.

      Glad it is all sorted.

Thanks for all you help much appreciated

Tinto you have sussed out the problem before I could post this .

      Another update.
      Info from Talktalk.

It seems that some routers don’t like NAT loopback whatever that is, and this is one of them.
This means that it will not let you use the internet to look at something set up for port forwarding if you use that same router to connect to the internet.

In a nutshell my system is working and I should be able to view it from anywhere else using some other access to the internet.
That I proved by using the T-Mobile dongle and phone which worked fine.

    • in reply to: Setting a static IP address for my desktop #1382310

I have just tried accessing my Nestbox via the port forward option.
I disconnected my laptop from my router and connected using a T-Mobile dongle I have for travelling.
It connected without a hitch directly to the log on screen then through to show the Birdbox clear as a bell live.

I have reconnected to the internet via the Router and Talktalk and cannot connect to it at all.

      Now I am confused????

Were do I go from here.

Is it the Router or Talktalk and why does my phone connect

I have checked the Smartphone and it was connecting to the box ok but I have just discovered that it was connecting using the T-Mobile service
I have connected to the Router with it and I am unable to connect to the Birdbox.

So we are back to the Router or Talktalk stopping me accessing the birdbox.???????????

    • in reply to: DDNS services #1382236

      Hi
And thanks to all responding to this post regarding DDNS.

If you go to this post you will see things have moved on but still having problems.

      http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread//152905-Setting-a-static-IP-address-for-my-desktop?p=897104&posted=1#post897104

      In a nut shell.
Unable to create a local static IP address on the Belkin Router and it started dropping the connection frequently so.
Changed the Router for a TalkTalk D-Link SDL2680 which allows me to set up a static IP address for my desktop very easily.
But it’s a big BUT I have been unable to get access to the desktop via the internet.
Set port forwarding up and checked it is open using a on-line port checker.
Also able to access the Bird box via the internet on my smart phone.

I have no need for the DDNS service because I can get the software to send me an email if the IP address from my ISP is changed.

So if you think you can help please take look at the other post.

    • in reply to: Setting a static IP address for my desktop #1382119

      Hi again

I just tried viewing the bird box on my Samsung Galaxy phone via the internet.
It worked fine managed to see the login page then the Birdbox.
      No problem at all.

Checked with GRC ShieldsUP! — Internet Vulnerability Profiling and its telling me that port 3078 is open
which of cause it must be given the phone can connect to it.

I have tried both IE and Chrome on my laptop and they do not work.
      How Odd is that.

If I put the IP address on here would you be able to try connecting to it.
Not sure how that would help except confirm its the Browser that’s preventing it.

I could put a temperary log on for you to try but not sure thats a good idea.

      Don’t know who’s watching.

Regards the port used to view the bird box it is added to the IP address when connecting to the Box so it is specificly 3078

    • in reply to: Setting a static IP address for my desktop #1382010

      Hi thanks for your help.

Just to clarify a couple of points in the manual.
Because it won’t auto set-up using UPnP for which it uses port 6139 or something around there.
I have to follow the instructions on setting port forward up manually and for that it uses port 3078.
Which worked fine when it was available on the other Router.

I did try to select another port but the software is fixed on these particular ones.

I can connect to the software using the internal IP address and port 3078 but not if I try using the external IP address.
Regards the setting up of a DDNS service I don’t need to do that because
I have set up the software to email me of any change to the IP address when my ISP changes it so I just change the address I am looking for remotely.

Still convinced that a setting in the Router is blocking the access.

when I am setting the port forward up I have been specifying start 3078 and finish 3078 as the start and finish port to watch
how insecure is it if I widen the range.
Not sure it will help though.
