Arie, I’ve been experiencing similar problems with sending mail. Moderator/MVP jscher2000 suggested deleting all of my e-mail accounts in Outlook 2000 and then re-create each one. Unfortunately that suggestion did not resolve my issue. I have no problems **receiving** e-mail through any of my accounts.

I am getting several different error messages pertaining to (paraphrased) “connection suddenly/unexpectedly terminated with the server.” Like you, I tried Outlook 2002 and its account settings “test” feature…sometimes it’d work, other times it failed. Or it would finally send a test message back to me some 24 hours later.

I’m running Outlook 2000 with Office 2000 Pro SR-1a under Windows XP Pro.

By chance, are any of your domains and e-mail services registered with Register.com? I just transferred several of mine to them within the past couple of weeks and I have experienced a lot of difficulty sending e-mail from Outlook.

Oddly, I have no problem sending e-mail from Register.com’s webmail interface.

Update: I was unable to resolve this issue by re-creating each of my e-mail accounts in Outlook 2000. I had subsequently installed a trial edition of Office XP Pro to see if the problem persisted in Outlook 2002. It did, and because you cannot apply any of the service packs to a trial edition of Office XP, I have since reinstalled Office 2000 Pro.

The problem continues with sending e-mail from my accounts via domains that are registered with Register.com. SMTP errors (“connection was suddenly/unexpectedly terminated with the server”) are being returned, so I am now working with Register.com to resolve the issue.

Thanks to everyone that looked at and responded to my posts.

Thanks for the suggestion. I recall using this tactic once before and it worked. I’m using this event as an excuse to install a trial version of Office XP, so I’ll post back and let you know if this tip worked.

    • Yes, Bob, what you say makes sense.

My concern is that when I insert the retail UPGRADE WinXP Pro CD, it will generate an error message saying that it cannot find any qualifying product for upgrade (all it finds is the files from the evaluation copy of WinXP Pro). Then, perhaps, at that point it will ask for my Windows 98 CD. I hope so.

I wouldn’t make such a fuss about this if it weren’t for the $100 difference between the FULL and UPGRADE versions of WinXP Pro.

    • Thanks for the quick reply, Bob.

I haven’t been able to find any definitive information on this type of situation on Microsoft’s site. Only thing that comes close is KB article 307993, which says that the upgrade-only version of WinXP “looks” for qualifying products to upgrade.

    • Thanks, Mary. I’ll check into it tomorrow.

    • in reply to: Removing Office 97 (Office 97 Professional SR-1) #555962

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven’t really done much customization of my settings on either installation of Office. I may go ahead and uninstall Office 97 per the KB articles and see how Office 2000 functions then.

I don’t have enough experience backing up only my data files and then reinstalling Windows after a format. Otherwise, I would follow your suggestion. I do daily differential backups, so the Office 97 files (and all of the patches and service releases for Windows 98) are still on my backup CD-RWs (I back up everything once a week.). And there is no way I can selectively restore specific files using my current version of Backup Exec. It’s either all or nothing.

I’ll post back with the results when I offload Office 97. Thanks again for your prompt reply.

      Regards.
