Lots of good information here.  First off, the post above about the EnclosureType yields a result of 10 indicating Notebook.  I would say this is pretty close to what this mini PC is.

Now the next post about the Platform Role is full of a lot of great information from the included links.  Unfortunately, this is all way above my head.  I have no idea what “These values are read from the Preferred_PM_Profile field of the Fixed ACPI Description Table (FADT)” is/means.  Following the explanations from the various links doesn’t help me as I don’t know (understand) where, or how, these commands are executed to reveal anything.  But, the bottom line, are these values user definable?

One more thing.  Powered up the mini PC today, and now I see seven items in the Action Center.  Present are: All Settings, Network, Connect, Bluetooth (showing the keyboard ID), Location, Nearby Sharing, and Screen Snip.  Gone are the Airplane Mode, and Mobile Hotspot, now!

<i>Mrs Gump always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”  </i>How true!

Interesting article, but it does not address the issue of how to convert the Platform Role from Mobile to Desktop, but instead digresses into discussion about drivers.  But I’m glad to see I’m not alone trying to decipher this enigma.

This author states “even though my HP laptop”, indicating to me that indeed, in this situation, his Platform Role being Mobile, is correct.  One of the definitions of a Mobile device in this capacity is one that uses a battery, which this laptop would.  The author is also confusing the issue by conflating “mobile phone” with the Platform Role “Mobile”.  To the best of my knowledge, which admittedly is limited, Platform Role can only be Mobile or Desktop.

Still hold out hope someone out there can shed more light on this subject and determine if, and how, this parameter can be modified.  But every little bit of information helps, so thanks for this link.

I’ll keep looking, but I doubt that is the issue.  This PC is connected to a TV set as a monitor and the PC can sit idle for half a day or more at times when the TV is used to watch TV, with no effect on the Bluetooth keyboard.  The fail to function is far less prevalent to make me think that it would be just the device falling asleep.  And I also think any device that goes into sleep mode would recover when PC activity is resumed, and not require a device to be deleted and reinstalled to function again, after going onto a sleep mode.

But, then again, this is Windows.

    • in reply to: Platform Role – Bluetooth Keyboard issue #2378368

There are five sub categories under Bluetooth in Device Manager and I went through each and every one of the entries and looked at each of the tabs.  Found nothing akin to sleep mode in any tab of all the five sub categories under Bluetooth.

But it sounded like a worthwhile exercise.

Yes, I believe you are correct, the differences must be in the build version.

Any idea what is going on with the “Platform Role” thing?  Do you think this can be changed to Desktop? And how?

    • in reply to: Platform Role – Bluetooth Keyboard issue #2378351

Okay, this is going to sound really dumb, but I can’t figure out how to expand the Action Center as you suggest to 12, try as I might!  How is this done, please.

Click on the word Expand at top left of the row of four icons.

There is no “Expand” at the top of the action window, but realizing there is only three items residing in the action window now, this makes sense to me.

But back to one of my original concerns, that of being this “Platform Role” displaying in System Information.  I see “Mobile”, but I think I should (like to) see “Desktop”!

      Can anyone address this issue?

      Thanks all

Not sure what the “it” is in your statement, Add it here?

Going into Settings, APP, there is no Devices selection.

Going to Settings, Bluetooth & other devices, I checked a previously unchecked item, “Show notifications to connect using Swift Pair”.  Now, I have no idea what this does/means, but it changed nothing.  Still only see the three items in the Action Area: WiFi, Airplane Mode, and Mobile Hotspot.

      Thanks

As yes, the Bluetooth keyboard does show up in Devices, and Bluetooth shows up as enabled, but the keyboard fails to function until deleted and reinstalled.

      Thanks for the feedback.

    • in reply to: Corrupt recycle bin in Windows XP? #1525122

I am experiencing a problem very similar. On an old XP desktop system I have the original drive that now servers as a secondary drive, used to archive data. Recently went through deleting as many files as I could to make room for the large amount of pictures I wanted to archive. When I went to empty the recycle bin all the files disappeared but I got an error message “Error Deleting File or Folder” Cannot remove folder Df899: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

There are no visible files in the recycle bin and the folder view is set to show all hidden files and folders. A search for “Df899” yields a folder Df899 with a path of: F:RECYCLERS-1-21-3327……………… on and on.

Tried the “attrib –s –h recycler” thing above, system took a very long time to restart, constant disk churn and a message that an update was being installed and not to turn off the computer. Several minutes later the system restarted and nothing changed.

If I go to F:RECYCLER I can see the “S-1-21-3327……………… on and on”. If I right click and choose Properties, General, I see the file is check as Read-only. When I uncheck that and click apply, the check mark disappears until I check the properties again and see the the Read-only checked again. Of course deleting the file here again yields the same error message.

It is not crucial that I rectify this, but I would like to clear out this issue if I can. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

Don’t know of any player that will address your concerns but I can offer this. I have the same issue when we get family videos sent to us and all I do is use the “Free Video Flip and Rotate” program to rotate and save the .mov file. This is a free application. Not a fix for your problem but a simple workaround.

Your link to the article confirms what I suspected was going to happen with Comcast here. I expect things may get worse before they could ever get better though since we will be under the “Spinco” until Charter takes over later. So it will be interesting. From what I can find, Charter does a somewhat better job of providing reliable and faster internet service, but only marginal. With the strangle hold these cable providers have over us it’s hard to be optimistic about a better outcome soon.

No chance of getting FIOS here. Expansion of fiber networks to the home has died here, as it has most places. Our market here (our community) is just not quite big enough to see a lot of innovation or investment. Thanks for the link.

    • in reply to: Improving Internet speed #1454761

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, my choices are limited to Frontier and Comcast. Satellite is ridiculously expensive and has even more ridiculous data limits. So, no, my choices are quite limited. Comcast doesn’t work right and Frontier is too slow. And to rub salt into this wound, two houses away FIOS is available. Looks like my only real option is to move to South Korea where they really know how to do data!

A couple of months ago I did install a cable modem from our cable service provider as a trial. Advertised upload speed was 25 and speed tests often yielded results as high as 35. It varied from time to time, and at busy periods was no faster than 15-17. Still plenty of bandwidth to use two computers at the same time and view full HD videos.

But all was not rosy. My wife has several foreign language programs she likes to view using a media play that originate from South Korea. Needless to say there is quite a bit of latency going all the way over there from where we are here so we see video buffering from time to time. And surprising enough, it was worse on the cable modem service provider. Had techs on site a couple of times and worked with the second level technical support several times but could not get the service to improve. With the DSL we get buffering but after a pause the video would resume. With the cable modem, all too often when the buffering would start, the video would freeze – permanently, requiring a reload to resume the video.

The cable modem went back. Hated to see it go because every other activity was so much faster but the video buffering and freezing was just too much to take. The cable modem was cheaper, especially when one compares the speed to cost, but I hear rumblings that the cable company may soon put data limits on their internet service and overages could get really expensive. Probably stick with the slow DSL and continue to complain.

No solution, but a bit of info on my recent experience, for what it’s worth. I have DSL through Frontier Communications (US-Indiana) and some time ago a tech came and replaced my out of date modem. At that time he ran a line test at the modem and told me my line would support a download speed of 6.6. At the time I was on a rate for 3 down and the office was not quite ready to support speeds greater than 3. A bit later the tariff changed an we all paid for an “up to” speed of 7.

I called and requested my service be upgraded to 7. And it was. Testing I got a solid 6.0 down. But there times when the modem would just not sync at the highest speed and my speed would fall back to really slow speeds, so I reported it. The tech suggested that provisioning my line for a rate of 5 could make the connection more stable and that may solve my fallback issue. It work well – got consistent download speeds of 5.0. Would have preferred to have the 6.0 speed over 5.0 that was consistent, but this was a reasonable compromise.

Or so I thought. Several days after the speed was reduced to 5 and I was having no issues, I got a call from the tech who had been working on my service telling me that “engineering” told him that my line did not support speeds greater than 3 and he had to set my line back to 3 down. I was not happy – paying for 7 down and now only allowed 3!

Over the following months I had Frontier tech support run line tests on my line with the results always being 6.6 except for a single result of 7.2. Contacted customer service on several occasions complaining about my internet speed and several times customer service agreed that I should be able to get my line provisioned for the 7 down speed and issued orders to do so. But that always followed with a call from a local tech telling me again my line would not support speeds greater than 3 – the same line that tested for 6.6 and actually ran at 6.0 and 5.0 before.

The last time I was in contact with Frontier over another matter, that once resolved, was asked if there was anything else. Of course never wanting to miss an opportunity to voice my displeasure with my internet connection speed issue, I again relayed the long story of my quest to get the speed I was paying for. The difference this time was that I was speaking with an honest representative. I now learned that my speed, and all others that worked out of that same serving office, has had their speed capped at 3 down because the office is under provisioned.

Now the point of this now way to long rambling. Your line and office probably support a greater speed than you are allowed to have. That is what Frontier has done to me. Reduced the speed of my DSL service because they do not have enough capacity to serve the customers who are paying for, and not receiving the speed they deserve.
