    • in reply to: MSE vs Avast? #1340045

MSE will display a different icon if the virus and malware data are out of date.

I guess my point though is that Avast is never out of date, because it’s always updating itself. This image just reinforces my thoughts that I have to keep vigilant when using MSE. With Avast, I don’t have to think about it.

That did the trick! Thanks so much.

Freemake Video Converter always works for YouTube and often works for other supported sites.

    • in reply to: alternate keyboard locked on in WLM #1297322

      UPDATE:
The problem kept occurring at random intervals, and not just in WLM, but in all programs, but not all at the same time. After much discussion with Acer tech support, I figured out the solution.
I didn’t have the keyboard thingy displayed on my taskbar, for one thing (which is why Joe’s solution above did not work).
I went into the Control Panel, Region and Language, Keyboards and Languages and clicked on Change Keyboards. Although “US” was set as default (and always has been, even when the alternate characters were showing up), there were other keyboards listed. I simply deleted those other keyboards, leaving “US” as the only keyboard. This was a month ago and I have not had the problem since.
      Sheesh.

    • in reply to: WLM – deleted email still in Inbox #1285532

Thanks Ted. The point I was trying to make is that I don’t use any of Microsoft’s online services and I didn’t think I needed to sign in to anything. The search I did for Windows Live Sign In Manager indicated it was needed for Messenger and, as in your case, some other Microsoft online services. I didn’t think I needed to sign in just to use a Microsoft program, independent of their online services. Obviously I do. How else are they going to track me? :p

As a bit of an update to my solution, it turns out all you have to do is mark the message as read. The Delete button works just fine after that. (Saves the steps of right-clicking and choosing the Deleted Items folder.)

    • in reply to: WLM – deleted email still in Inbox #1285300

OK, I played around with this a bit and found this solution:

Right-click each stubborn email and Mark as Read.
Right-click and Move to Folder: Deleted Items.

      Done!

So simple, if ya know how.

It won’t move the email if it is not marked as read.

Empty the Deleted Items folder and it’s gone. Yay! 🙂

Thanks for looking, and I hope this will help the next over-ambitious person with this problem.

    • in reply to: WLM Attachment Security #1285064

I’m still working on the new language of WLM. The pictures are attachments. Click the paper clip. Rather, as the test emails I have been sending myself, just dragging the image icon from the Desktop to the email message.
On receipt, there is the row of thumbnails across the top of the message. Double-clicking the thumbnail launches it without issue. Right-click and Save As or Save All results in the “protected” file.
I just saved an inline photo from an email and tried to open it and it opened without the security warning, so it seems only attached images have this issue.
Also a bit of weirdness is your menu. I don’t have that style of menu. Maybe this is an option that you have changed from the default, but I wonder if you are using “Windows Mail” and not “Windows Live Mail”? Or maybe you are using an earlier version of WLM from the one I am using (2011)?

    • in reply to: WLM Attachment Security #1284729

I don’t login at all. I simply imported all my email accounts from OE to WLM. (I haven’t gotten around to trying to connect my Hotmail account.)

It doesn’t matter if I send the image file through my ISP or through my gmail account, either way, I get that security box.
      28254-Image3

Here’s the really bizarre part: If I save the file to my Desktop and try to open it, I get that message. However, if I double-click the attachment in the email, it opens it without the warning!

Since you never get that warning, I am beginning to wonder if it is WLM or something else?

I use Avast as my anti-virus, but I have the email scanner function turned off.
The only other security I have always on is whatever Windows comes with, including the firewall. I don’t use a third-party firewall and other malware-type scanners I don’t have constantly running.
Any ideas what is holding me up?

In your image, you have the second checkbox checked. I have it unchecked. And I guess I should have mentioned that I did also change the buttons that you have outlined. I switched it to Internet zone, Apply and also restarted WLM, but no difference.

    • in reply to: alternate keyboard locked on in WLM #1284015

Thanks Joe, I will keep that in mind.
Between my post and your response, I tried something I should have tried before: I restarted WLM. It works fine now.

I wish I would have thought of that before, but hopefully this almost pointless thread will help the next baffled user.

      Thanks again!

    • in reply to: Can’t open more than 15 files #1283357

      Success!

Yes, I had already double-checked the spelling and the path and all that. But it never occurred to me that “16” would not mean “unlimited”, as the article says, and I didn’t come across that post.

“500” works excellent. I doubt I will ever need to open more than that at once! 🙂

      Thank you!!!

    • in reply to: Windows Games cheats! #1225614

Tried the cheat for Solitaire and Freecell in Win7 64. They don’t do anything.
I guess these cheats are for XP?

Nope, doesn’t work in XP either….
