      Thanks, Ted.

Yes, “C” holds my OS and “D” if for my data. The “Backup Set 2011-12-18 190002” holds 3 folders:

“Backup Files 2011-12-18 190002” which has 24 large zip files in it, and
“Backup Files 2011-12-25 190002” which has 4 large zip files in it, and
“Catalogs” which tells me “You don’t currently have permission to access this folder” but if I click “Continue” I see one file: “GlobalCatalog.wbcat” of 7,678Kb.

This won’t help you with the current question, hodget, but might be useful info FOR CANADIANS. I have been getting the FREE income software to do my taxes for 3 or 4 years from http://www.studiotax.com and as a retired tax-man, you can take my word for it that it is VERY GOOD. And totally free. I’m not aware of a U.S. version.

June 20, 2011 at 12:17 pm in reply to: desktop icons: why do they move? #1284390

OH, Tinto Tech; if I had realized it would make a difference, I would have mentioned that I DO HAVE an external monitor plugged in. I use it AND the lappy’s monitor. But I have not made changes to the screen resolution and the external one has been in use for a very long time. I’ve never looked at the Event Viewer before and really have no idea how to use it. I have it running but cannot see how to do anything with it.

Thanks, Dick-Y; no it is not checked. I can drag/drop icons all over, no problem.

I have “Demanded” that Facebook DELETE ALL my information, EVERYTHING, but they will not. They should not take that approach; I wish I had never started with Facebook.

Thanks for that, Ted. When I told “Don” that I was posting the question here, he dug into it as well and found the problem. Here is what he wrote:

“Yes, I use Eudora 7 and found a full *explanation* here: http://ask-leo.com/why_do_i_get_odd_characters_instead_of_quotes_in_my_documents.html
One of the comments there said:
Very helpful article which enabled me to understand and resolve the problem for my wife who is still using Eudora 7.

For those still using “old” Eudora, there’s a nice free plugin that will convert received UTF-8 emails to ISO-8859-1 which is what Eudora understands. You can even put a button for the plugin in the button bar so it’s easy to use when you hit a message with odd characters.
      It’s at: http://www.windharp.de/software/utf8iso.htm “
