Are you using the L O N G version of Scandisk? If not, try that.

      If that doesn’t work try:
      Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information.
Then click on Tools. There are several things there you can try, like :
      Internet Explorer Repair Tool
      System File Checker
      Registry Checker
      ScanDisk
      And
      Version Conflict Manager

None of these things will hurt anything, and may fix something that is “out of place”.

Since sending ATT tech support a message about this problem I was having, the Online Mailbox has changed. ( Completely new login screen too.) I do not know if this fixed the “Reply” button changing the address, but everyhing else on the site is working a lot better today. .As soon as I try this with the two addresses that were having the trouble, I’ ll keep you informed.

      Texas cheers

I have always had the PTSnoop running in the background when I connect by phone line (for text calls also). Out of curiosity, because of this question, I stopped this (Ctrl/alt/del/end…) and it caused my machine to freeze. Had to press the power button to turn it off, nothing would work after stopping this.( ctrl/esc and ctrl/alt/del pressed twice did nothing.) Restarted the machine and stopped the PTsnoop again (cont/alt/del/end…) and then , when the machine tried to go to sleep, it would freeze and not respond. Gave an error message about a program not letting Windows start the screen saver. I have NOT tried to stop it again, and it is still working fine. I also have PCTel HSP56 Micromodem. (Original Equiupment). Have updated Anti-Virus and scanned, shows no virus.

Funny that I just had the same thing happen. When I would try to collapse the open menu in Windows Explorer, it would re-open and I would have to click the “x” at least twice to get it closed. I tried the Internet Explorer Repair Tool and it seems to have fixed whatever it was that caused this to happen. I noticed this after changing my Desktop Wallpaper to a pic I had in MGI PhotoSuite. This is not the first time MGI has caused a problem when I tried to use a pic as a desktop background. To run the Repair Tool, go to:

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Tooks/Internet Explorer Repair Tool . After restarting, click keep current settings to make things the same as they were before the repair. brainwash

    • in reply to: Printing problems #593368

I have used a Xerox XK35C Print /Scan/ Copier (Parallel connection) for 2 1/2 years. Had nothing but problems with it from the get go. I left the power turned on all the time with that machine, Did not dare to try something so bold as turning it on after the computer was already on. Had to reinstall it about once a month. Xerox Techs could not offer any advice other than reinstall. I did use their latest drivers and tricks just to make it work.

Last week I bought a new Cannon S900. (I wanted a good photo printer anyway). It is a USB-ONLY connection. Doesn’t even have a parallel port. Have not had a single problem with the Cannon. It even has a built in power saver feature that will turn the printer off after (X) number of minutes, and turn it back on automatically when you want to print something. You decide how long to have it stay on before it shuts off automatically. Or you can use the power button. It did cost a bit more, but with individual ink tanks for each color, the ink cost so much less, the savings in ink cost will pay for the printer. groovin

      OOPPS!

I misread the post. I thought (at first) that prior to that date all files of this type would open.. I *ass u me d ” (incorrectly) that meant no files like that would open now. But if the ones recieved before the date in question will still open, I stand corrected. Thanks for bringing the error to my attention.

    • in reply to: date and time #591900

My computer’s clock has ALWAYS run fast, since the first day I owned it. I have had this over two years, and every day, the time would gain a couple minutes on the clock. I recently went to the NIST website and downloaded a utulity for free that will check and set your computer clock to the atomic clock. I have mine set up so it is manually activated. I think you can set it up to automatically check and set the clock . I just click on the icon Under * Start * and it will check the atomic clock (Several sites to choose from) and automatically set the computer clock. If you do this, be sure to print out the instructions so you can set it up correctly the first time.

It takes a few minutes to set the thing up, but once you get it set up right, it is easy, fast, and best of all, it is free…

I had the battery replaced once and this had no effect on the clock.

I read somewhere that overclocking will cause the computer clock to run fast. Don’t know anything about how to check or change this setting myself.

Just do a search for NIST and look at the web site if interested.

      In reference to ileacy’s post:

      _____________________________________________________________________________

2)Use a permanent swap file with Min and Max set to 3 times real memory (3*64=204).
      _____________________________________________________________________________

      (1) Do you mean to set BOTH the Min and Max to the same value?
      _____________________________
….. three times the real memory….=204.
      _____________________________

      (2) How do you actually set the swap file size, and does setting it like this make it permanent?

      (3) Last, I now have 312 mb memory, so according to this formula, I should set my swap file to 936kb?

The reason I ask about this is because I added some extra memory (256kb) since the price is (was) down considerably, and noticed immediately that when I click on the “C” drive in an “Open” box to find a file, it now takes 5-7 seconds for the list to open. The machine is faster in about every other way, just this one thing is slower now. I don’t recall changing any swap file settings, and mabe I was supposed to change this with the extra memory.

PS….I went into the startup folder in dos (f8 at restart) and stopped McAfee from starting automatically, and just manually use it with downloaded files. This alone made this machine four times faster than it was.

      Thanks for any advice. bow

Mabe you downloaded and opened something that changed the default program (accidentally) that is supposed to open that type file. Did you see a checked box saying something like,

” Always use this program to open this type file”

      Just before the problem started?

This has happened to me several times with photo programs, and had to manually change back to the make the original program the default again. crossfingers

Edited by WyllyWylly on 27-May-02 03:31.

      Go to:
      http://outpost.com[/url%5D ( Fry’s Electronics Online store )
Click the button for software, In the empty box search for “Windows 98 SE” and it will show it there in the list. Upgrade is $89.95, full edition is $179.95. You may be able to order it online from them. (if you are in the USA or know someone here to buy it for you. I don’t know if they will ship overseas.)

PS: if you do upgrade, be sure to go to the Windows Update Site (Click Start, Windows Update) and get ALL the security updates, it will take a bit of time, but if you don’t, there are too many security holes in the packaged version.

I noticed no one ever said to run System File Checker. Probably too late, after the re-install,
but it won’t hurt to try.

      From the desktop click:
      /Start
      /Programs
      /Accessories
      /System Tools
      /System Information
At the top of the page click :
      /Tools
In the drop down box click :
      /System File Checker
      /Scan for altered files

It will start a scan of the system files and stop when it comes across anything that has changed since the last time this was done.

Note 1: (You should do this every time you install something new to update the system info).

Note 2: This is what you should have done as soon as you realized you deleted the wrong thing while just messin’ around.)

It will ask for the location to restore from, and if you have the CD select the CD Drive letter
(D: or E: usually) and then try to find the file in your windows CD. There is at least one file in here that will change every day and that is normal, I think it just updates the date, but if you see something related to your sound, try to restore the original file. In fact if you deleted something you should not have, try to restore any changed files the first time to see if this fixes it. If nothing you try works………………………… fire

      /Control Panel
      /System
      /Device Manager tab
/Click the + beside the item to update driver
      /Hi-light item in list
      /Click Properties
      /Click Driver Tab
      /Click update driver
/Check box for Search Windows Update Site
Go from there to try to find a driver on the web.
Mabe it was just something that I had but that worked for me once; It’s worth a try. bummer

Yes, this is something a Telecommunications Specialist would have to answer, and I am not such a person myself. I have gotten a lot of great tips from this site, and thought someone out there might have gone through this before. I know this machine will do the thing I want to do, because I have accidentally done it twice. Just not able to reproduce the result when I want to. Can’t figure out what it was that I did to make it connect and work. I will probably end up buying yet another program that is supposed to do that job. If you want to see more info about Telecommunications (and other) products for People with various Disabilities, you could check out a site by UltraTec. They make the TDD that I use now. They also sell a modem/software package, but it slows down the transmission speed to 45.5 baud, and this will not work with computers using ASCII code, but will only work with other TDD devices that are the same baud rate. They have some things anyone might find useful, like a box that puts the Caller I.D. Name/Number on a TV screen, if you have the service in your area. The technology available today just amazes me.

My quest is to be able to use this computer to call other computers in a text mode. bow

In Windows 98, under “Other” “Finds and Wants” the post is “Point to Point Text Calls”. This is where someone else said for me to post this question. cheers
