    • in reply to: Networking breaks after install of 24H2 #2744307

      Thank you for your post!

In my case upgrading to 24H2 was a disaster, no internet. The problem was that none of the suggestions worked for me, the services were already correct.

I disabled the DNS Cache service when I installed Windows 11 22H2 Home in 2023 and thought recently that enabling it might solve the problem. I feel confident that this is it, but I will still wait to upgrade.

    • in reply to: 23H2 to 24H2 Feature Update causes no internet #2728033

That is the problem, none of those issues existed on 24H2 in my case. I have a clean basic system so there is nothing for me to do, like try uninstalling whatever. On the third upgrade cycle I checked everything and they were all set right, the same as they were on 23H2, and that is why I am stumped and worried. My main desire was to make noise about this issue, because it is major and the fixes don’t work for me. I am not going to let it get me down, I am going to enjoy Christmas and wait for this issue to get resolved.

Windows 11 Home, wired ethernet. Custom built tower PC. No problems at all for 2 years until 24H2. I didn’t think of checking the Event Logs. I have installed StartAllBack, that’s it, no VPN or Bitlocker. I have never had a problem with the internet before, XP, Vista, 7, 10, it always just works. I’m back on 23H2 now so the internet problem is over, it is only there on 24H2. I think it has something to do with tightening security in Windows that 24H2 does. Thank you for trying to help.

I did it 3 times. Upgrade, roll back, upgrade again with new info, roll back, upgrade again with a week of gathered intel and roll back. Maybe the event logs are still there?

Update, this is the only relevant error I could find:
      Event ID: 10142
      Source: Windows Remote Management
The WinRM service cannot migrate the listener with Address * and Transport HTTP. A listener that has the same Address and Transport configuration already exists.

I think this is exactly what you are looking for. I use WinSetView to set my folder views now. It took me a bit of study to learn how to use it.

      Thanks for the reply.

I didn’t list the things I’d tried because I did them all. Reset modem, restarted, checked registry settings, changed dns settings. I even checked the ASUS site for new drivers but I have all of the new “important” ones from December 2024 installed already. I also sent a post in Feedback Hub for the very first time. There is nothing wrong on my end, 23H2 works fine. I need Microsoft to fix this. I am genuinely worried about the future of Windows.

I found this website by accident recently and thought I’d let you know.

      Ruffle (Online Flash Player) (2024)
      https://ruffle.rs/

You can download an executable to run swf files too.

    • My mistake.

When I installed Windows 11 I used my hotmail address, but said no to the rest, and was never asked to enter my user name.

When the desktop appeared my user name was t****, taken from my email address (***) not Troy as I would have set it.

I don’t think I can change it now, can I?

    • in reply to: Can you use a free password manager, or must you pay? #2639890

I keep my logins in a text file to copy and paste because long complex passwords are too difficult for me to enter manually. I keep the file on 2 encrypted flash drives that I insert when needed and eject when done, (the second is a backup copy). Is this a good practice?

    • in reply to: KB5034441 has led us astray, in a horrible way #2631113

The Event Viewer lists 3 errors, Event ID 4502, on each of these WU dates:
      2023-11-15
      2023-12-13
      2024-01-09

      And says this:
      Starting Windows Recovery Environment servicing.
      Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed.

    • in reply to: KB5034441 has led us astray, in a horrible way #2630372

This error happened to me on my newly built Windows 11 PC (April 2023).

After this story first broke I checked Event Viewer and found “WinREAgent” eventid 4502

I spent many hours over several days trying to make sense of this mess.

There were files on the root of the Windows partition (C:) for the Recovery update, I don’t have the names because I deleted them after rebuilding the Recovery Partition, but copied the file “update.wim” to C:\Windows\System32\Recovery

      The partition was 650 MB.

      I disabled it: reagentc /disable

then resized it to 1 GB

then used diskpart with help from here: https://christitus.com/reagentc-windows-recovery-partition/

      then re-enabled it: reagentc /enable

Now the Recovery Partition is updated and ready for future Windows updates.

      Hello Mat,

The Sound Recorder in pre-Vista systems is limited to 60 seconds.
There is a workaround to increase the length in 60 second increments:
      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/82215

      See:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_Recorder_(Windows)

      Hello raydiek,

      I’ve been using CheckDisk GUI,
“CheckDiskGUI is an Graphical User Interface for the commandline version of chkdsk.exe”
      http://www.wieldraaijer.nl/

It shows the same output as seen in the Event Viewer in its own display window.

    • in reply to: Changing the default application for shell Open #1281331

This is the tweak to open unknown files with Notepad:

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*shell]

      [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*shellopen]
      @=”Open With Notepad”

      [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*shellopencommand]
      @=”C:\Windows\notepad.exe %1″

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.]
      “Application”=”Notepad”

To remove the tweak, delete these keys:

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*shellopen]
      [-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts.]

      I have Paint.NET 3.5.5 on Windows XP SP3.

These are the “extra” files that I don’t need or want on my clean system:
