    • in reply to: Update to Adobe’s latest DC Reader? #1538151

A month or so ago I installed DC Reader and found it no longer showed a little window in the bar at the top that let me type in a % number to adjust the reading qualities of the document. I have always picked my own resolution, and often chose something like 88% rather than what I’m offered – say 75% or 100%. No doubt if I had a touchscreen I could easily deal with this by swipe methods, but none of my four computers have one. I gave DC one day, then uninstalled it. Adobe no longer seemed to offer 11 (I didn’t know of the link offered above) so I had to find another download site. I won’t try DC again till I hear they’ve replaced the sizing option I prefer.

    • in reply to: Eudora OSE server problem #1484784

“I would go through each email program and make sure that none of them are set to remove mail from the server for the primary email account.”

In fact I have just moved, or rather duplicated, 4 of my 5 accounts into Eudora OSE from an ancient Eudora prog – 6.1. When new mail comes in I can open it in either program. If I open it in Eudora OSE I can read it OK, but if I then open Eudora 6.1 the messages disappear from OSE, and also from the server. The primary account as far as Comcast is concerned is and has been on OSE and only OSE all along. Mail to that account works fine, is removed from the server, and remains visible in OSE. Mail to the other 4 accounts is not removed from the server unless I open it in 6.1. I’m just baffled. Why would a message I’ve already opened and read simply disappear from the OSE program?

Thanks for the advice. I ended up installing my old pre-OSE Eudora, which works just fine on Win 7-64, to my mild surprise. But your suggestion sounds like a good one, and I may try it.

We discussed her AV program. She’s using a version of Norton provided by our ISP. It has been a constant source of problems for her, but she doesn’t want to switch because in her experience Norton is the only one that prevents her system from getting infected.

I had a bizarre problem that turned out to be related to Norton Security Suite, as offered free by Comcast (Windows Explorer crashed whenever I right-clicked on a file, or tried any file operation) which I finally solved by uninstalling Norton with the removal tool available online. Your problem may be unrelated to Norton Security Suite, but if like so many it is (I helped a neighbor with a different problem by getting rid of NSS), there is no way to find out but de-installation. Merely disabling it probably won’t help diagnosis – it didn’t in my case.

I use Avast’s free edition these days and have had no problems.

Like Charles Phillips I have had this problem seemingly caused by Norton (possibly triggered by a Windows update), and solved it by the use of the Norton removal tool. Of course if you have never installed Norton on your machine this will be of no help to you.

    • in reply to: Right-click on Any file crashes Explorer #1254870

I started this thread some months ago and nothing I tried worked, till I was confronted with a seemingly unrelated problem on a friend’s Acer laptop. He too had Norton Security Suite installed (a free version of the Symantec product offered to Comcast customers) and couldn’t get online. I couldn’t uninstall his Norton using the uninstall feature or using the Windows add/remove. So I downloaded the Norton removal tool to a thumb drive plugged into my Acer (for some reason Windows Explorer retained its functions on removable drives), ran it on my friend’s machine and found I could get him connected to the web again. This gave me an idea.

One of the few things I hadn’t tried in order to fix my own machine was to uninstall the Norton Security Suite. I had tried running in Safe Mode with Norton disabled, and more or less decided NSS had nothing to do with my Windows Explorer problem. But in a spirit of experimentation I uninstalled Norton Security Suite and my problem was fixed!! Explorer had all its file functions back, so I could cut and paste, delete, create shortcuts and all the rest. Very satisfying!

I installed the free version of Avast on both my friend’s computer and my own, and resolved that the next time Comcast offers me a gift horse, I’ll skip the oral/dental examination and just refuse to give it room in my stables.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ran Norton AV in Safe mode and this time it found trojan.backdoor, trojan.graybird, and trojan horse. Norton claimed it dealt with them, but Windows Explorer was still useless. I ran System Restore in Safe Mode and this time it completed: still no Explorer file functions. I’m suspecting more and more that there’s some unreachable virus though I can’t figure out where I got it. I’m a couple of updates behind on Adobe Reader and Flash, so maybe one of those new exploits nabbed me, but I can’t think where. I don’t go to iffy sites and I don’t use this computer for emails.

I used to make system images on all my machines till my USB external drive died a couple of months ago. Shame on me for not replacing it right away, I guess. Anyway, thanks for your help, and if anybody else has any ideas, by all means offer them.
      Thanks.

…one of the first programs I will install is Webshots. Of course I will have to install the wallpapers again because I don’t know how to transfer them from one computer to the other.

      Gloria

Webshots installs a folder called Webshots Data in your My Documents folder, or whatever they may call it in Windows 7. This includes album folders that contain all your current pix. Just copy the Webshots Data folder to a flash drive and transfer it after you’ve installed Webshots on your new machine. Or copy and paste the album folders inside into the new Webshots Data folder.
