      Thanks, removing the blank line at the top of the source was enough to fix it.

      I keep the navigation pane visible, and simply tick the other calendar’s check box if I want to see it, clear the check box if I want to hide it. The calendar will be displayed side by side with my own calendar. (Outlook 2007 also has the capability to overlay the two calendars).

      Yep, I guess it’s a personal preference thing. Perhaps the best solution to my problem is to create a custom button on the toolbar and write the VBA to display my calendar and hide any others that are selected. A nice little Friday challenge

      Isn’t there a check box in Other Calendars in the navigation pane on the left hand side to turn the calendar on and off?

      Yes, but I tend to operate with the navigation pane minimised most of the time, so to view (just) my calendar I have to:

        [*]restore the navigation pane
        [*]scroll to my calendar and check the box to show it
        [*]scroll to the other user’s calendar and uncheck its box
        [*]minimise the navigation pane

      – so that’s 4 clicks and sometimes two bits of scrolling through the list of calendars in the navigation pane just to see my own calendar!

    • in reply to: Databases on web sites – some basic questions #1161351

      Ok …

      I do have a cPanel control centre and that lists MySQL databases. I will have to have a closer look at that and see what it can tell me about setting up my database.

      The raw data that I have is currently supplied to me as .xls files so I shouldn’t have any trouble converting and / or populating.

      And budget?? What’s that? Half joking. This is for a running group that relies on people donating time to get things done. So in those terms, the budget is only limited by my enthusiasm. I will still investigate those options you mentioned. Thank you.

      Johanna

      The cPanel should give you direct access to your databases too, either via phpMyAdmin [which is good] or webmin [which is less good] or perhaps something else; these usually have an upload from CSV option, so you can use Excel to save your xls files to CSV and then upload without needing a local copy of MySQL. If you do want a local copy though, I also would recommend XAMPP.

      Perhaps at least the Lounge itself is notable.

      The point about being written about in a reliable source is interesting. That means that to qualify to be included in Wikipedia, a topic has to be written about somewhere else first. Wikipedia could, on that basis, never be the first to write about something.

      Ian

      Yes, that is indeed Wikipedia policy – Wikipedia does not publish original research or original thought. It does have sister projects for such things, like Wikinews (a project to create a multilingual free content dictionary in every language), Wikibooks (aims to build a collection of free e-book resources, including textbooks, language courses, manuals, and annotated public domain books), Wikisource (a collection of texts that could be distributed as free and open content) and Wikiversity (a project dedicated to learning materials and learning communities, as well as research). More details here.

    • in reply to: WOPR? #1159566

      Wikipedia being what it is, you could write entries on those topics if you wanted to.

      …but you would have to be sure to establish that they clearly satisfy the notability guidelines. While Woody may be a prolific writer, has anybody published a book or journal article about him in a reliable source?

    • in reply to: Javascript functions and NOSCRIPT HTML command #1159565

      If I remember correctly, Jefferson and/or Joe helped me well over a year ago to extract the information from the Javascript code generated by the EnkoderForm email obfuscation mechanism and bundle a number of these functions into a file.

      Let me say a bit more.

      I have a file called (say) Stuff.js which contains functions of the form

      function NameOne()
      {var kode=

      ;}

      function NameTwo()
      {var kode=

      ;}

      and so on.

      In my HTML webpage I have, between and

      and within the main body of the webpage I call the functions to give the names/email addresses

      Please contact NameOne();
      or NameTwo();

      My question is: How can I put a / pair into each function in the Stuff.js file, so that, if the user has scripting turned off by some means, they will see something like
      NameOne’s email address is not visible unless you turn scripting on.

      Hope that makes (some) sense…

      Thanks

      You would have to put the noscript tags in the body, where you call the NameOne etc. functions:

      Please contact NameOne();NameOne’s email address is not visible unless you turn scripting on
      or NameTwo();NameTwo’s email address is not visible unless you turn scripting on

    • in reply to: Suggestions for free FTP software #1159336

      Yep, I agree, Filezilla is the way to go. Some text editors like Notepad++ have some FTP functionality built in, but I’ve found that somewhat limited (when I tried it, it did annoying things like only transferring half a file).

    • in reply to: Between function #1158825

      I can’t find out from Access help exactly how the BETWEEN function works.
      If I set up a condition BETWEEN 1 AND 10, is it the equivalent of “Greater than or equal to 1 AND Less Than or equal to 10” or is it “Greater than 1 AND less than 10”?
      Thanks
      Silverback

      It’s inclusive (ie the former of the two options).

    • in reply to: Does this hosting/editing service exist? #1158487

      Yes, what you’re after is definitely a content management system then. I also recommend Joomla as it’s the one that I’m most familiar with, but there are plenty of others out there too. Might be worth having a look around, a lot of them have online videos or demonstrations that you can play with to help you choose. Wikipedia has a good list of CMSs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_conte…agement_systems

      Note that the CMS and the hosting of the CMS are two different things. A lot of the CMS software is free, but unless you want adverts all over your website you’ll need to pay for hosting. The requirements for which host to choose are dependent on which CMS you go for (or vice versa – you’ll need to choose a CMS that works with your hosting package). There are a number of hosts out there that will give you webspace with Joomla already installed – search for “Joomla hosting” and see what pops up. As with any of these things, read the small print carefully and look around for some independent reviews too.

    • in reply to: Colorful Tabs for Firefox #1158216

      Hello, does anyone use the Colorful Tabs extension. If so, has anyone got it to colour htm files stored on the local computer. I can’t get it to work. I like the idea fo beng able to colour tabs according to the url but can’t get it to work.

      Thanks,

      Chris (Hunt)

      The developer has set up a forum especially for discussing and reporting issues with the extension here. I’ve tried searching that forum and couldn’t find anything relating to local htm files, so perhaps it’s worth posting your question there?

      I did install this extension once but the novelty soon wore off and I uninstalled it within a week or so!

    • in reply to: Facebook – is it safe? #1158215

      My sister apparently just joined Facebook and I got an email asking if I wanted to enroll so I could see her pictures, videos, etc. Is Facebook safe to join? What precautions, if any, should be taken. Thanks for your input.

      “Is Facebook safe?” is a similar question to “Is the internet safe?” – the answer is exactly the same. As long as you’re careful who you share information with (and what you share) and what applications you install, you’ll be absolutely fine. I love Facebook, it’s a brilliant platform and a great way of getting in touch with old friends and keeping in touch with distant friends and family. I would hate to be without it.

    • in reply to: Does this hosting/editing service exist? #1157687

      I’m looking for a system to host my photos along with a goodly amount of text. Basically it will be numerous articles about photography and the specific photographs. I also want a comment system to exchange information with readers.

      What’s important to me is that all the tools to manage the site be on the site. I know I could build my own site using my own software and hosting it, but I something that has limited tools but available right on the site is better for me since I don’t always have access to my PC.

      I’ve been using Google’s Blogspot with unsatisfactory results. While it has some features (commenting and on-line editing), it is much too restricted in how the information is accessed (the only navigation feature is a backward timeline archive of posting). I’ve seen corporate intranet sites that do the trick, but I’ve seen no such thing available to the public.

      So, anyone out there using such a system and can recommend it?

      How much is a “goodly amount” of text? I think Picasaweb (Google photos) gives you about 1024 characters for photo captions, and having had a quick look I couldn’t find mention of any limit at Flickr. I don’t think Picasaweb has the commenting feature you’re after, so I’d try Flickr.

    • in reply to: hide / unhide columns depending on cell value (XL2003) #1157685

      Hello all,

      I want to hide or unhide some columns on a totalsheet depending on a value in a cell on that sheet.
      This cell is the ‘result’ of cells from other sheets. So I was thinking; if the user returns to the totalsheet a procedure is started that wil check the value of the cell and it will hide or unhide the columns.

      Is this prossible, or has someone an beter sollution?

      Greetings,

      Patrick Schcouten
      The Netherlands

      This should probably be in the Excel forum.

      It’s certainly possible – the event procedure you’re after is Worksheet_Activate().
      Something like this should work:
      [codebox]Private Sub Worksheet_Activate()
      Range(“B:E”).EntireColumn.Hidden=False
      Select Case Range(“A1”).value
      Case <100:
      Range("B:B").EntireColumn.Hidden=True
      Range("D:D").EntireColumn.Hidden=True
      Case <50:
      Range("C:C").EntireColumn.Hidden=True
      Case Else:
      Range("E:E").EntireColumn.Hidden=True
      End Select
      End Sub[/codebox]

      eat with left over meat (not recommended for veggies)

      Sound advice there. I’m sure many a vegetarian might have slipped up if you hadn’t included that crucial clause.
      Vegetarians, take note!
