Thanks so much for your efforts to help. I’ll surely investigate the information. I can’t use the Recovery Console though, as it asks for an administrative password and she hasn’t a clue as to what it is. I’ve installed her HD in my computer as a slave and have backed up all her personal data files. etc., and am about ready to reformat and reinstall. But will still investigate the other options as I would hope for an easier solution. …and to learn for the future.
      Thanks again,
      Bill

Sorry Cowboy. Your link gave me the message “The requested URL /xp_sys32.htmL was not found on this server.”
      I’m still interested though.

Thanks kcs. The machine is a Gateway but I’ll check out your suggestion anyway. Maybe it could work on other units beside HP or Compaq.

Thanks guys. I tried all of your suggestions but to no avail. I took a video of the evasive blue screen flash and then freeze framed the shot on playback. It displayed the following:

      STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
      SystemRootSystem32ConfigSOFTWARE
      or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Can this file be restored somehow like setting up the drive as a slave and copying a new file to it or something? Or am I looking at a reformat and reinstall?

Thanks to the both of you. The basic boot disk is what I was looking for but it’s good to know about Leif’s info.

      Bob,
I’ve been looking for a way to make an XP boot disk from XP but haven’t found where yet.. Can you tell me please?
      Thanks,
      Bill

    • Got it working in both! When reviewing my last post I noticed a second quotation mark inserted in the Netscape script after the hidden=. I removed it and now it works.
(I must remember… in cyber-world its the little things that count) (Please just shoot me!)
      Thanks.

    • Thanks Jeff,
The script is just the standard script generated by FP by going to the Page Properties/General tab and browsing to the desired “background sound” file:

This works for IE but not in Netscape.
I have also inserted a second script which I found in an old “Netscape for Dummies” book as follows:

Still didn’t cut it for Netscape.

    • FANTASTIC! Thanks very much, Jolas! It works just as QuickRes did and you saved me a few bucks. Other than this little bug, my video card is otherwise adequate for my usage.
Thanks again! You made my day.

    • Thanks Mark. Please see my reply to “Tricky”

    • I think you’re on the right track Ricky. My card is a S3 Virge DX/GX cheapie and although the driver was found in the XP install, I don’t think it’s totally compatible. It only provides two settings of Medium 16 and High 32 colors. Under ME it provided the whole spectrum from 256 on up. I’m pretty sure the the icon question is related to the card as well. I tried Mark’s advice and installed QuickRes from powertoys and it displayed a screen stating that it couldn’t work unless my monitor could display at least 256 colors. Since a 256 isn’t a current option it probably assumed that there were no higher options either. Anyway, I’m going to try other cards if I have time this weekend and see if any of them provide better results. I’m ready to purchase another card if necessary. Would you mind giving me more details about yours? Thanks alot.

    • Thanks anyway kaplinb, but I’m talking about the previously available (98,ME) taskbar icon that shows the settings in one click only. If you are working in a window other than the desktop, it would take four clicks to access the settings menu in the “standard” method that you described.

      Hi Craig…
I’ve been dealing with this same scenario just today. I don’t know where you’re changing the attributes from but I stumbled across the issue that they have to be changed from the right-side panel of Win Exp. If you change them from the left side it goes through the motions but it won’t hold the new settings. If they’re changed from the right side, the new settings stick. Tried it each way at least six times and it worked for me. Go figure.
      Regards,
      Bill

      Hello Al,
Interesting! I occasionally have the same scenario with my Linksys router but I’m on cable. One difference is that when mine gets “flaky” I can’t even access the router URL. I then have to physically reset the router, then, as you stated, open and close the router URL on one of the computers, and then reboot all the computers to reestablish their internet connections.
