Your advice has always been helpful so I need more information from you.
My d drive is the one that operates the zip disc.
      The cd drive is e.
And, I don’t know what a “root directory” is.
Could you be a little more detailed in your instructions to a barely computer literate old person.
I have another concern, too. The cd-rw I bought at Walmart and installed myself is a Samsung. The install disc that comes with it is a Roxio Easy CD Creator. Yesterday there was a lot of negative feedback about Roxio on the Woody’s Lounge. Now I am a little afraid to use the Easy CD Creator to install the cd-rw. If I install this thing is it going to mess up my machine?
      Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the advice. The temporary internet files was clean except for index.dat. No particular website. It’s happened on several different websites where I have to go to a main page and then click down to the information I want to get at.

I uninstalled WOPR2000 and got my journal entries back. Anybody know why?

Many thanks. The dots are gone.

    • Thanks for your helpful answer.
when I try to insert a document from the scanner into the email message, the document appears on my monitor. However,
when I try to send the INSERTED document, the recipient gets a blank page. I know because I have tried sending the document to myself.
I have scanned, saved to a file, and sent. You are right. The files are too big. I have tried to reduce the size in MS Photo Editor and that doesn’t work. I was trying to figure out how much to reduce the size of the scanned document in order to send it as an attachment in a reasonable amount of time.

    • My email “server” (?) readily takes the attachments I have tried to send.
The question is how do I get the scanned document inserted into the email document so it will stay?
How can I reduce the size of a scanned document or a photograph so it doesn’t take an hour or so to send?
How do I know if I have TWAIN? If I don’t, where do I get it?

    • in reply to: error message (98/se – Office 2000) #611627

I got the message when I was looking up an address in contacts and addressing an envelope using the WOPR enveloper. I got the message when I tried to copy some data from an email I’d saved in one of the Outlook files. I was having trouble getting the copy-paste function to work.
The only problem I could find was Outlook locked up when I tired to close it. I clicked off the error message and it shut down.
Since I posted the problem I ran the “detect and repair” thing and have done some more searching, opening email, sending email and so far the message hasn’t reappeared

    • in reply to: computer shuts down (Office 2000 Professional) #587868

It’s done it when I dialed up from Outlook, from Outlook Express, and when I clicked the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. I don’t remember that it’s ever done it when I dialed up from the icon in Dial Up Networking.
It hasn’t done it for a couple of days. It hasn’t done it often enough for me to identify a pattern. One of the other posts had some information about the Klez virus maybe being the cause. I didn’t think I could get that in Windows 98SE. But, I ran a free virus scan from House Call anti virus and I ran NAV yesterday. Neither of them found any virus.
How about just waiting for it to happen again and try to identify a pattern.?

The only thing new recently was uninstall Office 2000 Professional and then reinstall using a new cd I bought from Microsoft to replace the old cd that was no longer useable. I have NAV which I update at least once a week and have regularly run the virus scan every Saturday night (the old Saturday Night bath idea). NAV hasn’t found a virus for several months. However, I have been getting blank e-mails lately from various unknown people and places, no attachments, and usually a cute subject line. I tried replying to one of them and got an error message ( Recipient of the infected attachment: g_houckInbox
Subject of the message: A IE 6.0 patch
One or more attachments were quarantined.
Attachment taf[1].scr was Quarantined for the following reasons:
Virus W32.Klez.H@mm was found.) that said my reply was infected and was quarantined . . .however I could never find the quarantine location. It wasn’t in NAV quarantine. Now I just delete them.
I use Outlook for email but not the Word thing. I have outlook express on the machine but find it easier to use Outlook because “everything” is in one place.

If I recall correctly, my service person first removed the new driver. Then, he downloaded (old or original) drivers and installed them. The yellow exclamation marks are gone. After that, everything worked. There have been some minor problems but nothing major since.

    • in reply to: Can’t find CD Drives #571459

I took the computer box to my local mechanic and he got rid of the offending driver, restored the other drivers, and did a couple of things I didn’t understand. But, everything works ok again. His advice was to never download drivers from Microsoft again.

    • in reply to: Can’t find CD Drives #570248

Those are the same questions I was hoping one of the Windows 98 experts would answer. Evidently you and I are the only ones who downloaded the driver or we’re the only ones who got hit or we’re the only ones who read these postings.

I also installed the HD driver update this past weekend. I lost the cd player, the zip drive, and the internal modem immediately following the installation.
