I did as you suggested in your reply. I checked AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. There wasn’t anything in Autoexec. There were 2 unchecked files in Config.sys neither of which were the files you mentioned. I did STARTUP too. I have worked that over and had my local resource person help. I think we have that pretty well cleaned up. My CD rom is listed in Device Manager, but there aren’t any red or yellow things on or around it. I did print out the attachment mentioned in the other response I got. I did the easy stuff in his instructions. I didn’t clean up the fonts because it looked like it was going to take a lot of time. I haven’t done the DOS configuration changes yet either. What little I did restored system resources from 52 back to 66% or more, depending on whether I shut down Zone Alarm.

You do great work! I did all the easy fixes in ytour Spped up Boot up paper and system resources increased more than 10%. Up to 66% now. I’m going to work on the fonts someday when I have lots of time.
      Many thanks.

Some how I have given you the wrong impression. There’s nothing wrong with the CD-Rom. It works fine.
What doesn’t work fine is WinFaxPro 10. The automatic receive feature has never worked like it was supposed to. After a year of trying to “fix” it with help from Symantec and Microsoft, I gave up and bought an external modem just for the fax program.
My local technican expert (who has a “thing” about Zone Alarm) said my resources were running too low and that may have been causing the problem with the fax device. So, I ran a little test and found out that Zone Alarm was using 3% of the resources. The resources are running low, just over 50% when nothing much is going on. The problem may be with system resources but it isn’t bothering the CD-Rom. I appreciate your willingness to help. Maybe this new information will help you help me. Thanks.

Here’s what I copied from BeLarc Advisor:
      Operating System: Windows 98SE
Processor: 400 megahertz Intel Celeron, 32 kilobyte primary memory cache, 128 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Drives: 8.43 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity, 5.41 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
      Sony CD-ROM CDU701
      Generic floppy disk drive (3.5″)
Generic IDE hard disk drive (8.43 GB)
      IOMEGA ZIP 100 (Hard Drive)

Controllers: Standard Floppy Disk Controller, Creative Labs IDE controller; Intel 82371AB/ED PCI Bus Master IDE Controller’; Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo); Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)

BUS ADAPTERS Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller.

128 Megabytes Installed Memory; 128 Megabyte Module Size – 1 installed; One memory socket is empty.

When I do Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Resource Meter with NAV, Winfax Pro 10 automatic receive, and Volume control in the box at the lower right corner of the screen I get System Resources: 52% User Resources: 52% GDI Resources: 81%. If I close Zone Alarm the numbers go up 3%. Right now, without Zone Alarm and while hooked up to the internet the first 2 numbers are down to 43% and the GID is 73% free. I know there’s a pie chart someplace that shows how much memory is used. I don’t know where to find it but I remember that there is still about 55 or 60 % free space on hard drive 1 and hard drive 2 is nearly empty.

OK. I downloaded Zone Alarm, again, and installed it again.
And, I’m going to pose the question of Zone Alarm interfering with the WinFaxPro 10 to the Zone Alarm folks.
And, I’m going to hope Norton AntiVirus keeps the bugs out of my machine so my local technician doesn’t have to spend “2 hours or more” sorting through the hard drive to get a virus that escaped. His reason for suggesting I uninstall Zone Alarm.
      thanks, again.

    • in reply to: back up #555708

Thanks for your comments. My local technician thought Zone Alarm might have been interfering with the automatic receive “feature?” of WinFaxPro10 so I uninstalled Zone Alarm. He claims I am not in much danger from whatever Zone Alarm was protecting me from. Currently I’m getting blank boxes in the middle of the tray at the bottom of the screen. They look like ghosts of previous programs or files I had open and they go away when I click on them.
He further claims that Go Back causes more problems than it solves (particularly when trying to remove a virus) because ” it inserts itself between Windows and your hard drive.”

    • in reply to: Error Message (Windows 98SE, Office 2000 Professional) #550944

I double checked. SR1 and 1a are installed.
The error message started coming up after I made changes in USERS. The error message comes up for some of the contacts but not all of the contact. It looks like the error message happens when I have written something in the bitg white box below the contacts name, address, and phone number.
I don’t know what changes I made in USERS. Previously I wasn’t aware there were any users on my machine. I’m the only one who uses it.

Thanks for your help. Worked just fine.

Thanks to Microsoft Support personnel for fixing the problem. A 5 hour over the phone search identified Dial Up Networking as the culprit holding my modem hostage because MS Task Scheduler was running. Got rid of Task Scheduler. Problem solved. Thanks to Cara at Outlook Support and Justin at Windows 98.

I got my printer back by going to device manager and changing the printer setting to DeskJet880C instead of WinFax where some gremlin had put it.
How do I get rid of the 2 boxes that come up when I reboot? The front box says to Insert my Windows 98SE disc. In the background is the “copying files” box.
I click OK on the install box and 2 more boxes come up telling me what files “it” can’t find. I clidk cancel and they all go away until the next time I reboot.

    • in reply to: blocked file (Windows 98SE SR1 Office 2000 ) #545535

Now I’ve really messed up. The folder I was trying to download was hplj3.exe and was being sent by the Symantec person. I started searching Microsoft Pfoduct Support and got ” WD2000: Error Message: Word Cannot Print. There is No Printer Installed. ” There was a printer installed. Following the directions I uninstalled the HP DeskJet 880C and tried to reinstall. I went through the install wizard to the point where it was supposed to start copying files. It said to insert the Windows 98SE cd so it could copy some files. I did. It couldn’t find the files. I couldn’t either.
Anyway, now I cant get my printer reinstalled. When I reboot, I keep getting the same error message about inserting the Windows 98SE disc and the “copying files” screen is sitting there in the background. If I inser the cd, I continue to get the error messages saying it can’t find the files and to reinsert the cd.
How do I fix all this?

Fixed it with a phone call to MS Support. Changed WinInit.ini to Wininit.nin. Now it works.

Thanks for your interest. I excised the US Robotics modem that has been mostly trouble for 3 years and installed a new modem today. It all works now.

Thank you for your help. I successfully got the copy I wanted into a Word table (new for me) which I put inside a Header-Footer box. I haven’t figured out how to get the margins set properly (1/2 inch from right and left sides of the page). I haven’t figured out how to get rid of the Word table lines. And, I’m guessing that when I get those two things taken care of I just save the resulting template as Letterhead.dot?
