ASKWOODY ALERT!

It’s Patch Tuesday: Ensure automatic updating is off

Woody Leonhard

By Woody Leonhard

On the second Tuesday of each month, all Windows users need to take a few minutes to make sure our machines don’t have a “Kick Me” sign pasted on them.

Today, Microsoft releases its December trove of Windows and Office fixes. Yes, you have to install them — but no, you don’t need to add them the moment they come steaming out of the chute.

This month, I expect that the Patching Gods will be kind to us. Most of Microsoft is on vacation, and the ones who are still working would rather not be. Still … you never know. Spend a couple of minutes now verifying that auto updating is delayed or deferred, paused or pummeled, and you’ll possibly save yourself a lot of headache later (or sooner).
