• MS-DEFCON 4: Install all available patches except Windows 7 Service Pack 1

The coast is clear, best I can tell.

The February set of Black Tuesday patches had a couple of stinkers – the MS11-003 Internet Explorer patch caused a few problems.

If you have an older video card, be aware of the fact that MS11-011 / KB 2393802 may cause problems:

Certain systems that have Intel HD graphics cards or AMD ATI HD graphics cards may crash after this security update is installed… We have identified an incompatibility between this update and certain older versions of the Intel and AMD graphics drivers. Both Intel and AMD have posted updated drivers that resolve this issue.

If you feel tempted to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 / KB 976932, in spite of my recommendations to wait in my Windows Secrets Newsletter Top Story, do yourself a favor and read Susan Bradley’s Best Practices column in the current issue of Windows Secrets Newsletter. Bottom line: you’ll want SP1 some day, but there’s no reason to rush out and get it.

So with those caveats, I’m recommending that you apply all outstanding Microsoft patches. I’m moving us down to MS-DEFCON 4: There are isolated problems with current patches, but they are well-known and documented here. Check this site to see if you’re affected and if things look OK, go ahead and patch.

We’ll have a small set of patches on Tuesday, so make sure Automatic Updates are turned off.
