• Windows 10 keeps installing Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable KB 3119142

    Reader PZ wrote to me with a tale of woe:

    What’s up with “Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (KB3119142)”? According to my update history it has “Successfully Installed” 20 times since January 12th, six times today and six times yesterday!

    Looking around the web, it appears to be an uncommon but not rare occurrence. Thanks to Windows 10’s forced updates, it can come back over and over again.

    A thread in the Microsoft Answers forum appears to supply a workaround. Poster JimN_386 says:

    Windows update has installed this update 20 times. 10 are dated 1/12/2016 and 10 are dated 1/13/2016: “Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (KB3119142)” and they all say Successfully installed. This is on my system that has not updated from Build 10240 to Build 10586.

    Poster Dimkon says:

    Same problem for me. Keeps installing 4 times when a check for updates is done. Installation is too fast and there is no time for any action. Windows 10 home 64 bit 1511, 10586.63

    After a Microsoft engineer responded with the usual palaver, “In Windows 10, your device is always kept up to date with the latest features and fixes. Updates and drivers are installed automatically, with no need to select which updates are needed or not needed,” JimN_386 came back with an answer:

    This is how I solved my issue. Don’t have a clue as to why it worked:

    Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program > I uninstalled all Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributables (There were 4 listed).

    Ran Check for updates again. One Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable was installed. It no longer keeps installing 4 times when a check for updates is done.

    There’s also a solution that involves doing a repair install. See this Tenforums thread for details.

    Windows 10 forced updates strikes again.
