I’m stumped. I have tried downloading Libre Office … but every attempt stops at 4.5 meg. Libre Office help and forum have been unable to help. This happens with both WinXP and Win7 .. Using FF35. … Open Office downloaded fine. As have other large files. I turned off Comodo firewall, but that made no difference. Does anyone have any ideas what would cause one large file to stop downloading at the same point every time. … And, oh yes, I also tried different versions of the software from different mirrors. So it is not one particular file that might have a problem.

AskWoody MVPFebruary 26, 2015 at 1:08 pm #1492543As a matter of interest, I’ve just re-downloaded LibreOffice 4.4.1 using the Main Installer (i.e. the MSI file directly rather than via a Torrent) from http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ without any problems.
Have you cleared out your temp files? (in case you are running out of temporary environment space and the file download hasn’t enough space to convert itself from a temporary download file to the actual MSI file). If not, try something like CCleaner which will clear out the temporary files cache for both System and your profile (and browser cache at the same time).
(The OpenOffice installer is only 127 Mb compared to LibreOffice’s 219 Mb filesize.)
Hope this helps…

CCleaner is used here regularly. True, maybe, about size of OO and LO files … but the point is LO won’t go past 4.5 Mb and the download stops. OO will download with no problem. So free space hardly seems to be the problem. … I have plenty of free space. I also used the same link you did.

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 26, 2015 at 1:45 pm #1492551I am downloading it now from http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ and the big green Download button, doesn’t seem to be any problem. I’ve used OpenOffice in the past but prefer LibreOffice due to support for Microsoft Works files, have version 4.3 installed now.

I have 4.3 .. got it some time ago with no problem. Now I have tried getting 4.4.1. Can’t figure why it stops so precisely at the same point in the download.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 26, 2015 at 4:09 pm #1492575theres a second option which i presonally prefer , you could go download portableapps installer and download libreoffice through it, there its on a seperate mirror from the actual libre office official mirror, and its got the advantage of being portable aka not having resources being flung around throughout your system

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 27, 2015 at 1:50 am #1492619I just downloaded LibreOffice v4.4.1 from http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ but the file extension was “.man”, not “.msi” as I expected. But after changing the extension to “.msi” and double-clicking the file the LibreOffice installer launched.

AskWoody MVPFebruary 27, 2015 at 2:38 am #1492626Al, I suspect some security software, either currently installed or a remnant from a previous install, is responsible for this. Try looking at the loaded .dll’s in your browser when downloading with Process Explorer, you might pick out the software responsible.

I checked the router log, and it appears from that, for some reason LibreOffice tries to send ICQ messages shortly after download begins. When that fails (I have no IM software installed) it seems the download fails. Might be coincidence but the log shows the combination each time. Don’t see why ICQ messages are necessary for a download. Never run into that before.

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 27, 2015 at 5:33 pm #1492781When double-clicking the downloaded file LibreOffice_4.4.1_Win_x86.msi it starts the install process and part of it is if you have a previous version installed you’ll see it removing files before installing the new ones. Same for installing on Mac OS X, get a prompt about replacing the older version first.
I have no IM, ICQ or IRC running at the time.

I’m not getting as far as the install. The download quits at 4.5MB, leaving only a partial file in the download folder. About 2% of the total file. Something is stopping LO that doesn’t stop anything else that I download. And my only clue are those router log entries. Doesn’t make any sense to me, but. (shrug).

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 27, 2015 at 7:22 pm #1492819What makes you think it’s Libre Office sending those ICQ messages, have you double-checked with Process Explorer or Resource Monitor to verify/trace them back to source?
Yes. I attempted downloads from 5 different mirrors. Checked the log and there were ICQ messages. The IP3#2 all track back to the mirrors.

Thanks for the link. Same thing happened … exactly 4.567MB and the download stopped. All the mirrors are undoubtedly perfect. Just won’t, for some crazy reason, work for me. I really would like to have OL 4.4.1, but I guess under the circumstances I am forced to stay with Open Office. .. Ho hum. … Unless I stumble on some little quirk somewhere. … Seems to me any security item would stop the download at the beginning if it was going to do it, not wait until 4.567MB. … I have disabled firewall, and antivirus while downloading. Doesn’t help. And this happens on 2 computers, different OS. … Thanks for the attempts to help. Appreciate it.

AskWoody MVPFebruary 27, 2015 at 7:36 pm #1492829Some security software does not block unless it picks up a specific (suspicious heuristic/guess or proven ad/malware) string from the data stream.
EDIT: Ok, reboot your router, check the settings are all correct, if your ISP is in charge of your DNS, etc., check on your account settings that you haven’t allowed them to add any ‘family safety’ etc. nannyware on their side.

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 27, 2015 at 8:04 pm #1492831Further to my #11 post:
I just went to http://www.libreoffice.org/download again and then right-clicked the “Download Version 4.4.1” button then left-clicked “Copy Shortcut” (IE11) then pasted the link into notepad. The link points to http://donate.libreoffice.org/home/dl/win-x86/4.4.1/en-US/LibreOffice_4.4.1_Win_x86.msi
But IE11’s download bar shows the download file as “LibreOffice_4.4.1_Win_x86.man” not “LibreOffice_4.4.1_Win_x86.msi“. Clearly there is at least that problem alone with the coding of the download page on the LibreOffice server.

So far on mine I haven’t seen the “man” extension. … They all show up as .msi.part (meaning an incomplete download).

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 27, 2015 at 8:19 pm #1492832From what I saw on Google Search maybe it’s ICQ blocking a port? Will it work if Task Manager is used to End Process of ICQ?
Except there is no ICQ or any other IM software on these computers. I do have skype on the one (not active at this time) but not on the second computer, and problem happens on both. So it is not skype. And, as I say, there are no IM programs on this machine.

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 27, 2015 at 10:17 pm #1492841Is it possible that somewhere in your Internet connection/ISP or at the other end you are connected through a Unix Server? The file extension is probably for UNIX Manual, there’s a lot of UNIX Servers on the ‘net. It may be near-impossible to find it.
A thought: I’d try downloading a Linux LiveCD or Live DVD .iso file such as Linux Mint 17, create the disc from it then boot to it. I’ve always gotten an Internet connection and can download files that way, just have to point to a Folder on the HDD for saving.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 28, 2015 at 8:22 am #1492904Problem solved … I guess … but I don’t know the reason behind it. … Because ICQ and IM_QQ where both showing up in the router log relating to the download attempts, I temporarily unblocked both in the router. The download worked fine. I then restored the two blocks in the router. I don’t have any IM software on my computers (except for Skype, which doesn’t apply here) so I don’t know where any messages might have gone. For some reason ICQ and IM_QQ access appeared to be necessary for the download to work. Can’t find any explanation for that. But anyway, I got the download OK. … Thanks everyone for attempting to help. Appreciate the efforts.

AskWoody_MVPFebruary 28, 2015 at 7:02 pm #1493074Further to my #11 and #26 posts re the LO download file having unexpected extension “man” instead of expected “msi”.
A few minutes ago I checked again at http://www.libreoffice.org/download
After I clicked the “Download Version 4.4.1” button, the IE11 download bar showed “LibreOffice_4.4.1_Win_x86.msi” rather than “LibreOffice_4.4.1_Win_x86.man” as before.
So that glitch with the LO download seems to have been fixed on the server.
