Does any kind person know why a certain document insists on setting ON the setting,”file is ready for archiving” within the advanced properties? This seems to then cause a permission failure when saving the document.
I have copied all data except the last paragraph mark, to a new document but the problem persists.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2005 at 2:15 pm #934847I’m guessing here, but it could be that the folder in which you’re saving the document has the “Folder is ready for archiving” property set to true, and so any file you save in that folder inherits the property. Try checking the folder properties (in the same way that you can check the document properties) to see if this is the case.
Cheers,

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2005 at 2:34 pm #934852Could it be that your Normal.dot document template has the property set to true? (Another guess) If you’re not getting the problem with other documents, it’s unlikely to be this though. You could check that this particular document isn’t using another template instead (Tools > Templates and Add-Ins…)
Here endeth my limited knowledge

AskWoody_MVPMarch 15, 2005 at 11:06 pm #935046I would expect that every file that has been changed since being backed up has the Archive Bit set to true. This is standard Windows behaviour and I would be surprised if this was causing your permissions failure.
The Archive Bit allows Windows to track which files have been modified. When you run a backup activity across a file set, the backup can be told to backup just the files that were changed since the last backup. The Archive Bit is used to identify these files and the backup tool copies those files and then resets the Archive Bit to Off. As soon as you edit one of the files again, the Archive Bit is turned on automatically in readiness for the next (incremental) backup cycle.
There is another file attribute that will interfere with your ability to save the file. If the file attribute ‘Read Only’ is set then you encounter roadblocks when trying to save the file. Are you sure this setting is off?

AskWoody LoungerMarch 16, 2005 at 9:24 am #935081Thank you folks but I have checked all the folders and spoken to the network administrator. Nice explaination of the archive bit and the “read only” is definately OFF.
I can save several times through out my editing, then the save will take about 1 to 2 minutes and then displays “Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error”. I then have to use SaveAs and use a new name. This creates the new document & the original vanishes, (which is unlike a normal SaveAs, where you might want to keep the original).
I continue to investigate – I will not be beaten on this! -

AskWoody_MVPMarch 16, 2005 at 10:25 am #935091This sounds like a hugely annoying problem. The fact that the original document is disappearing is odd. There is yet another file attribute ‘Hidden’ that might explain a file ‘disappearing’ if you are not displaying hidden files – Not that this would happen without help from a code somewhere.
Have you already eliminated errant macros from the possible causes of this problem?
Is Fast Saves turned on in your Word options? (It shouldn’t be)
